Reglan During Pregnancy Facts in Questions
Is Reglan really safe during pregnancy? I've been having some serious problems with blockages and constipation recently (I'm 28 weeks) which have resulted in a hospital stay and excruciating pain in my left side and leg. My doctor put me on Reglan and it's helped some, my pain is less severe, but I've heard a lot of bad things about it. Any opinions or information you may have heard? Anybody else take it during pregnancy with no problem? Thanks

whinie_p replied: "I am taking it now with my pregnancy because I was having problems with my blood sugar dropping dangerously low (in the 30s and 40s!) as a result of some nausea which led to me not eating well. Anyway I have not had any problems."

Reglan for reflux during pregnancy? Wondering if anyone has taken reglan for reflux during pregnancy. I'm probably going to be starting it, as other meds aren't helping. I read the side affects of reglan though, and got a little worried.....twitching, nervousness, jitteryness??? Has anyone taken this, what are you experiences with it? It's really the only thing left for me to try for this horrible reflux. Thanks!

red_phoenix777 replied: "I would switch to Prevacid, it has no side effects and works like magic for my reflux while I was pregnant with my daughter, a life saver!!!!"

ladymoonlight replied: "I'm not sure what Reglan is - I'm the UK and we have different brand names over here. But firstly you shouldn't take anything in pregnancy without asking your doctor. There are safe medications which you can take in pregnancy (contrary to what most people think) but the only person who's going to know whats safe and whats not is an OB or a doctor who knows their stuff about pregnancy. I was given Rantidine (Zantac - dunno what its called in the USA) for heartburn (reflux) and it worked really well - but that was prescribed by my OB Consultant. I tried Gaviscon (the liquid that most women take for heartburn) and found it just made me sick, so Ranitidine was all there was left, but my OB Consultant said it was fine in pregnancy. He also prescribed me Metoclopramide for sickness (I think thats Reglan) and I found the best way to take it was half a tablet at a time as otherwise it made me feel really sleepy. Check with your doctor before you take anything."

Reglan (metoclopramide) during pregnancy? Has anyone taken this for nausea? I was prescribed this last week but am hesitant to take anything (including Tylenol). I did take it twice, so far, and it seems to knock out the nausea completely. I read it was not known whether it was safe to use during pregnancy or not. My nausea isn't "that" bad. Your experience with this medications? [Almost 9 weeks pregnant with number 2.]

Unique~* replied: "I took it and it helped me. I took it for a few weeks. I had no problems at all. The nausea didn't completely stop for me until i was about 6 months."

Harley replied: "It's fantastic! I don't know anyone that has had a bad experience with this or their child for that matter. If you are able to function on it, eat/drink what you are supposed to, take it. You know your nausea is bad when they put you on Zofran. Look at this as a step down from that. Zofran is a bit more fantastic."

Barbara S replied: "Reglan is rated a "B" as far as medications go during pregnancy. That means it's probably safe, and has been used extensively with no known adverse effects to the fetus. You won't ever find any "definite" information on whether or not a particular drug is safe to take during pregnancy, because obviously it's too risky to perform experiments and tests when a woman is carrying a child. However...I was also prescribed Reglan, and my nausea and vomiting was quite bad at 5 weeks. I took it twice. The first time I took it, I didn't think it did much more than make me super tired (I literally felt drugged). The second time I took it, I had an allergic reaction. I had uncontrollable muscle spasms for six hours in my arms and neck. Luckily my baby was unharmed, and my neurological exam checked out fine, so all was okay. Most of my problem stemmed from outrageous heartburn anyway, so the doctor said just to take Pepcid AC (which is also rated a "B"). I hope you have much better luck with this medication than I did."

Anyone else taking reglan/ nausea medicine during pregnancy? I couldn't drink or eat for 3 days straight so i want to the E.R. and they put me on reglan. I'm nervous about taking it while i'm pregnant but at the same time i don't know if it's worse not to eat and drink. Do you think this stuff is really safe for baby?

krispeds replied: "I have heard it to be safe during pregnancy. I think pregnancy category B. Women use it sometimes while nursing to increase milk supply too. Although if the side effects are bad, talk w/ your doctor about using something different."

tbs replied: "Relax, they would not gave given it to you if it was not safe. I had morning sickness real bad too, and I was given phenegram(?) but I couldn't even keep that down!!! GOOD LUCK!!"

Lisa replied: "At that point, they have to consider your safety. If you're seriously ill, you can't deliver a healthy baby, right?? If it was that bad, they wouldn't have given it, but at times like that, they weight the pros and cons and feel that it's for the best outcome. I've been given meds that weren't safe during pregnancy for the same reason. But I have 3 healthy babies! Don't stress, it will probably be ok."

Krystal G replied: "I took reglan and it is perfectly safe. I had the worst morning sickness for the first 5 months and I lost 22lbs. My doctor prescribed reglan and I was actually able to eat. Trust me it is very important that you eat and drink and after taking the medicine you will feel so much better."

memaw replied: "yes my daughter is 25 weeks pregnant and was put on reglan at 8 weeks she also has an inflamed gallbladder."

tammer1973 replied: "I took it, it doesnt hurt the baby. The dr knows that its better to use it if needed then to leave the symptoms untreated."

Has anyone ever used zofran or reglan during first 6 weeks of pregnancy? My daughters doctor has given Rxs for both as she is very severely sick. I was surprised that they gave anything

Jilli Bean replied: "They are both very strong meds that are process in the liver and are running through your daughter and her baby. I'd think long and hard before giving a 6 week old fetus anything that strong. I understand she is very sick, but it'll get better over time."

Memphis Kitten replied: "Reglan is generic for Phenergan and safe during pregnancy. I don't know anything about Zofran though."

MrsZ replied: "If they gave her Rx's they are worried that she will dehydrate and possible lose the baby. I had zofran throughout and was also hospitalized due to severe dehydration. I preferred the zofran suppositories because I threw up the pills. I'm fine and my son is the picture of health. I had to have zofran in my IV during my c-section!! I was in sad shape, but am totally fine with my current pregnancy. She and baby will be fine."

mommy of one replied: "I used raglan but i was farther along than she is. I think i was about 12 week. it made me sleepy. But it did help with keeping my food down."

k replied: "I was the same way and the dr said to take them because i had to keep going to the e.r. and the benefits outweigh the risks. If the dr. said to take them do it. I feel much btter not 100 percent but enough so I can function. they said if my meds did not help I would have to be hospitalized. So it won't hurt the baby. You need to have a heatlhy mom to have a healthy baby. I know it wil pass but I have had a severe case of it. Good luck and the baby will be fine!!"

gumby replied: "I've taken both that early in all 3 of my pregnancies. The effects of these drugs are so minimal on the fetus and are usually not prescribed unless the morning sickness is so severe that it can cause a miscarriage or serious illness in the mother. In 2 of my pregnancies I had picc lines (sort of like permanent IV lines) installed so I could take the meds intravenously along with fluids and tpn nutrition. Don't listen to the above poster who said she shouldn't take anything and that it will get better. Hyperemesis (severe morning sickness) is debilitating and can destroy the liver and kidneys along with every other organ in your body that needs water. If your daughter cannot hold anything down she needs to be on those meds. Check out for more info. Good luck."

Exercising and feeling better during pregnancy? I am 11 weeks pregnant. Have suffered from morning sickness 24 7 since week 5. Severe food aversions, and smells, and was dry heaving and sometimes throwing up 5-6xs a day up until about a week ago. I have read everything on internet and tried just about all.. thinking I'm starting to feel better and am taking reglan, but now headaches are kicking in-tylenol doesn't cut it. I am going to try chlortrimeton today- that helped early on for allergies and I'm sure the headaches are sinus related. Anyway... any out there sugg.? And also, I was not reg. exercising when got preg, outside of walking. Needless to say, I feel so completely out of shape as I have been really lazy, or as lazy as I can be and still keep 2 1/2 year old happy thru all of this morn sickness etc. Any exerc or sites recomm. for preg safe stretching and shape stuff that has worked for any of you? I'm a small person but am afraid going to gain too much as I have to never have comp. empty stomach. Thnx in advance!!

anonymous replied: "talk to a doctor"

arianna3at replied: "check with your doctor about what med your are taking tylenol made things worse for me prenatal yoga is an easy way to get excersising while pregnant and i loved it"

nenanena replied: "Swimming is a great option. You can try to alternate swimming with walking. Swimming will strengthen and stretch your muscles while walking will help your bones get used to the increasing weight. This was recommended by my doctor and it has really worked for me. The beginning of my pregnancy was similar to yours, so I didn't have the chance (or energy) to exercise. I was a bit overweight also. After week 13 my energy came back and I begun exercising. Swimming, together with a balanced diet, has help me to stay healthy. I even lost some weight! Just remember to stop if you feel any pain in the belly. Take it easy and good luck! Hope this helps."

Susanne replied: "Swimming and walking are both good options. There are also some pregnancy workout videos. Definitely talk to your doctor though before starting any exercise program."

owllady1000 replied: "It's almost summer, and I recommend swimming for excercise. As for the morning sickness, you have to eat several small snacks all day. The trick is not to let your stomach get empty. Stay away from sugary things and diet sodas. Eat more fresh fruits and veggies. I don't know how preggy you are but the morning sickness should abate or completly dissapear soon. Good luck to you."

mikeae replied: "Before you go on any excersize program, especially since your pregnant, you shoudl consult your doctor. It is not about you anymore. You have a new life growing inside of you and taking care of that precious gift is paramount."

WhatEVER27 replied: "You are still in the first trimester which you are subject to migraines...Call your OB to give you something strong than Tylenol..Going through the same thing. It's perfectly ok to exercise..As long as you are not over doing it..Know your limits..Exercising now, helps in the delivery.. As for the morning sickness..each pregnancy is different. With my last child I went through the morning sickness until I was about 5 months..It varies.. My Dr. prescribed me Zofran..I don't know what I'll do without it! Mommy of 3 with another one on the way!"

kelley2387 replied: "Talking to your doctor is the best thing. Simply walking and keeping active would help with the feeling out of shape. But talk to your Doctor he/she can help you more and they can tell you exactly what kind of exercises suit you."

Ava replied: "Wow, you are having a rough time of it honey. I can sympathize with you because years back I was similiar. I tried just to get walking around my neighbourhood--back lanes actually, as I was in a bitchy mood. It worked. I walked and the walking grew with me......I have had 4 children now, just a year apart!! I was careful what I ate.....vegs. and fruits lightly taken....and no caffeine ---makes you sick actually. I drank herb tea and cinnamon in it made my stomach much better. and I read any books that interested me. When I found a comfy spot on a bed/couch/chair I would curl up here and there for 20 min. and enjoy reading. I actually got hooked on silly teen books for awhile--Nancy Drew--can you believe it!! and I was a university major!! haha anyway I read and read and well I made it.... luv Ava"

craftladyteresa replied: "Water aerobics are the best! You get a good work-out with no impact, and as your baby grows, having the extra weight off of your joints will feel sooooo good. My husband and I "aquacized" together during my pregnancy, and it helped us both have more energy during the day and sleep better at night, which is saying something when you're pregnant lol!"

Worried about my anti-nausea pills during pregnancy? I was so sick with morning sickness that I couldn't keep liquids down. So my doctor prescribed me to take Ondansetron (Zofran) and Metoclopramide (Reglan.) I haven't throw up once since I started them yesterday, still a little sick to my stomach, but keeping food and liquids down. But now I have a headache, I can deal with this, it's not even so bad I want Tylenol (just bad enough to take my hair out of it's ponytail though.) Now I worry about what the baby is getting. Would my 7 week old baby be getting headaches too? What if any amount of medicine is getting through to baby? I know my doctor wouldn't give these to me if she didn't feel like they weren't safe, but I still worry. I wonder if I should go off of the pills when I'm just at home, I can deal with short bouts of nausea and if I get dehydrated again I can just take the pills and get water down. What are your experiences or knowledge about these pills or other anti-nausea pills during pregnancy?

sasha_1207 replied: "just trust your doc"

Chella-Raelynn Marie due 10/7/09 replied: "yea my anti nausea pills made me more sick than ever! Blurry eyes, headaches it was just ALL bad, so i stopped them, the morning sickness (as bad as it was) was better than when i was on those pills! Good luck it does get better!"

Classychic04 replied: "My friend girl took some months ago when she was pregnant with her son...Her and her son are fine now! Everything you take and or go through does affect the baby in some kind of way ofcourse but it shouldnt harm the baby. Your doctor would never give you anything that would! Make sure you just stick to reg tylenol and whatever your doctor has you take. Good luck girlie!!!"

Becky replied: "Your baby's fine =) i took some for a bit just when i really needed it and it sounds like you do so don't worry =)"

storm_goddess23 replied: "I was on reglan and phenergan (sp?) with my last pregnancy and my daughter came out fine."

catrina230 replied: "I'm actually glad you posted this because i am in the same position. My dr. prescribed me phenergan for my morning sickness because i couldn't keep anything down, and then Metoclopramide for my car sickness/motion sickness. I haven't taken the Metoclopramide yet but today was my first day taking phenergan and i have had a HORRIBLE headache in the left side of my head/eye all night. I read the directions and it said do not use during pregnancy unless your dr. feels the benefits outway the risks, so i am a little nervous and wondering if i too should stop taking it and just suck it up until my second trimester. I will tell you i was told to go to the pharmacy and ask for a SEABAND they are bracelets you wear on your wrists that target pressure points to stop nausea, i got some today (they are 8.00 for 2) and they actually seemed to work for the time i had them on."

Erika - Bean due Feb 11 2010 replied: "You should ask your doctor about vitamin B6. It's completely healthy for baby and I have so far found it to be a lifesaver with morning sickness. I don't know about the ones you're on currently, though."

Meggan, RN replied: "Dehydration is much worse for you and your baby than the very little amount of the Zofran, Reglan, and Tylenol that he/she may be getting. All three of these drugs are safe to use while pregnant, and the doctors I work with prescribe them all the time. I seriously doubt your baby is getting a headache as well, but he/she may be feeling the effects of stress on your body, induced by the headache. If you don't want to take medicine for the headache, you can try taking a warm shower or bath, putting a cool towel on your forehead, and/or lying down in a darkened, quiet room."

Jordan replied: "I know you probably have heard this already but it will most likely all go away at around 12-15 weeks. It did for me! If the doctor prescribed it to you then it is fine to take while you are pregnant. What I did was i took ginger root vitamins, ate crackers, and drank sprite! Just try and keep carbs around so your stomach does not feel empty. Hope these help :)"

SkinCarePrincess replied: "No sweetie, your baby is not getting headaches because you are. Your baby will stress if he/she feels you stressing out. Your doctor is not going to give you anything, or tell you to do anything, that is going to harm you or the baby. If you want to ease the headache without medication, you can take your thumb and press on the bottom of your heel. That's the area for reflexology if I'm not mistaken! You can also take your fingertips and put them on each side of your neck, right below your head, and tip your head back, relaxing your head on your hands. This allows more oxygen to enter the brain."

Unique Snowflake replied: "I got sick during my pregnancy from the second trimester until I was in labour, and even then I threw up once (from the epidural; emergency c-section). Nothing I took worked at all, but I found that it would be exacerbated by things such as low blood sugars (I'm diabetic) and motion. Which meant that I was sick EVERY SINGLE TIME I got in a vehicle to go to work, or shopping or whatever I was doing that day. The thing is, you must keep things down for yourself and your baby. You and your baby are sharing nutrients, so if you don't have enough, the baby will take them anyway and leave you with a deficiency. If these drugs help you keep food down, they might be very necessary. If this goes on long term, you could be in a bit of trouble. So, take the drugs when you need them, and try and endure the headaches. My case is not typical, so there is a big chance that you will stop having nausea after the first trimester is over. I found the Ginger tablets did nothing, and the only way I coped with the combination of nausea, reflux and vomiting was to always have soda water and milk around. Not together, of course, that would probably make you feel worse ;) I really enjoyed my pregnancy, despite nausea and some very embarrassing public vomiting (haha) and I hope you have the opportunity to relax and reflect on the changes happening in and to you :) Congratulations on your pregnancy, good luck :)"

Brandee W replied: "I was diagnosed with severe morning sickness at 6 weeks pregnant and kept havcing to get stronger and stronger anti nausea meds. Finally they gave me Reglan and it would calm my stomach down enough to make me not puke but like you, it made me feel crappy. However, I figured that I rather feel crappy than throw up and become dehydrated because THAT can cause harm to the baby. The anti nausea meds are nothing compared to a dehydrated mother. Just keep taking them, your OB knows what is safe for your baby, they go through years and years of schooling."

Has anyone taken Zofran during pregnancy? At 9-1/2 weeks, I think I'm at my wits end. I'll have one day where I can eat without throwing up, and then the next three days or so I won't be able to hold anything down. My nausea seems to be getting worse and worse. I talked to my doctor this morning, and she called in a prescription for Zofran for me. I'm going to pick it up later and would like to know if anyone else has taken it, how it made you feel, and whether or not it worked and allowed you to eat and drink with some normalcy. The doctor stressed I'd have to be admitted if it didn't work to the point where I could at least keep liquids down consistently. I have already tried Reglan, which gave me an allergic reaction. If anyone could give me their experiences, I'd greatly appreciate it.

liljess69692004 replied: "It is safe. according to this website. "

Lynnette T replied: "Yes, I was given Zofran after going into the ER for dehydration, vomiting, and a bad headache. It really really helps...it's the best stuff to take during pregnancy for nausea. The ER doc. did tell me not to drink anything for 20 minutes after taking it. And yes, if you aren't able to keep liquids down orally, the only way to get them in you is by IV fluids. Sip gatorade, it's like IV fluids in a bottle. Good Luck, I hope everything works out. I have heard a lot of positive responses about others whom were prescribed Zofran as well!"

Kris H replied: "I took Zofran for several weeks and it was the only thing that helped me through the day. I was hospitalized twice for dehydration and that's when they wrote me the prescription. I took the kind that disolves under your tongue, and I found it worked best to keep it by my bed and take on before I got up in the morning. Then, about 30 to 45 minutes later eat breakfast."

Kristy replied: "I was prescribed just one to take before my glucose tolerance test because I kept throwing up the stuff I had to drink. The Zofran did work in that I didn't throw up, but it gave me a terrible headache. Good luck."

For people who have used Zofran in Pregnancy? I've been taking Zofran for nausea during my pregnancy after trying Reglan and Phenigran. Both those didn't work, so my Doc put me on this. The first 3-4 days I thought this was a miracle drug, I could finally keep food down and felt great, but then the severe stomach cramps, bloating, constipation and bad headaches set in (all the side effects). I stopped taking it for a week or so to ease up these things, and then got the vomiting back so of course was miserable. Now I've worked out just taking it in the mornings and it seems to work pretty good but I still can't get rid of the other symptoms (tried milk of magnesia, colace etc) and the box actually says to take every 6 hours all the time even if you feel fine. Should I keep taking this and suffer the rest, or what? Help lol. Or should I just get off everything and be miserable enough where it's extremely difficult to make it through the whole day @ work and I'm always running to the bathroom? Sorry to be graphic lol. - I have spoken to the Doc about the symptoms I am having, she says they are normal for this drug and to do what I think is best for me. And I don't know how I feel lol.

tessa46 replied: "better see a doctor, have you tried eating crackers, and drink sprite it settles your stomach"

julz_shelton replied: "I used zofran only after phenergan didn't work. I really only got constipated. If I had any other side effects I don't remember because I was just so happy to not throw up. Go to helpher.org. It's dedicated totally to hyperemesis. They have a very supportive online community, and you could get some tips on how to deal with the side effects maybe. You might not need to take as much as what it says. I weaned off by the time I hit 4-5 months and didn't need it after that, but still vomited only once every morning the entire preg. (A small price to pay for round the clock) Every womans hyperemesis is different, just experiment. Good luck.. I've been there. It was all worth it though :) OMG Don't listen to people that recommend crackers.. they don't understand this isn't morning sickness. None of that "crackering" bs worked for me.. ginger ale, seabands, crackers, peppermint, ginger.. you name it, I tried it."

momma2b replied: "I did take the generic version of Zofran and I thought it was the miracle drug too... but I didnt experience any of the side effects, expect I have headaches now but my morning sickness is long gone.. If I were you I would call your dr and talk to them. Tell them the symptoms you are having... the only thing that isnt a pregnancy symptom as well is the stomach cramps... I mean you have growing pains, but I would be concerned about the cramps... You can take tylenol to help with the headaches, and my prenatal vitamin has a stool softner in it so that helps with the constipation... but dont feel bad about calling your dr they are there for YOU otherwise... with out their patients they wouldnt have an office! Good luck!!!"

Mommy Due 8/12/08 replied: "Ok, I'm at 26 weeks now and I've taken Zofran in the beginning because my morning sickness was MISERABLE for me. My doctor prescribed it to me and it's totaly safe. I would say keep taking it if you are miserable, you don't need to be in misery. My morning sickness ease at 12weeks exactly so I didn't need it anymore. I hope this helps."

Junebug - Due 6/16/08 replied: "I took Zofran at the beginning of my pregnancy too because I was sooooo sick. It worked like a charm, I didn't take it all the time though. I didn't notice experiencing any side effects, although I may have and just chalked it up to feeling horrible because I was pregnant. Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy. I hope your sickness goes away soon, I know how aweful you feel!"

purpose82 replied: "I am currently 21 weeks pregnant. I also had horrible all day morning sickness and went to the ER 3x for dehydration and my Dr. put me on Reglan and Phenigran which didn't work and just made me feel drugged. I ended up losing 13lbs and I was finally put on Zofran and I used it for about a month taking the pills 2x a day, towards the end of my 1st trimester I was only taking 1 a day. Long story short I had to stay on Zofran until my 16th or 17th week of pregnancy and I did suffer from horrible constipation from in which I was prescribed a stool softener, but did not have any cramps. For years I have suffered from headaches so nothing changed there. Now I feel great, no morning sickness and I actually have a appettite( a healthy one at that). But I would talk to your dr. all in all it depends on what you can handle, my morning sickness was hurting my baby more because I could never eat and felt exhausted, versus the meds that helped me to actually eat and drink. I'm not sure how far along you are in your pregnancy but for most women the nausea subsides after the 1st trimester. But again I would also try the crackers, peppermint tea. You MUST eat something as soon as you wake up (crackers, dry cereal, ginger helps and with me sour things would help) But I understand exactly what your going through, but now at 21 weeks I am eating, have energy, no sickness at all and my daughter is healthy and growing at a good rate. Good Luck"

lukluvamy replied: "Hi! I also had severe “morning sickness” (which was really 24/7 sickness) and they put me on Zofran first off all. I took it every 6-8 hours just like it said, and it helped a little bit, but I was still getting sick. Then about after a week of taking it, I got severely constipated. I had to go to the bathroom, I just couldn’t, I was miserable. I decided I’d go off the Zofran to see if it helped with the constipation (I read that constipation was a side effect) and after a few days with not taking it, I was finally able to go (what a relief!). (It’s hard to believe some of the things we take for granted when we can’t go! Hehe.) I told my doctor and they put me on Phenigren. It worked ok, but I didn’t like it because it makes me so sleepy. I decided to just stick it out and only take the Phenigren when I absolutely had to, and thankfully, my sickness started easing up around 17 weeks. Now I don’t take anything at all hardly (some days I might take a half of a phenigren). It’s hard to pick between having the side effects of the medicine, and being so sick, I know what you are going through and it is a tough decision! How far along are you? If you are a little further along, you might could try not taking the meds and seeing if the nausea will ease up on it’s own shortly. That’s what I done and thank God it eased up some. I’m sorry I’m not much help, but I wish you the best and I’ll pray for you (and the baby too!) Have a great day and hope you feel better! 25 weeks with me and my husbands first!"

Reglan nausea medication while pregnant ? Just wondering if anyone else has used it during their pregnancy? I was prescribed this for my extreme morning sickness ... this is the last measure before being hospitalized because I can't eat. I am just curious of any possible effects other people my have had with this drug?

Etta22 replied: "I took this drug during my last pregnancy. I did not have any side effects. My baby is now 4 months old."

Baby #2 on the way! [12-25-09] replied: "I had no side effects from it, other than it making me sleepy. I now have a happy, healthy 7 month old daughter. It's safe. They wouldn't give it to you otherwise. Hope you're able to feel better soon, I know being that sick can feel hellish."
