what is the difference between codeine and codeine phosphate? robaxisal contains "codeine phosphate" while tylenol contains "codeine" what's the difference?

Monkfish replied: "Phosphates are fertilizers so it's likely in there to make you fit & strong, A degree of responsibility is always essential with phosphates as they are an active constituent in bomb making & it is therefore important to keep them away from children & Muslims"

Browneyez08 replied: "Actually most medications contain some form of salt so that the body can break down the medicine better including vitamins ect. Different countries and even pharmaceutical companies use phosphates or hydrochloride for body absorption. If its a phosphate it is most likely used as a liquid form of medicine."

is it safe to take 3 acetaminophen and codeine phosphate? is it safe to take 3acetaminophen and codeine phosphate? each tablet contains acetaminophen USP.......... 300mg codeine phosphate...... 30mg?

robertson249 replied: "ya thats fine , take more if your not feeling it, or just smoke some marijuana its awesome"

Fastermaster replied: "NO Big NO That will blow your liver away bud. Do not do it. Switch to ibuprofen or aspirin. Drink tons and tons of water or juices. I do not know what your body weight is, but that is enough acetominaphen to really do some damage."

Mathieu replied: "It is not really harmful to take three. The acetaminophen is the bigger concern. Three tabs would be 900 mg. The maximum dose of acetaminophen at one time is 1,000 mg. So you are under that. BUT check with your doctor before you increase the dose of your medication."

Is taking 240mg of codeine phosphate in one dose every day dangerous? I know about the addiction side, but I wondered whether doing this is damaging to the body?

T Mason replied: "It is not dangerous but it is the MAXIMUM amount someone should be taking in 24 hour intervals, so just be aware of the time when consuming."

Stace replied: "Yes, it is potentially very dangerous. The normal adult dosing is 15-60mg every 4-6 hours. The maximum in one dose should not exceed 60mg. The larger doses can increase the risk of codeine's side effects such as respiratory depresion, low blood pressure, slowed heart rate, seizures.... I recommend you only take the amount prescribed by your doctor, if the doses he/she prescribed aren't working, you need to talk to your doctor again to see what else they could try. **Update** As far as the previous person stating that it was ok for you to take the 240mg at once, that is not correct. 240mg is the maximum amout recommened for a 24 hour period - not in one dose. One dose should not exceed 60mg."

Eve replied: "Hi, just wanted to know firstly if this is a question that is personal to you (is it you taking the codeine basically?) If it is then i know you say that you know about the addiction part of it but if you are still taking it then im sorry but you don't understand the extent of it! Please just read my questions (found on my profile) I have a bad codeine addiction and am now up to 420mg of codeine at a time (which would kill you if you were not used to it just to let you know!). At the end of december i was taking exactly 240mg at a time...this has escallated up to 420mg at a time over just a few weeks!!! so...basically what i'm tyring to say is that i thought that i understood the addiction side of it and that i was in control but i am a complete state now and don't know what to do about it...so if you think that you can carry on taking this dose and stick to it your wrong......after a couple of doses it wont work anymore and you'll end up taking more just to get the same effects! i'm guessing you didnt start as a dose of 240mg but at a much lower dose and this has just escalled over time!...i don't want to lecture you but if i want you to understand how this drug takes over and controls a ruins you life! and beleive me i thought it was just a bit of fun...a pick me up or whatever at first because it does not seem serious when you don't get the bad efffects from it! If this is not a post for your self then yes i can answer your question..... *the main concern is addiction..leaving that aside * from experience a dose of 240mg can make you feel *light-headed or faint *confused *hallucunate *feel agitated *slow down your heart beat *give you problems with urination *give you insommnia *dry mouth *constipation *blurred vision *rashes *blackouts * serious breathing problems (you can actuley stop breathing) Hope this help, if this is for your self, please do read my posts, i think it might put you off Codeine. Good luck and if you want anymore advise please let me know! E xXx"

Long term use of Codeine Phosphate 30mg? Hello, I was wondering if there was any physical side effects of using codeine phosphate for long term use apart from the possible addiction? Thankyou!

Candy A replied: "The most frequent adverse reactions include lightheadedness, dizziness, sedation, nausea, and vomiting. These effects seem to be more prominent in ambulatory than in non ambulatory patients, and some of these adverse reactions may be alleviated if the patient lies down. Other adverse reactions include euphoria, dysphoria, constipation, and pruritus. Drug Abuse and Dependence Controlled Substance: Codeine phosphate is a Schedule II narcotic. Dependence Although much less potent in this regard than morphine, codeine can produce drug dependence a.d. therefore, has the potential for being abused. Patients given 60 mg codeine every 6 hours for 2 months usually show some tolerance and mild withdrawal symptoms. Development of the dependent state is recognized by an increased tolerance to the analgesic effect and the appearance of purposive phenomena (complaints, pleas, demands, or manipulative actions) shortly before the time of the next scheduled dose. A patient in withdrawal should be treated in a hospital environment. Usually, it is necessary only to provide supportive care with administration of a tranquilizer to suppress anxiety. Severe symptoms of withdrawal may require administration of a replacement narcotic."

TheBigBam replied: "I'm not a doctor/ pharmacist but a quick Google search brought up the following long term effects (of general narcotics): tolerance, dependency, AIDS, endocarditis, hepatitis from contaminated syringes, death."

can I take tramadol after taking 60mg codeine phosphate already? I also took 1000mg paracetamol and 100g dicolofenac acid. I am in agony with toothache and it just wont settle!

What is the street value of acetaminophen and phosphate codeine oral solution? I spent over 300 dollars at the hospital on medicine, I never used. What is the street value so next time I don't get ripped off?

Michael replied: "Acetaminophen codeine in pill form? This tablet is also known as Tylenol 3... Street prices depending on your area will go from $3 - $5 a pill... Be careful selling this is a controlled substance and in many ares considered a felony."

phantomlimb7 replied: "I think it's 5-20 years in a prison for narcotics dealing. Not a medicine question."

j m replied: "The hospital makes a huge profit off the medication to make of for their cost. When you go to a bar and buy a beer for $5 dollars you think to yourself you could go get a whole six pack for this price, but the bar owner is adding in his cost (electricity, building cost, his worker, etc.) There is one way to cut medical spending by 1/3, but the Lawyers will never let it happen. ELIMINATE LAWSUITS, malpractice cuts into about 1/2 of a physicians operating cost. So when you go to see the doctor 1/2 of your bill is his malpractice. When someone sues a doctor ( win or lose) the doctor must increase his cost to make up for the lawsuit. So your cost to see the doctor goes up. Which means you pay for other people to sue the doctor and it looks like insurance or the doctor is getting stuck with the bill, but it is really us."

Is it safe to mix (co -codamol (30mg codeine phosphate and 500mg paracetamol)) with 400mg Ibuprofen? Is it safe to mix (co -codamol (30mg codeine phosphate and 500mg paracetamol)) with 400mg Ibuprofen, at the same time but keeping to the reccommended daily doses. I know you can mix ibuprofen and paracetamol but what about the codeine mix? Thanks in Advance

Taylor replied: "Go ask a pharmacist, they have the answers."

Katiee replied: "You should ask a pharmacist because it is hard to judge. It could be dangerous so make sure that you ask someone who has knowledge in this area before trying it."

danieldresen replied: "It depends on your body chemistry and what other meds you may be on. I have been on that combination though for recovery of a tonsilectomy."

daddyrx replied: "You can take them together if you want. But it would be better if you alternate between the two every 4 hours."

Question about Codeine Phosphate overdosing? I am studying human biology at College, and have chose to write about the effects of certain potentially addictive legal drugs such as morphine. I cannot, however, find out how long it would take the average person to die if given a lethal dose of Codeine Phosphate (I have found out that the toxic dose is 240 mg (8 capsules); lethal dose 0.5-1 g - if this is wrong, please correct me) I have looked everywhere! Can anyone help? Thanks.

c k replied: "Right, there are no studies to determine how long it takes a person to die after taking a lethal dose. An overdose of codeine will cause a decrease in the respiration rate, once it reaches a critical level and the person develops hypoxia, death would occur in 30 to 60 minutes once cardiac arrest happens."
