rusting lamp post

This old rusting column and lantern in Parade Road is a very early example of electric lighting in Carmarthen. There has been some debate about the identification of this lantern since the site was launched - Simon Cornwell has managed to identify it as an ESLA as shown on his website's ELSA page. Look for the 'Group B' two-way picture.

The council obviously have no plans to remove this at present as they have recently installed a cycle route sign on it!

Update: I was obviously wrong about the council's intentions in the paragraph above as this lantern and column were gone by October 2004, with the cycle route sign being relocated to the wooden power pole.

A close up of the base of the column, which does not appear to contain any control gear.

This Phosco P235 was photographed along The Esplanade, off Priory Street. This still works and is running mercury vapour. Thanks to Davy Warren for identification!

Update: this lantern was sadly replaced with a Philips 35W SOX sometime before February 2006.
