Pangolin replied: "There are people who are sensitive to latex, and those who are allergic. You sound like you are allergic.
(My questions for latex sensitive people revolve around balloons and underwear, which typically has latex in the elastic)
Anaphylaxis is a little more of a reaction than what you described. It involves a lot of swelling, wheezing, breathing problems and many times, death. That's not to say that your reaction isn't concerning - it is.
You need to go to an allergist and have the proper allergy testing done. You may also need to find a new line of work that doesn't involve exposure to latex. Most medical products are now latex-free, but there are still things that contain latex that you might not think about - blood pressure cuff tubing, stoppers in medication vials, things like that.
Your health and safety are at stake here, and it is YOUR responsibility to get yourself the proper care, which includes avoiding latex.
So, find yourself an allergist and take it from there. Good luck."
Penny P replied: "So, an anaphylactic shock would be a reaction where you have reactive swelling that obstructs your airways and then some.....it doesn't sound like you had that, but you definately had a severe reaction to latex. You should get an epi pen for when you have accidental exposure to latex. I'm surprised your MD didn't give you one. This exposure certainly sounds bad, but the next one could be worse, and your airway could become obstructed. You never know when an allergy is going to take off like that. I have heard that latex allergies can be progressive like that. It is for that reason that alot of hospitals are doing away with latex all together. (for instance, the hospital where I work has virtually no latex products anymore, and actually forbids latex balloons) If your doctor doesn't find this serious, I would get a different doc. Seriously. I would not mess around with this. If you can get a different job with less chance of exposure, that would be a good thing too."
