What is a safe calorie intake that won't promote starvation mode? I am 43 years old female and weigh 200 pounds. I am 5' 4" tall. For most of my life I have been slender. I have gone on a 1200 calorie diet and use a treadmill 3 times a week at the moment for 45 minutes each workout. In the last two weeks my weight loss has dropped to a pound a week and I have felt more tired than usual. I believe my body has gone into starvation mode. Any information I have found has said to consume the calories for your target weight, however that has cut my calorie intake to less than half of my previous intake. With exercize if I continue with the 1200 calorie intake will my body eventually start to lose the weight again or can I expect to continue to maintain my present body weight and stay in starvation mode?

sneakytrickster replied: "your body wont go into starvation mode if you eat 4-6 meals a day. try to have some protein every 3 hours or so. as long as you keep eating throughout the day, your body wont think it's starving and you'll keep your metabolism up."

Carp replied: "1200 for women is where alot of weight loss programs start but I usually see the level with programs that include wight training. Could you be consuming the wrong ratios of Carb, Protein, Fat? Try 60% Carbs, 20% Protein, and 20% fat. Also, you should really consider weight training if your doctor approves. Starting at age 30 we lose up to 1% of our muscle mass each year. The only way to stop it is to weight train. Weight train does not mean bulk up. It means an intense enough workout to build some muscle. As for starvation mode. Yes, I believe you may be in that mode. I say this because I often see this low calorie intake for plans that include some intense weight training. The weight training helps keep you out of starvation mode at low caloric intakes. You may have also cut too many calories to quickly. I don't like dropping more than 500 at a time. Say I want to cut 1000 calories out. I woudl drop 500 for a few weeks and then drop the next 500. I do this even when including weight training. Also, are you getting enough hydration? You can't burn fat efficiently without proper hydration. The liver takes over for the kidneys when your dehydrated taking away from the livers normal functions. Dr. Chiro added more good advice. 5-6 meals/snacks a day to keep blood sugar stable. Eliminate all High Fructose Corn Syrup."

Dr. Chiro replied: "You sound like you are doing everything right. Try increasing your intake to 1500 calories per day with healthy, high fiber foods, and possibly increase your exercise to 4-5 days per week for 30-45 minutes. This might increase your body's fat burning ability. Also, try dividing these calories into 5-6 meals per day. Good Luck!!!"

Safe weight loss - minimum calorie requirement? My objective: I weigh 88 kgs with 25%body fat and would like to reduce 8 kgs. My every day calorie intake : 2000 ( resting BMR: 2060) Calories I burn every day: 2700 A 700 calorie deficit. [ 700 X 30= 21000 calories/month. Hence I plan to loose 6lb/month or 2.7 kg/month ] i.e 3500 calories for an LB of fat Hence, By the end of 3 months I will achieve my goal to weigh 80kg. Is it safe enough for me to live with 1300 calories/day.

Chuck replied: "you need a minimum of 8 calories per pound you weigh"

busymonte replied: "Yes and no. Yes 'safe' but not to your diet, once your caloric intake is taken to low your metabolism slows to match the amount of food coming into the body. It all sounds and looks good on paper but the reality is that our body's are homeostatic organisms, meaning that they like to keep everything in balance so adjusting your diet will need to be evaluated on regular basis. How much depends on how adaptive your body is to dieting."

Safe calorie intake? On February 20th, I am 6 feet tall, i was 240 pounds, and today, i am 205 pounds, i have been working out almost every day, and doing tons of cardio I usually burn 800 - 1000 calories when i go, My senior prom is coming up May 10th and I want to look good, I have dropped my calorie intake to around 800ish a day, Is this a safe amount, ive had it there for 5 days, and my body seems to have adjusted to it, and ive been able to keep up my 800 - 1000 calories burned a day, and i have seen pretty rapid weight loss, I have been drinking lots of water to keep my fluids up. Is it likely in my situation that i may accidentally put my body into starvation mode, i really don't want that, how much is the minimum i should eat before i go into starvation mode? Prom is may 10th Oh and how much should i get my weight down to to be healthy?

Emily F replied: "You are supposed to be eating at least 1200 calories a day. Here's the deal, eating 800 calories a day is going to get you to lose some weight, but then your body is going to start staving and your metabolism will fail you and you will quit losing weight. So you need to eat at least 1200 a day in order to keep it up. The best way to calculate is to take your weight and multiply by 7 and eat that many, but never below 1200."

Fairouz_is_my_name replied: "that's good that's what i do and I'm 13 and weigh like 128. sucks but yea less then 1000 is my intake. and at school when i get hungry i eat a 100 calorie pack its good. don't eat out its unhealthy"

Hold On<3 replied: "You are burning more than you are eating which is causing a rapid weight loss, but keep in mind that if you have been working out you may have gained muscle and muscle weighs more than fat, you should prbly be about 180 pounds, but make sure you arn't eating 4 slices of pizza a day and calling it good, eat healthy foods and the lowest you should allow your body is 1500 calories, expecialy becuase you are working out, your body will go into starvation mode if you continue like this for 10 days or more, or less becuase of how much you are burning off."

_ replied: "good for you! dont worry you will be fine just dont make it a habit i have gone days without having anything but water and ive done this on and off for years and im still here.... 98lbs well done x"

bettey boopeydoop replied: "calories, fat and nutrients arnt just there to determine how much you weigh. They play an imprtant role. A big boy needs alot of calories to keep his heart pumping, and his lung, liver and kidneys functioning. You need your nutrients to have nice skin, hair and nails, be able to walk, talk or control your body. I think a low, but healthy amount to eat for a man of your size is about 1600. I know you may think i dont no what im talking about, but when i was fourteen i had cancer and after chemo finished, i got an ilness in my stomach. It meant i could absorbe calories nutrients and fat. I lost 84lbs in 3 months. at first it was great because i was a big girl in the first place. but then i coulnt control my body, my arms, legs and face would go into spasm and i would be poweless. I couldnt walk... i didnt have the energy to hold my body, my hair ( that had just grown back from chemo) fell out again... my skin went dry and flakey, and to top it off my kidneys packed in and my skin was getting rid of my urine through my skin.. i litrelly peed out of my pores... i stunk!!! so i know first hand what serious calorie reduction can so to you and its not pretty."

Latasha S replied: "I don't know, but you are going to be sooo hot! WOW! I am impressed with what you have already done, don't get too slim, we love some muscles now. Do what you are doing, maybe a couple sit-ups and push-ups, to bulk you up a bit, I think 6 foot 190 is great! Takin in atleast 2000, maybe more, but if you're burning off that much, you need to eat. Without any exercise your bady will burn off 1700 each day, and you're adding 1000 to that. You're a guy, and for some reason unbeknownst to me, you guys have it a lil' easier (so it seems from the outside looking in), so you will probably be where you want to be by then. Play ball, that's cardio in itself. How slim do you want to be? Good Luck! Ps: do the soulja boi x-tra hard for me ! ( I missed my prom, 2001, and I haven't gotten over it) Party hard, SAFELY, but hard!"

Fit Girl replied: "You can go to and there is a cool tool where you can enter your height, weight, etc.. and come up with a daily calorie intake that is healthy!"

is it safe to mix weight loss supplements? ive been taking acai burn and lipo 6 together everyday, is this safe...im 265 lbs...trust me ive been excersing and limiting what i eat, watching my calorie intake, and being mindful of what i put in my body! but to be honest, im not losing any weight and i dont know what to do! Help!

tommygavin04 replied: "Don't mix any of those! Weight loss supplements by themselves should be taken only under the advice of a physician and should definitely not be mixed! My honest ADVICE would be to stop taking them altogether, talk to your Dr. about losing weight, properly exercise and eat. Supplements may allow you to lose weight quickly but once you stop taking them, the weight will pile right back on as the adjustment they have made to your metabolism is removed."

Can eating complex carbs (like lentils) stall my weight loss? I watch my calorie intake carefully, so this isn't a question about calories. I know that eating a lot of refined flour and sugar can be bad for weight loss. Will complex carbs such as whole grains, chickpeas, and lentils also have any negative impact on my weight loss.........or are these safe to eat?

Bleak replied: "No, they're good, they help you feel fuller for longer so you won't have the urge to go munch something."

Lisa J replied: "You need to create a calorie deficit everyday to lose weight. it doesn't matter what you eat. don't overthink it. granted it's MUCH SMARTER to eat low calorie, healthy and nutritious foods. Just eat less than you expend in energy. that's how weight loss happens. so to answer your question, they DON'T stall your weight loss unless you eat more calories than you expend."

Lina A replied: "Hello, Carbs are the main source source of energy and should ideally represent about 60-65% of daily caloric intake. Cutting refined carbs out of diet is important for weight loss purposes (I see that you are already doing this), however it is important to consume complex carbs. Limit the consumption of whole grains if you are trying to lose weight however other complex carbs such as chickpeas and lentils need to be consumed regularly since they are good sources of fiber as well as contain important vitamins and minerals. Beans are also source of protein that will fill you up. As it is true for any other food, they should be consumed in moderation especially if you are trying to lose weight."

Jenny replied: "I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes. Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight. First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising... This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart. However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace .com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day. Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate."

Changing calorie intake from 2300 to 1800? Is it safe to change my calorie intake from about 2300 to 1800? It's quite a drop, and I figure I'll be eating healthier so it should not be an issue. Anyone know? I'm changing my eating habits to begin my weight loss (exercise included).

Ivan D replied: "you should do less do 2200 one day 2100 next 2000 next and so on till you get to 1800 so your body can adjust."

Stronger than yesterday replied: "Ya that's fine. 1,800 calories will keep anyone alive."

:) replied: "i went from eating anythign i want like 3000 calories probably to 1300 and it was perfectly fine"

JediMaster replied: "yes, you should be fine. If you take a close look at your diet and make small changes to tweek it, you'll do well."

Saint replied: "It's perfect. A 500 calorie change in your diet per day will result in about a 1 pound per week weight loss. If you start exercising and use say another 500 each day, that will work out to 2 pounds per week. This is the most successful way to lose weight and keep it off. I LOVE that you are "changing my eating habits" and not "dieting". This implies that you know if you go back to doing the things that got you overweight to begin with, you will again become overweight. It is a lifestyle change. Good luck. Don't get frustrated, just stick to your plan and wait for your body to adapt, it's a slow process."

Fat (not muscle) loss and weight loss plateaus? Hi, I lost about 20 pounds a year ago via the south beach diet AND exercise (cardio) as well as free weights to go along with the diet component. I am now at 5'5, 125 lbs approx. I am healthy and fit at this weight I realize, but the fat in certain areas has still not gone away, and as I stick to the healthy diet and exercise I still don't see the fat loss occurring in these areas. I realize there is a genetic component in the way one distributes fat on the body, so it will take time to burn fat in these areas. But I have been told that to get over this weight loss plateau, I have to reduce calorie intake further or exercise more, and I'm already exercising a good amount and continuing with the free weights. Only thing with cutting back in the diet is that I don't eat any unhealthy foods, so how much is safe to cut back? But I sometimes wind up eating white rice/noodles so I was wondering if I should cut this out of my diet altogether? I don't want to lose muscle mass, just fat. Thanks I am college student so a trainer is not an affordable option at this point. And I'm 19 years old, so shouldn't fat loss be easier at this age?

star replied: "LOOK weight loss is a life time battle. AND the older you get it seems that those areas have troubles. THE GYM where i lift weights and exercise they have trainers 4 that sort of thing. HELPING your trouble areas, maybe a trainer can help. IT wouldn't hurt 4 some advice."

crazy_daisy replied: "hey hun....congrads on your success!...well since you said you eat clean then i don't think you need to cut any thing else out...you may just need to lift some heavier weights if you have been useing the same ones and same routine....and try some protien powders or bars to help you build more lean muscle...the more lean muscle you have the more fat you burn so give that a try if ya like.....e mail me and let me know how it goes....love daisy"

Tara Fabulous replied: "My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days. On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home. The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better! Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results. Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated. Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!"

bigstrongbanana replied: "Get over your routine workouts and diet, try something different. Eat more and workout longer or fast for a day and sleep longer. Don't let your body system Plateau."

tranquil.sojourner replied: "Well, one thing that will surely help is to get your metabolism performing at its peak. To answer your question, rice noodles should definitely be removed from your diet. They do nothing but get deposited as pure fat onto your body. They have no nutrients in them. As for increasing your metabolism i.e getting your body to burn more fat when you are at rest This is something that I am working on very seriously. What I suggest is to read this book by the editior in chief of Mens Health "The Abs Diet". No, this is not another diet book. Basically just read the first 4 chapters of this book and it will give you a very good understanding on what foods to eat etc to help your body burn more calories. If you have a BORDERS or BARNES AND NOBLE nearby then go right in and read the chapters. I am sure you will be glad when you are done."

enufwork replied: "Congratulations on your success so far. Here are some thoughts for further gains from my 360 Blog September 10. There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below. The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode. Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy. To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine. For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet. Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further. There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you work them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive. If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets. Aloha"

Trying to lose weight, may be pregnant, safe to cut calories? my husband and i are trying to have a baby, but i feel like ive put on a few pounds. Would it be safe if i cut down to 1500 calories a day to help aid in weight loss? I dont want to do anything to put the potentail fetus at risk, and I ve never counted calories before. I used to be able to eat what i wanted. I am 5'7 and 145 pounds. (incase that should determine my calorie intake) Thanks for any info!

bonnie replied: "of course its good to be HEALTHY. dont cut calories like if you were on a chronic diet!! think about the diet, eat healthy, and exercise! all of us women should always be preggo so we can be healthy allll the time...haha. joke."

sexe2006 replied: "You are fine the way you are and if you are pregnant- do not do not! try to lose weight! go to your ob/gyn and they will tell you the same- you are well in the ratio of your height and weight! Congratulations and hope the babe is healthy!!!!"

Weight Loss? I had a baby eight months ago. I have lost all of the weight that I put on. YAY!! I would still like to lose about 30 more pounds. I set a goal for myself to be down to 130 pds. by January. That is about then pounds a month. I am eating very healty foods and doing heavy cardio with light weights for one hour, five days a week. Q: Is it safe to loose ten pounds a month?? Q: I am 5' 4" and weigh 160, what should my calorie intake be each day for maximum weight loss? I have Slim Fast for breakfast, usually salad, or tuna fish out of the packet for lunch with an apple or yougurt. For dinner I have grilled meats and veggies.

ninja replied: "It is safe to lose over 10 pounds in a month but "loose lips sink ships." There are more diets than ever and more people dieting than ever and yet we have the fattest society ever. So a lot of these ideas about losing weight, make you fatter. Cutting calories, carbs and fats can cause you to have a weight problem for life. It is better to eat differently. See site below and learn why lean meat and non-fat yogurt are so fattening. Also salt has no calories but makes you fat. This also has the quickest weight loss possible. Eat good carbs, not bad carbs. Nourish your body thin, instead of starving your body fat. Eat foods made by nature and avoid foods made by man which are designed to make you fat and very addicted to food. Do the ninja warrior diet (not a diet but a diet lifestyle). 5th link on "LINKS" page is BMI calculater to see if you are overweight. "

nicky replied: "Just cut out the fatty foods. Like red meat eat more protein (chicken, fish), vegetables. If you love coke like me cut that off and drink more water. Switch from white flour/bread to whole wheat. Excersise. I think it's safe they say the safe thing is 2lbs a week so your doing okay... Good luck."

woochiekoochie replied: "It won't make you fat if you eat anything in moderation. Eating leaner meat, cutting down carbo intake, and having more vegetables is a healthy diet . Do this with great work out and self-discipline will help you gain the lean and slimmer you in no time."

the typical weight loss question...? I'm a college student who just started commuting to school this semester, and this semester, I have gained nearly 20 pounds, which is 20 too many. I know the main factor in this is my environment. Before, I was always with my best friends who were all fit and thin which helped me work-out and watch my calorie intake. Now the people I am surrounded by are on the heavier side. The area in which I live does not have a gym nearby, nor is the area outside safe to run in, and I don't know how to go back down to the weight and body that I had before. Before I would only eat when I was hungry, which was at the normal times (breakfast, lunch, dinner) but now I'm hungry in between my classes, in the morning, and more often it seems. HELP PLEASE! I always feel so insecure when I see my friends b/c they look so fit, and I want to go back to what I was before. Thanks!

Christian replied: "you should buy a wii fit and then eat more vegetables as well try to not eat after 9 and no junk food for 3 weeks i know you got your studies but try to hit the sack by at least 11 try 10:30 sleep is the key factor in metabolic burn alongside proper eating habits you should also try to influence the people you hang around with as well theyre probably in the same boat your in"

andrea replied: "if you drink a lot more than you did before college....stop...bc it is extremely fattening do the math - colorie wise and also alcohol in your bloodstream stops the body from naturally burning calories from food that you eat so it affects your body in a double negative way!!"

itsjustme replied: "Start eating small healthy snacks in between meals. Crunchier the better. Carrots, celery any type of vegetable. Be careful of fruit though because they are high in natural sugars. Buy a workout dvd. The type that is only 20min. Stay away from unhealthy meals. Its not what you eat, its how much of it."

A W replied: "I'll give you my standard advice: keep a food diary! It really helps make you aware of what and when you eat and how you can do better. ARe you eating more junk food now that you're on the go? Can you store healthy snacks somewhere and just take some when you go to class? Also, make sure that you drink plenty of water! If you have a cup of water each time you're tempted to snack when you're not hungry, you'll do yourself a double-favor! As far as fitness goes, you don't need a gym. Get a jump rope and start jumping 15-20 minutes a day. You can also get some pretty cheap handweights to do some toning exercises. Good luck!"

kippy710 replied: "Make a daily routine for workouts like yoga in your room and get into the habit of eating lots of vegetables and fruits. You can also try chewing fat free gum to get your mind off of food. And when you're getting ready to eat something like junk food, stop, think, and say "I'm NOT hungry!" This worked for a friend of mine! GL to you :)"

Sai2301 replied: "start doing indoor workouts like yoga, dance and rope skipping...eat more veggies"

late_night_surfer replied: "Dieting alone really isn't the way to go- you really have to diet and exercise to see and keep results (especially true when it's only 20 lbs). Diet wise, it is ok to have frequent small snacks to curve your appetite so I'll suggest some healthy ones: fruit (oranges, apples, grapes, grapefruit, kiwi) and nuts (almonds) will help you to avoid cravings. Drinking lots of water is also key (try about 8 glasses a day). You may actually be dehydrated, which is why you think you're hungry. I've heard the 15 min rule sometimes works- when you're hungry for snack, drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes. If you're still hungry have the snack (but most of the time, you won't be). Exercise wise, have you tried buying a yoga mat and a excerise ball? Using these 2 things, you can exercise in the comfort of your own room. Use the mat to do yoga (you can get poses from the internet, books, videos etc.), pushups, situps and leg raises. And you could use the ball for assisted squats and tons of other stuff (here's a good site:). Using just these 2 items, you could even make yourself a circuit where you do each excerise for 2 minutes. For cardio indoors and without having to spend too much money you could do skipping which is great- professional boxers do this and it gets fast results, or running up and down stairs. If you're lucky enough to have a Wii, i've heard the Wii Fit game is pretty fun and can be a decent workout."

Lauren M replied: "I've been using diet and exercise along with a natural supplement to help lose a few pounds. So far so good as I'm losing at about 4.25 pounds per week. I'll post a link to the supplement I've been using below. It's called Super no. 12 foods cause it's made of ingredients found in foods we commonly eat. Great energy booster and helps the body burn energy instead of storing it as fat. I really hope this helps. Good luck and don't give up!"
