Seborrheic Hair Loss in Answers
Does seborrheic dermatitis cause hair loss? Also, are there any proven natural remedies to control or rid of this condition? Any harm in using those tar shampoos over a long period of time? I am hesistant to do anything which will cause hair loss and am scared if I don't that the seborrheic dermatitis will itself cause hair loss. I also have it on face now :( Any sufferers know how to control this?

DeeLC replied: "well i dont know that is on your face but the other stuff can be treated w/ "Head and Shoulders" shampoo. You got dandruff and in severe cases it causes hair loss."

Hair loss due to seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis? I unfortunately have psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis(which i believe i have both on my scalp) 50% of my hair has fallen out in the past 2 years. it's embarrassing! What can i do to stop my hair from falling out and when will it grow back?

W replied: "the skin conditions you have will not cause your hair to fall out. It is most likely genetic. You can be tested for Lupus, which can cause you to lose hair. Also, stress, internal illness, recent surgery can cause you to lose hair quickly, but if these are the causes, it will eventually grow back. Try Rogaine to keep the hair that you have left."

Sancira replied: ""Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp (dandruff) in adults and adolescents. Dandruff is usually treated with a shampoo that contains salicylic acid (some brand names: X-Seb, Scalpicin), the prescription medicine selenium sulfide (brand names: Selsun Blue, Exsel) or zinc pyrithione (some brand names: DHS Zinc, Head & Shoulders). These shampoos can be used 2 times a week. Shampoos with coal tar (some brand names: DHS Tar, Neutrogena T/Gel, Polytar) may be used 3 times a week. If you have dandruff, you might start by using one of these shampoos daily until your dandruff is controlled, and then use it 2 or 3 times a week. When you use a dandruff shampoo, rub the shampoo into your hair thoroughly and let it stay on your hair and scalp for at least 5 minutes before rinsing. This will give it time to work. If the shampoo alone doesn't help, your doctor might want you to use a prescription steroid lotion once or twice daily, in addition to the shampoo. Seborrheic dermatitis of the skin creases in adolescents and adults. Steroid lotions may be used in adolescents and adults. " The effectiveness of medications used to treat alopecia depends on the cause of hair loss, extent of the loss and individual response. Generally, treatment is less effective for more extensive cases of hair loss."

DORY replied: "No "white processed foods"! Bread, white rice, pasta, and no dairy! None! The freshest fruits and veggies, local costs less! Cold water fish, 3 times a week! Lean beef, chicken and "Whole grains"! (first word on label) A good multi-vitamin and a fish oil or a flax-seed oil capsule 2-3 times a day, with meals! A B-complex vitamin is also good! Yes! With the multi! Good luck!"

Wally G replied: "The main cause of SD is overreaction of the immune system. Identifying certain foods, chemicals, etc can be very helpful in battling this disease. I try to avoid soy and milk products which trigger my flare-ups. After using number of prescription drugs I've turned to the natural treatments. Now I use herbal remedies from serenaskin.com, which aim at the root of the disease - the immune system, and are steroid-free. After about 2 weeks of using ointment and spray my scalp has been cleared up and now I just continue with anti-eczema extract, which controls the immune system. My scalp has been clear for months now. It is the only treatment I have found that provides me complete relief when I use it as directed."

toadhopper422 replied: "Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face and trunk causing scaly, flaky, itchy, red skin. It particularly affects the sebum-gland rich areas of skin. It is thought to be caused by a fungal infection caused by the yeast Malassezia furfur (formerly known as Pityrosporum ovale) in individuals with decreased immunity and increased sebum production. In a normally-functioning individual, the fungus thrives without incident, but in those afflicted with seborrhoeic dermatitis, the body's epidermis responds unfavorably to the infection, becoming inflamed and shedding large scales of skin in a failed attempt to rid itself of the fungus. Treatments The recommended treatment is ketoconazole creams and/or shampoos. Topical steroids should be reserved for acute flare-ups only as they may precipitate recurrences and dependence. Shampoos containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide or coal tar may also help, as may lotions containing alpha-hydroxy acids. Some afflicted with the condition have also reported that an increased intake of Omega-3 fatty acids, usually fish oil, is effective in reducing the frequency and intensity of the symptoms' recurrence when combined with the traditional shampoos and creams, likely due to the anti-inflammatory effects of Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), antagonized by various Omega-3 fats. Soap may precipitate a flare-up, and a soap-alternative should be used instead."

27 year old woman who is losing her hair. How to stop it? I have seborrheic dermatitis and I am losing my hair. I am not losing it in clumps but thinning out, especially where the dermatitis outbreaks occur most. What to do? I have gotten blood tests to determine my hormone levels and everything seems fine but obviously it is not. I also have acne and no sex drive so I would have thought this hair loss with all of the above was hormonal but tests say no. What can I do to stop this before I lose all of my hair?

i need help treating seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp!!!? HI, i know you can wash your hair with steroid shampoos to treat seborrheic dermatitis but im black and i dont wash my hair every day. I wash it every two weeks but i dont want to wash my hair with that shampoo bc it thins your hair out and may cause hair loss. I saw online that dr's can prescribe a special steroid oil and i was wondering if anyone knew any over-the-counter products that worked as well. I dont want to go to a dermatologist again so just OTC products please (if any) :)!!! Thanks in advance!

Big Barn replied: "First rub your head with baby oil before you get in the shower. Rub it in real good and then just wait at least 30 minutes before you shampoo . There is a shampoo that is made with melaluka oil that you can buy at super cuts use that, and increase the frequency of your hair washing to every time you shower every other day at least. This will also make you smell better. Steroids I don't know where you can get it, but I've heard it works for about anything."

Sweetandhot replied: "My 14 yr old daughter has suffered with seborrheic dermatitis for 4 years. She got it on her face and neck and scalp. I used Mupirocin ointment 2% and she was completely cleared up in 2 days! We tried every cream and shampoo known to man, OTC and prescription, with little or no result. Please go to your doctor and insist they give you the prescription and it only takes a tiny bit on each affected area. Please try it and post your results! I was actually given the prescription for a sore that would not heal and tried it on my daughter's neck first and then on her face. It was amazing! It was all gone in two days! It may not work this well for everyone but I have to let others know about her result. If you can't get the Mupirocin ointment the only other thing that helped was cortisone cream OTC or prescription. The doctors will tell you not to use too often. My daughter is brown skinned and she used it for years with absolutely no problems."

Any natural remedies for alopecia? I am slowly losing my hair because of seborrheic dermatitis and am wanting to know if there are any natural remedies which can stop the hair loss and stimulate the cells in the affected area to grow hair back.

JustMe replied: "The all natural Prosante hair products are very effective. Shampoo, conditioner and nourishing scalp treatment are available. Hope this is helpful"

David R replied: "I think alopecia is a seperate problem from dermatitis. (Nothing can be done about alopecia in most cases). I think for dermatitis is best treated with prescription meds. See a dermatologist."

Sage Mountain replied: "The Chinese medical theory dictates that hair health is dependent on Kidney energy. This natural hair loss remedy contains herbs that strengthen the Kidney. In addition to hair health and reversal of thinning hair, the Kidney energy is responsible for sexual health, core metabolism and energy, back strength, and stable emotions free of fear. To a modern Westerner, the Chinese concept of Organs might seem unusual as the Chinese Medical concept of Organs lack emphasis on a physical structure. Although many terms used when speaking of Organs are similar to Western concepts, they do not refer to the specific tissue, but rather to semi-abstract concepts of interrelated functions. Here are a couple of Kidney Tonics that have long been used to restore hair: Ganoderma lucidum-ling zhi-Reishi Mushroom The Reishi mushroom has an unparalleled reputation in the Orient as the ultimate herbal substance. For over two thousand years it has been sought-after by mountain sages and by the emperors of China. In the first Chinese herbal text (Shennong’s Pharmacopeia) it says that "continuous consumption of Reishi makes your body light and young, lengthens your life and turns you into one like the immortal who never dies." Reishi was traditionally called "the mushroom of immortality." Polygonum multiflorum-he shou wu - Fo Ti In China, it is said that long-term use of this famous "longevity herb" helps return an aging person to youthfulness. It strengthens the back. The literal translation of the name is "black-haired Mr. He" refers to its ability to restore hair color and nourish the skin, hair, teeth and nails. It is a classic essence tonic and major blood tonic that cleanses the blood."

Seborrheic dermatitis? So my hair has been falling out for the last 4 or 5 months. Last time I went to the doc, he said he found Seborrheic dermatitis (overproduction of oil) and prescribed some medicated shampoo. I am assuming that the dermatitis is the reason for the hair loss. Will the hair that fell out grow back and how long will it take?

deepak replied: "Yea it could be the reason if the dermatitis did involve the scalp. don't worry dear.. its just a temporary hair loss. it can grow back sooner or later. Grow time depends on person to person. Like say, your current dermatitis condition, nutrition factors and genetics factor.."

seborrheic dermatitis help? I have been told inthe past that i have seborrheic dermatitis. The problem is i wash my hair with all the shampoos they tell me too and when im told too, and yet it never gets any better. My scalp gets oily within an hour of washing it, then it starts to get red in areas and those areas start to feel itchy, and even if i dont itch those areas i stil lose hair in those spots. I don't have dandruff falling from my scalp, but if i run a comb through it there will be some flakes loosened some with hair attached to it some without. what can i do ? im losing so much hair in areas and also my eyebrows too ? I have seen a trichologist and they think my hairloss is due to some called lactic acid are going to give me some things to treat that. I have done some google searches and not much comes up, but this is the explanation Lactic acid leads to degradation of the inner sheath because of the caustic effect. Hair loss, in the form of Telogen Effluvium, is the result. ... what do you all think, will this be the answer to my problems or do you think it is Seb Derm Trichologist says Lactic Acid Dermatologist says Seb Derm

•Wah•™ replied: "Idk but ask your dermatologist for be tested for seb derm and/or your trichologist for lactic acid"
