55W SOX Eleco GR501s were installed
on metal columns through Jobs Well Road and College Road in the
late 1970s or early 1980s. At the Jobs Well Road end, the installation
is completely intact today. Here is an unusual example with an
extremely short bracket.
The black and gold paintwork was applied in 2001 - previously
these were all painted mid-grey.
Update: This lantern was removed on 25th
November 2004 and replaced with a Philips MI36 on a Nedal conical
aluminium column slightly further up the road. The replacement
appears to be part of work to widen the pavement around the corner,
and so far no other columns have been replaced.

At the College Road end, several
columns and lanterns have been replaced, due to rust and vandalism.
This is an intact fitting illustrating the standard longer bracket.
In the background you can just about see a Philips MI 55W on a
'hockey stick' metal column - a 2001 replacement for a rusted
column. The Philips MI series has been the standard for 35W and
55W SOX fittings since about 1990 in Carmarthenshire, and the
first lantern replacement in Jobs Well Road took place in 1991.
Eleco GR501 lanterns can also be found in Cwmffrwd and Cwmgwilli.

In Glannant Road, a very similar
installation using GR501s with shorter brackets and different
photocells dates from the mid 1980s. Further up the street, Glannat
Road becomes College Road and there is a late 1980s installation
of Philips MI80a lanterns on identical columns to this with identical
photocells.

I thought I should include a photo
of a street light actually working somewhere on the site, as that
is their job!

This photo taken in 1991 shows a lantern in the
above installation in its original mid-grey paintwork. Prior to
this photo being taken, this lantern had lost at least one bowl
due to it's lose clips, and it had been in this "loose bowl"
state periodically since the mid-1980s.
The bowl smashed on the pavement shortly after this picture was
taken. After that, the lantern worked without a bowl for a while,
and a Philips MI36 was fitted later on in 1991 - the first casual
replacement in the whole installation.

Part of the bowl from the Eleco became the first
item in my collection back in 1991 - sadly I couldn't get the
whole lot because of the smash, and the other pieces were too
small to bother with. |
