Mercury in Aberystwyth

Although a conversion to high pressure sodium is well underway, there is still some main road mercury vapour lighting left in Aberystwyth.

This GEC turtle with mercury lamp was spotted down Bath Street. Although you can't see in this picture, replacement columns are in place, so I can't see these lasting much longer.

Update: I don't know about this particular lantern, but ones identical to this running mercury vapour were still in central Aberystwyth on 4th January 2005.

minor road mercury

The minor roads at the northern end of Aberystwyth are still completely lit by mercury vapour lighting, with a variety of different lanterns in use.

This is a Revo Prefect, with a different bowl to that near Llandybie.

Aberystwyth

A close-up of the Revo Prefect lantern. When I arrived in Aberystwyth, this was still lit, but unfortunately it switched off before I could get a picture!

Another mercury lantern in Aberystwyth. This is a Phosco P235 (thanks to Davy Warren for identification!).

Post-top lighting is installed at the north end of Queens Road. This is a Thorn Gamma 5.

Another post top lantern - this one's at the very end of Queen's Road, at the junction with Cliff Terrace. This is a GEC Z5680.

Aberystwyth

A large 'heritage' SON installation is installed along the sea front at Aberystwyth. These were photographed along Victoria Terrace.

The lanterns are Urbis 'Victorian Saturn' - the brackets are Urbis 'Cascade Scroll' and the columns are also an Urbis design.

Post Top lantern

Concrete columns with post-top lanterns are still fairly common in residential parts of Aberystwyth. I think this Eleco HW series lantern is using a mercury vapour lamp.

Eleco cut-off lantern

An Eleco GR151 cut-off lantern in Llanbadarn Fawr, just outside Aberystwyth. The Aberystwyth outskirts are still lit by 135W SOX, mainly GR150s and the odd Z9554. There are a few GR151s around which were probably installed with the GR150s in areas requiring cut-off lighting, such as this one next to a level crossing.

Here's a close up of the GR151.

Eleco cut-off lantern

This view from the side clearly shows the difference in shape between the GR150 and the GR151. The GR151 (here) has a bowl which flares outward towards the base, keeping the light distribution "cut-off" underneath the lantern. The GR150 tapers in towards the base distributing the light further along the road ("semi cut-off").

Eleco GR150s

Facing towards Aberystwyth from the level crossing at Llanbadarn Fawr, this photograph shows a couple of GR150s.

REVO Prefect

Two top entry REVO Prefects on concrete columns are installed by a public footpath and play area next to the level crossing at Llanbadarn Fawr. They're not in great condition and may no longer work.

The Eleco GR151 shown above lights the road in the background, and is located just outside the left of this picture.

REVO Prefect

The first Prefect still has a bowl, but it is very dirty and has several holes.

REVO Prefect

The second Prefect no longer has a bowl, and it's canopy is covered in bird waste! It still has a lamp (mercury vapour).

Here's the lantern above shown from a distance, showing it's surroundings. The lanterns in the far background, behind the houses, are Philips MA50s lighting a major road.
