Anti-Nausea medication question. Why does Ativan seem to be used for this & not other benzodiazepines? Hello,
I have had pretty severe nausea over the past many months...too long due to a chronic pain condition that requires the use of opioid medicines (in addition to other medicines to help treat the underlying auto-immune related disease; mainly Imuran and Plaquenil).
I have tried just about all known pain relievers, but won't go too far into that since it isn't really related to this question. The short version is, I am still in pretty severe pain almost all the time and only am getting minimal relief because I have not been able to tolerate stronger pain meds. Mainly, my problem is with the horrible nausea that the medicines cause me, which does not lessen or go away, as most people seem to luckily find; and I have done my best to suffer through even 2 or more months (with the debilitating nausea, each day) to see if my body would FINALLY adjust to the medicine; but I just couldn't handle it or have even the limited life that I have without them. So, I wasn't able to get to a high enough dosage of the various pain meds to get much help & had to stop.
Oops, I wasn't going to get into that, sorry :)
...But just to give all the details I can, luckily my Dr. is very compassionate and has tried all she can. I literally think I tried almost all of the normal opiate-type pain relievers, like Oxycontin, Fentanyl (caused the worst nausea of them all), a few Morphine variants & the Hydromorphone, some various long-acting versions like Kadian, and many others. But, they all led to the same resulting nausea, just more or less of it, but even the "less" was a lot. Right now, the most I can handle is just Norco (hydrocodone), which is not even close to helping much.
MY QUESTION (Finally):
After all that info, my actual question is about anti-nausea medicines. I currently take Zofran, which is definitely better then nothing and does help. I think it mostly helps keep me from actually physically throwing up, but doesn't really make me feel less nauseous. I have also tried Phenergan, but it didn't seem to help.
I try to research as much as I can online and came across lots of info about "Ativan" being a widely used & effective medicine. From what little I know, I've heard of it & know that it's in the same overall class of those "benzodiazepines", except when looking up info on it, Ativan specifically says it treats nausea while none of the other "benzo" meds mentioned that (like klonopin, valium, xanax).
I was wondering why that would be? I actually currently take Klonopin to slightly help with muscle pain, but doesn't seem to help with the nausea much obviously...
But when researching klonopin, it doesn't mention that it treats nausea. I was under the impression that all of those benzo class meds were pretty much the same thing, except like the klonopin lasts much longer then say xanax. Except now I am really wondering if Ativan is an option that might help and, or if there are any major downsides or risks with it?
And if it is different and "better" for anti-nausea use, can and is it ever used much on a long term basis? Unfortunately, my condition and symptoms are lifelong and I hopefully have a while left :)
Thanks for reading all this & so sorry it got so long. Any help or advice or experiences with it would be hugely appreciated!
daddyrx replied: "Lorazepam is effective at reducing anxiety--thus its efficacy in reducing chemotherapy-inducing anticipatory nausea or potentially for anxiety-induced nausea. There just isn't the data to support the use of lorazepam as a major anti-emetic for non-anxiety nausea, and there is data on the potential harm of delirium or excessive sedation."
Where can I find a list that shows? prescription drugs and their risks of pregnancy? I looked on the FDA's sight and can't find it. I am on Zofran and a bloodpressure medicine from my obgyn. I still worry.
I mean there risks during pregnancy not of pregnancy.. OOppps

You could try this, or buy a nurse's drug guide.
Zofran is in pregnancy category B, meaning it is not known to cause birth defects and is fairly safe to use.
or this:"
Kimberly B replied: "This is a good webstie."
Nicola L replied: "I know it's hard but you should try not to worry. There is no definitive list, and even if there were most things would be on it. The reason being trials have not been conducted on the vast majority of drugs. No woman in the world would consent to trials on her unborn child, is why! It doesn't mean they should never be used, just with caution and on medical advice. If they are recommended by your doctor, that's all you can do. If the reisks to your child are less with medication than without, take it and try not to worry too much.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck!"
severe pregnancy nausea? have it 24-7, have to contstantly eat because its worse when im hungry, have tried EVERYTHING, someone mentioned zofran but i looked it up on the net and there are serious side affects - has anyone else had zofran? was everything ok? did it work?
D B replied: "try nibling on a small peice of stem ginger or amke your self some ginger tea"

louloubelle replied: "I had really bad sickness with my daughter, I think it can be worse with girls, but it is a good sign as it means you are producing lots of pg hormones - not very comforting I know.
try ginger products, ginger biscuits, ginger ale, as ginger is a natural anti emetic.
The other thing I found was to avoid things that were too acidic like fruit juice, as it made it worse. The thing that seemed to settle my stomach was chocolate milkshake, like yazoo. Good for indigestion too. Speak to your doctor about medications that may be suitable if it is really bad, ane remember to drink plenty of fluids so you don't get dehydrated."
tinkerbelltilly replied: "hi, i know how you feel i suffered with nausea too, i used little bands you can buy from the chemist, forget what they are called but you put them around your wrists and they have a little plastic bit on them that you pop on your pulse point, they worked for me, and they are only a couple of pounds so worth a go..i think they are the same kinda things that children wear for travel sickness.. hope this helps a little, only other advice is eat little and often and to try sipping ginger tea or ginger biscuits
xx"

november_special replied: "You haven't said how may weeks you are.... I can only offer sympathy. I'm now 12 weeks and it's starting to go but weeks 6 - 8/9 were the worst of my life! I phoned up my doctors in a state as I wasn't living, only surviving (I think).
They wouldn't do anything unless I was being sick roughly 10 times a day, which ok I wasn't.
I won't suggest anything remotely ginger as this doesn't work for me, it didn't with my first pregnancy either.
Sucking on orange flavoured ice-lollies got me through a little.
You just have to ride the storm - it will go and then you will be able to enjoy your pregnancy."
11 weeks pregnant [are these pills okay to take for nausea during pregnancy]? i have very bad all day morninq sickness.
went to the hospital and my doctor recommanded i took
zofran . and vistaril... is vistaril a safe drug cause i looked
it up and got one website that said it wasnt.. anyone got
the same pills... anything happened ?
Baby Joel is due 12/22/08 replied: "Trust your doctor.
I don't know about vistraril, but I took Zofran in the beginning of my second trimester.
Although it is safe, it is a sedative, and makes the baby groggy, so my doctor advised me to take it only when I really needed it."

Leisa replied: "My doctor told me that the ONLY medication I could take during pregnancy was paracetamol. You even have to stop taking vitamin supplements (unless they are supplements specific to pregnancy).
It is always better to be safe than sorry, don't you think??
Congrats on your pregnancy too by the way!"
Cindy replied: "Yea I have the worst all day morning sickness. I lost weight instead of gained. Oh and Im 11 weeks today too. Im not sure about your pills but my dr prescribed some medication for nausea. What helps me through the day is eating Keebler saltine crackers and ginger ale (freezing cold) I take a bag of strawberries or sliced mango to work. The thought of eating seems gross but we have to. But I found I do better munching all day instead of sitting down to a meal. Eventually Ill eat a sandwich. I hate milk but if I can (sometimes I cant) Ill eat special K cerial so I can drink the milk for calcium. But try what Im doing. Oh and cranberry juice (freezing cold) seems to help too. maybe thats just me. This week has been better than before. Try it. Email me if you figure out tips or if you want other tips for our all day morning sickness. Good luck."

Datura stramonium (jimson weed)? Hi, I have a few questions about datura stramonium, that I need answered in as much detail as possible.
Is datura stramonium the most common species of datura that people use to get high on?
alos what other kinds of datura are used as a legal high?
what are the differnt effects each species gives?
how many seeds should I boil for a tea, and how long? (I only want a mild high, but enough to make me hallucinate and not be sent to the hospital)
Ive seen pictures of datura stramonium, but some of the flowers look differnt, exactly what does it look like?
what's the safest way to use it? (what parts, tea, smoke, eat?)
what kind of side effects am I looking at for the recommended dose, and how long will it take to ware off?
I heard it's a very bitter tasting plant, if I can't keep it down, should I take nausia medication, such as zofran?
and is there anything I can do to stay hydrated while on it?
I'm sure I'll think of more later. I'm just cautious.
I understand all the risks.
I didn't come here to get crusified and told not to do it. I came here with questions that needed answering.
I found a house that's growing it, I'll be by there sometime this week to pick a seed pod. I'm gonna boil a tea with about 10 seeds for 15 minutes, hoping for a mild high. My questions going to expire soon, so please if you have an answer to any of these besides "don't do it", shoot me a message. Thanks.
BotanyDave replied: "No you're not.
If you knew anything whatsoever about this species you would leave it alone.
Under no circumstances should you use this plant for "getting high." It is extremely dangerous- if it doesn't kill you, it will put you in the hospital.
But as you seem to be a fool, I do hereby pre-nominate you for a Darwin Award."
Ghost Who Walks replied: "I feel sorry for you and you are addicted to such a poisonous plant. There are red, white and pink colored datura and all are same species. It has a poision named strictnine which is highly poisonous and is nerve toxin. India medicine system uses it in ultra low concentrations for treatment of nervous disorders.
Do you like to go nervous?"
whatsgrimace replied: "Do yourself a favor and use a different hallucinogen instead, because datura CAN kill you. Weed, shrooms, and acid cannot. If you're determined to do something psychoactive, there are better, non-deadly options out there.
EDIT: Also, there are very few if any good "legal highs". Try salvia, I guess."
kushtoe replied: "Please do not try Datura, any specia of Datura.
I've answered a similar question b4 so I'll be brief... my experience left me on the verge of madness, my friends still think I'm mad.
Initially it's ok but then things start to get wierd. The hallucinations are so real you can't tell what is real and what is not, seriously. Everyone and EVERYTHING wants to talk to you, I mean everyhtiong.....walls, statues all sorts of things. (statues are the scariest I found). It lasts for a long time, for me a week but still I was still uncertain after two weeks.
You start to question your own reality, you simply don't know if the person or thing you are talking to is there or not. This can be frightening and simply very very strange. And not just for you but the people around you.
Safest way to take is not to take it.
Don't take any medication but don't take Datura either.
Don't take Datura....end of. I'm being deadly serious."
Has anyone had swelling of the legs after receiving I.V. fluids? Last night I ended up in the E.R. after having a stomach virus for several days and a terrible migraine all day yesterday. They started an I.V. right away for fluids then they gave me a shot of Zofran for nausea and Dhe for the migraine. I still ended up sick to my stomach so they gave me more Zofran and another liter of fluid, I think they said it was a total of 1,000ml of fluid. Today my calves feel all swollen up and stiff. When I try to walk I feel very awkward. I looked up both medications and didn't see any kind of swelling as a side effect so I'm wondering if it could be the I.V. fluid causing this. Where exactly does that fluid go once its in your body? Has anyone else had this happen and what can I do to make it go away? Thanks!
Diana D replied: "Hi Sweetie,
And yes, r right it's only water retentention, which'll go through r body & ul'll pee out. Hope this helps in understanding r problem? They give u the I.V. so u don't become dehydrated & the fluid constantly runs threw r body, thus having some left over u can see, yet will fade away with time. I've had many operations & it's just a pain seeing it, but when u touch it, u can feel the water retention.
LOL, Diana D"
k-baby replied: "You need to go back to the er. That is not normal."
I"m doing a poll: At what week did your morning sickness stop? I'm at week 9 and I've been sick for a month. I'm on Zofran and it doesn't always prevent me from throwing up or just being generally miserable with nausea, so I'm just trying to find something to look forward to in the (hopefully near) future....tell me your week.
ps. I know some people can last all 9 mo. and I've tried eating crackers and drinking water and ginger ale. I actually only get sick when I eat, or am thinking about eating. I can't eat crackers of any kind. And basically all starches are out---and I normally eat ALL starches all day long. Cold and mushy things are my friends. Spicy is actually better. ----Funny how everybody is different. Just give me your week, please.

thats it...
and that was in the first 11 weeks of being pregnant. now all i am is tired...

ruby's mom replied: "hi. i was as bad as you are, and i, too, was on zofran. i feel you pain, momma. mine stopped being horrible and every day at week 14 exactly. it was off and on until week 16, then maybe once a week or once every two weeks till the end. one thing that really helped me (i swear) was acupuncture. also, the acupuncturist recommended certain foods to eat and to avoid based on my "type" of morning sickness -- not everyone is the same. it didn't get rid of it; i still needed the zofran, but it made a big difference. hang in there, good luck, and congrats."

Hopefully and most likely yours will stop in the next month or so."
browneyebuttafly replied: "I was only sick for about a week and that was around 5-7 weeks. I was like that for both my kids. I never had weird cravings or food that made me sick. But with my son I had alot of back pains and some mild heartburn. I think I got lucky :)"

If your on a prenatal vit. you are getting more than enough unless yoru doctor says other wise..... If your not taking prenatals try the flinston vit. My doc had me on 4 a day instead of the prenatal pill since they made me sick...."
nunciata22 replied: "I am another one of those who suffered through it the entire pregnancy with my first. I was 38 weeks when I had him, and I was puking up until the minute he was out of my body. With this pregnancy I started on Zofran and I think the morning sickness ended about 12 weeks. I have transient episodes of nausea and I will take Zofran for that, but 12 weeks the constant stuff stopped."
Nicole replied: "3 months"
♥ 3 Girls ♥ replied: "First pregnancy - 16 weeks - hospitalized because of hyperemesis and 15lb weight loss in 2 months.
Second pregnancy - 14 weeks - miserable, but no hyperemesis
Third pregnancy - 22 weeks, then came back at 35 weeks (not as bad, though!) - longer lasting, but less severe.
A few things that helped me a bunch:
1. Switched from prenatals to gummy children's vitamins (with OB's ok) and only took them right before bed. There isn't any iron in the gummies. If iron levels are an issue, Flinstone's vitamins work well.
2. Unisom and B6 combination. Ask your OB. I took 25 mg of each (one pill each) at night and a half tablet of each in the morning. It is recommended that you take a half tablet of each in the early afternoon too, but it made me too groggy. If you do this (with your OB's permission, of course), you will be tired the first few days, but it will get better! Any time I tried stopping the combo, I got sick again.
3. I upped the amount of protein I was eating. I forced myself to eat more protein, and it helped make the nausea less severe.
4. Really sour lemonade! It was one of the only things that settled my stomach. I liked spicy foods too!
I was prescribed Zofran, but actually, the Unisom/B6 combo worked much better for me! We are all different, but it may be worth talking to your OB about!
Good luck! Only a few more weeks of it! Soon the nausea will be replaced with little flutters and kicks! And remember, women with nausea are much less likely to miscarry!"
utahyoda replied: "Mine started fading at 16 weeks and ended at 23. Now I am 12 weeks with baby number 2 and so far still miserable.
Hang in there. A lot of us are going through it and the baby will be worth it!"
