Can Evening Primrose Oil Induce Labor? I am 36 1/2 weeks pregnant. I want to try to induce my labor. I was in the hospital 2 weeks ago due to contractions. When the nurse checked me, she said I was 1 centimeter dialated and 2.00 effaced. She said my cervix is already very soft, so since that is the case, do you think it will really work for me if i take it. Everyone says to insert it vaginally. What do you think? btw, the nurse told me that it would be fine if i have sex to help with the contractions, since i was already in the hospital a few weeks back due to having intercourse. She told me at that time it was too early. but when i get closer to 37 weeks, i can have all the sex I want. im only 3 days from 37 weeks. so im pretty much full term. Thank you very much!

tidgie10211982 replied: "36 1/2 weeks is not enough time for your baby. I'm so disgusted with these women who just want to try to induce labor themselves because they're sick of being pregnant. It's not about you, it's about that baby and what's best for the baby. Medically speaking, there's no way for you to induce labor yourself anyways. All this about sex, primrose oil, castor oil, spicy foods, ect are just old wives tales. (Nothing has been scientifically or medically proven to induce labor yourself)"

Danielle replied: "Just let the baby come out when he or she is ready. You don't have long now. By the time that baby comes, you'll forget all about this question."

Amanda Loves Mike! replied: "no. stop it! your baby isnt ready to come out yet. theres a reason they call 40 weeks ''full term'' and give you a DUE DATE. think of your son or daughter. they could have serious health issues if they arent developed enough yet. you want to deliver like that?"

Just three more weeks to go!! replied: "Honestly, I think you should wait and try not to induce your labor. Right now Im 38 weeks and 6 days and I wish this baby would come out but knowing that my baby is getting only healthier by staying in there gives me a piece of mind. All you have to think about is that its only a couple of more days and that its really going to be worth it. Plus keep in mind that the doctors due date is only an approximate date...you could be off by two weeks. which would mean that you do have the possibility of the baby being born two weeks earlier if you try to induce. Best of luck with whatever you decide."

sarah71397 replied: "im more than week overdue im anxious to meet my baby im anxious because its my first baby but im just gonna wait because i would be too scared to do anything that might have negative effects in the long run so if i was you i'd be patient and deal with it . theres no need to get snotty either you asked peoples opinions and you got them and sex is encouraged everyone knows that!!"

How long does it take for evening primrose oil to induce labor? I am almost 39 weeks pregnant now, and I am 3 cm dilated, but 0 % effaced and I was wondering how long this would take to work? One of the nurses told me to try this, but I dont know anyone who has tried it before.

Jenn T replied: "EPO doesn't induce labor, it helps to ripen your cervix. If your body isn't ready to go into labor, nothing will work to force it."

Holly M replied: "Well it works for some and doesnt for others... it is hit or miss and the times can vary too.. sorry i couldnt give you a timeing, but it really is different for every woman..."

gracekelly3rd replied: "i dunno but i think too much sex can bring on preme labour"

Jill replied: "it did absolutely nothing for me... and I took it like it was going out of style! give it a try though, it can't hurt! Good luck!"

Checks B replied: "I just watched CNN’s international Channel(3pm EST), breaking the news that oil price spikes again. But the anchor and the reporter assert it is China’s diesel demand contributed to the hike. Waited a sec ! It is already THIRD time I am hearing CNN’s assertion of China’s diesel demand. The first time was about two weeks ago. What’s going on? Then, Israel’s-Iran-attack-drill news flashing back-------Which Was Just Happened This Morning ! That “unmistakable signal” is surely an act to have a consequence of oil supply disruption ! Why is it not reported as a oil spiking cause ? ! Time to scapegoat China again before a major offensive ? To verify, I went to CNN web site , there it is : China hikes fuel prices China to raise energy prices But nowhere saying that Israel’s-Iran-attack-drill will unstablize the oil supply region, causing the oil price up. Has anyone ever tried evening primrose oil to induce labor? I am 2 days away from my due date. I am 2 centimeters and 70% effaced. Will it help me and is it safe?

Ethel replied: "It doesn't induce labor, what it does do is provide prostoglandin precursors that will help with ripening and thinning of the cervix. I used them internally, next to my cervix, and within 24 hours I was in labor with my youngest. It's safe as long as you are okay to have things inserted in your vagina."

ProudMom_of_2_gorgeous_boys replied: "Ive taken it, im all for it. It does NOT induce labor. It works like prostiglandins (Same stuff in sperm) to thin out the cervix, once the cervix thins the cervix will dilate more. Its a natural product and it is safe."

Busy Mommy of 2 (Expecting #3-♂) replied: "My OB suggested using EPO when I was 38 weeks and was having a lot of false labor. She suggested 2 capsules, twice daily and I took it for over 2 weeks and my water broke at 40 weeks, 3 days...i really doubt the EPO had anything to do with it. Ask your provider to see what their thoughts are on this. Good luck!"

HornyDawny replied: "No! Isn't it supposed to be good for Pre-Menstrual Tension hun? Tried Castor Oil and Fresh Orange Juice and driving over a few pot-holes! Don't laugh cos it actually worked, son born 20 hours later!!!(lol)xx"

2boyslostmind replied: "Evening primrose oil does not induce labor it helps soften your cervix and by softening your cervix helps with dialation but it doesnot cause you to go into labor. Yes I used it"

How to use evening primrose oil to induce labor? I am 2 days away from due date and want to try to get started, so any info would be helpful. thanks

Amanda replied: "When your body is ready, it will happen. I went into labor the same night I had sex, but it could have been a coincidence."

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ? replied: "Evening primrose doesn't induce labor per se ... it is used often for cervical ripening starting at 36 or 37 weeks. Ripening the cervix can create a favorable situation for labor to occur naturally, or aid in an induction. It is taken orally or inserted vaginally - generally 2 500mg capsules."

Due Dec 9th with little David replied: "I have only heard bad things about all the oils people use to induce labor. Try to let nature take its course, or use less invasive measures to induce labor. Walk, walk walk! Or try having sexual intercourse. Try a birthing ball and a warm shower. Best of luck and congrats!"

fiuhawg replied: "Since you are so close, you can insert it vaginally. You can buy it in gel tabs, there is a certain dosage that is recommended, but I know the tabs usually come in a higher amount, so you might want to cut one in half. Do some research first."

have you heard of using evening primrose oil to induce labor? I'm looking for info. do you know anything about this. I know that it has lots of prostaglandins which is the same thing that is in sperm which is why sex helps to induce labor. that is all I know. do you know anything else about this and also have you tried it? I'm almost 38 weeks butthe doctor said my cervix is as soft as butter so maybe I should try this if it is used to soften your cervix.

Ana replied: "no, but i do know that Olive oil , if you rub it for on the area...that it will help.. but, it seems to have a good effect.."

Future Mrs. Patrick replied: "No I havent but i dont think it will hurt anything"

moses315 replied: "SEX induces labor and it's more fun too.... only kinda messy for the poor kid."

lil_missymuffet replied: "I've not heard of EPO for inducing labour. I know raspberry leaf tea helps to prepare the cervix for labour. Or castor oil, it irritates the bowel and helps to rupture the membranes, I tried it and it took a week to work, and tasted disgusting! I really don't recommend it."

MomeeUvWun replied: "castor oil didnt work... lol nothing did i tried everything even sex... lol nothing works... if the baby is not ready... it will not come... trust me!! lol i was VERY late. good luck."

gana replied: "i used epo for 2 out of my 4 pregnancies it does help to softin the cervix insert one or two at night but make sure u put a pad on DO NOT USE IT BEFORE 36 WEEKS"

Evening Primrose Oil To Induce Labor? (I asked this earlier but I am going to ask again, I think I asked too late last night to get answers) At any rate- My midwife just told me about using Evening Primrose Oil Capsules (inserted inside of me) to help thin me out and possibly induce labor (I'm 80% effaced 2 cm dilated as of Wednesday). Has anyone tried this and how many capsules (500mg) did you use? Thanks... btw: I'm 40w4d pregnant and I am at my wits end on how to get this ball rolling.... I have been walking, running up and down stairs, intimacy, pineapple, acupressure.... So I am pretty much ready to give anything (except castor oil) a shot... I am starting to believe that all the things people have told me to induce labor is just a bunch of B*S, am I correct in assuming this? LOL...This is soooo frustrating!!!!!!!!! I want him OUT! I would definately be willing to take castor oil, I have just held off because I heard it can make the baby poo in the womb and make him sick, I don't know if it is true or not, I just didn't want to take a chance of hurting him.. I keep asking her to strip my membranes but she said I am not dilated enough.... I am going to give her a call tomorrow and see if I can run in and get checked for a membrane sweep.

misseasygoing replied: "Unless you are alergic to Castor Oil why is it anything but that? If you are alergic I understand, if not, suck it up if you want to try anything - personally I would rather suck that up than to shove capsules in the very area my baby is about to travel through!! ( I say this as I was at my wits end with both, took it and labour and the baby came very soon after) with lovely easy births too! Good luck to you and your baby!!"

sweetmusic replied: "I have never heard of that but I say "Go for it" if your midwife said it might help, I say start with one pill and see what happens and then put two up there if that doesnt work. Good Luck!! :-)"

Jacqueline replied: "Why won't you use caster oil? If you get the organic kind it's not bad - and you can't even taste it if you mix it with soda. I only took 2 tablespoons of it and was in heavy labor 5 hours later. Have you tried Red Leaf Raspberry Tea as well? That and if you bend your knees (lean on the edge of a counter or something or even the bed) and move your hips in an 8 motion it helps things to get going. Good luck and congratulations :) Check this site out too if you haven't already :) You'll get answers right away from a lot of different midwifes/moms etc."

simarik757 replied: "you should use three of the 500 mg pills daily. (from what I've read). Also, you should take an additional 1500mg orally."

Sharon G replied: "My midwife had me insert 2 to 3 capsules of Evenig Primrose Oil to help my cervix soften for the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy. She said it is like putting chapstick on your lips to keep them soft. She said nothing about induction from it. I am surprised that the midwife didn't want to strip your membranes. That sometimes helps to get labor going. How about nipple stimulation? You could have your husband suck on one breast for 10 min. then walk for 20, stimulate the other breast for 10 min, then walk for another 20. Keep that up for 3 or 4 hours because it causes your body to produce oxytocin (the natural form of pitocin) which will in turn allow you to contract. That is the only thing that I think will really truly help. With my second baby I went 5 days overdue and had, had a bumpy ride (almost rearended someone and drove into the ditch to avoid them) on my due date, Intercourse numerous times, walks late at night, mexican food (which isn't the right kind of spice, but I loved it) and none of those worked. ETA - don't take the castor oil without your midwife telling you to."

has anyone ever taken Blue and Black Cohosh with Pennyroyale, Evening Primrose Oil to induce or speed up labor has any one used these herbs or knew someone who has, to induce or speed up their labor?? if so did it work for you and what were your results, if any?

Mommy & Wife replied: "I took the blue/black cohosh with my last pregnancy, I didn't notice that it did anything. I still ended up being induced 2 weeks late. This pregnancy I have been inserting the Primrose Oil vaginally and can definetly see the changes, my cervix is softening and effacing."

omni4younc replied: "Hi, I have never taken it, but from personal exp. I have found that the best thing to get labor going, and speed it up is yes you guessed it the thing that got you in this situation to start with! SEX, also nipple stimulation and walking! Good luck I am sending you labor thoughts! AG"

How much Evening Primrose Oil do you use to induce labor and how do you use it? How much and how often do you use it and do you take it orally or vaginally? Also how much Red Raspberry Leaf tea should you drink to help start labor?

Gig replied: "Evening Primrose oil and red raspberry tea leaf are not labor induction tools, they are used to ready your body for labor... Evening Primrose Oil is a prostiglandin that will help to soften your cervix making it ready for dilation, but will not dialate you. You take approximately 1000mg twice a day. Either orally or as a vaginal suppository. Red Raspberry Tea Leaf helps to tone your uterus making your Braxton Hicks contractions actually work for your body. You drink it in a tea, or put it in your tea (if it's a tincture) approximately 3-4 times a day. Lots of women take red raspberry tea leaf all through their pregnancy to help make their uterus strong for when labor starts :) BTW the only reason these are listed under induction methods is because if your body is ready when your baby is ready then labor will come on naturally instead of having to be ripened and such in hospital. Only time will actually induce labor :)"

momma2mingbu replied: "EPO and RRLT don't induce labor. EPO can help to ripen your cervix, but it will not start contractions. In your final weeks of pregnancy you can prick two capsules with a pin and insert them vaginally right before bed. You can either leave the whole thing there to disolve or squeeze the oil out and rub it into your cervix. RRLT tones the uterus. This will make contractions more productive when they do come. It will not cause contractions. It also contains a lot of vitamin C, which can help you grow a strong bag of water. (Labor is easier the longer your bag stays intact.)"

Is there any harm in putting evening primrose oil on my penis and having sex with my wife to induce labor? Our last boy was huge (10lbs, 15oz) and our "nut & berry" dr. wants everything to be natural so she won't induce until she's past 41 weeks (she is at 39 now). I've read sex and evening primrose oil are good for naturally inducing labor, so I figure both together might be better. Can that hurt anything?

1Tourniquet replied: "nope nothing wrong with it."

bombastic replied: "Geez. The woman is about to give birth. Give her a break."

neice replied: "just to b on the safe side ask either a midwife, Dr or even a pharmacist. its better to b safe then sorry. good luck."

perkie5 replied: "The primrose oil is perfectly safe for your wife. If it is safe for her private areas it is for sure safe for yours. I say go for it and have fun. Just remember that having sex doesn't work for starting labor unless the women reaches climax. The climax makes the uterus contract and therefore hopefully it will continue to contract and induce natural labor."

Jen B replied: "EPO does not induce labor. All it does is help ripen and soften the cervix; and even that won't work if the body isn't almost ready anyhow. However, if your wife(or yourself) can reach, just check her cervix. If it is opening some and squishy inserting a couple EPO gelcaps before bed won't hurt anything."

Bee132 replied: "The oil might irritate her already sensitive vagina. Don't risk a yeast infection. Sex will most likely work the best at inducing labor, it is recommended by doctors. So go ahead have a lot of sex. It works best if she orgasms, might trigger contractions."

MrsMarried0701 replied: "I would be cautious about allowing her to go to 41 weeks. My mother was at 40 weeks and the amniotic fluid was drying up. They HAD to induce her. Please make sure she is having ultasounds done and being checked regularly to make sure it's safe to let her continue on. The evening primrose can be taken vaginally by suppository but I dont think I would recommend having sex with it. I would imagine it would be very messy and could cause her a yeast infection. I think you should also consult with your doctor about her taking the primrose because whatever she is putting in her body- she's also giving to the baby. I hope all goes well. GOOD LUCK!"

motherbugs replied: "Sex is always a natural way, make sure she reaches climax though. Not sure about the oil, I hear it works, I hear it doesn't, I hear it's safe and well i hear some just dont like it. Havn't heard anything bad about it, lets put it that way. If that doesn't work, have her get up and start walking, even at this point getting up and walkign is the last thing she wants to be doing but walking is a great natural inducing for labor, it just takes awhile, yeah I know you want it to happen now. But it's a way. I don't think it will hurt any, as long as she's feeling ok, go for it. Good luck! PS Some Dr's really don't ever induce, at my practice the only doctor that would be willing to do it was my doctor, and we'd had talked about doing it, I luckily went before, but still. It may not be because of anything else than what their practice does. If there's medical reason though, they'd do it, other than that they just won't... Why I don't know, some do , some don't. Stick with the sex,"

rambo replied: "I actually was told that you can insert those into the vagina. And they will disolve. It is supposed to help Overdue women.Become more dialated and hopefully start the labor process. by the way it was a professional Mid wife who told me it was okay."
