This photo shows a WRTL MRL6 high
pressure sodium lantern on a metal column in King Street. These
lanterns replaced Thorn Alpha 9 90W SOX lanterns on these columns
in the 1990s in King Street and part of Lammas Street. The columns
in the western part of Lammas Street were replaced completely
with 'heritage' style columns and lanterns, and the Alpha 9s in
Blue Street were replaced slightly later with Philips SGS203 SON-T
lanterns.

More MRL6 lanterns, this time at
the entrance to St. Peters car park. This column is quite old,
as are the others in the car park (the others are identical to
this, but with only one bracket and lantern). Before these lanterns
were installed, this column used to house one Thorn Alpha 1 90W
SOX lantern and one Philips MA90 lantern. There was also another
Thorn Alpha 1 and several Eleco GR100 lanterns in the car park,
all now replaced by the MRL6 type.
In my opinion, it is a shame the Alpha 1s have disappeared, as
the nearest one is in Cardigan!

This deep bowl Thorn Alpha 9 on the

These Eleco GR100 90W SOX lanterns
in Barn Road were probably installed in the 1970s, and continue
into Francis Terrace and Richmond Terrace. They are obviously
good quality as there are hardly any replacements!

This photo shows the traffic lights
at Water Street, where it crosses St. Catherine Street. Water
Street, Fountain Hall Terrace and Lime Grove Avenue are all lit
by GEC Z9454 lanterns as seen on the right here. The MA90 with
gear on the left is a recent replacement.
St. Catherine Street, by contrast, is lit by high pressure sodium
lanterns, installed very recently. These replaced a mixture of
Eleco GR100s and Thorn Alpha 9s.

These lanterns light up the old bridge into town,
and were disconnected a long time ago and replaced by standard
lighting on high columns either side of the bridge. However, after
a lengthy campaign the lights were reconnected in the late 1980s
/ early 1990s. What is surprising is that although the reconnection
is relatively recent, they appear to be using mercury bulbs, rather
than high pressure sodium. I think when they were originally working
they were fitted with GLS bulbs.

This derelict installation has somehow survived
at the corner of Morley Street and St. Catherine Street, near
the centre of Carmarthen. I've no idea what the lantern is, but
it hasn't worked for years. It's the only one in the street -
the rest of the road was lit by Eleco GR100 SOX which have now
been converted to SON. The Elecos were fitted over 20 years ago
so they obviously forgot to take this pole down!
It doesn't look like a bulb is still fitted.

There are two large post-top lanterns in John
Street Car Park, Carmarthen. This picture shows one when lit.
Judging by the greenish colour, I'd say they were running mercury
vapour lamps (probably more than one).
