Itching, flaking, tingling scalp with dandruff and redness and hair fall? I've heard this can be a sign of male pattern baldness setting in? I'm very concerned because I'm only 18 and it does run on my father's side of the family. I'm very uncomfortable with a very itchy and flaky red scalp. I occasionally experience some tingling and severe itchiness and pain. There's also a bit of hair fall especially in the shower. Is there a chance this is just natural hair loss and baldness setting in? I plan on going to the dermatologist soon but it does cause me to worry.

blwydeven replied: "Could be many things, even something like a fungus. Which can be cured with lotramin. I would consult you doctor and for now try some selsome blue for the itching. Can also be a condition known as seborrhea. It acts up more in times of stress."

Rica 82 replied: "Buy Head & Shoulders for the flaking, itching, and dandruff. Shampoo 2x/when you shampoo. Avoid scratching your head as you may be increasing the chances of going bald quicker. Go to your local CVS/Walgreens or whatever you have near you, and buy a balding shampoo or treatment. Every place has one. And I'm not talking about Rogaine. You might have to buy horse shampoo.....not really for horses...but it makes your hair thick so that it doesn't bald. Or you might want to try hair vitamins.....to make your hair thicker."

Sharon W replied: "you do need to see the doctor. Meantime try a good medicated shampoo. They cost a bit but they might help with the itching and flaking. They stink.. but if it helps the smell wont last after its dried . And if you are going to lose your hair thats up to nature and not much you can do to stop it but you can slow it up by not over abusing your hair. Dont ware a hat unless needed. and comb/brush your hair with care..no need to ramrod a comb throught it. My son is 19 and has a similar problem so he keeps his hair buzzed cut and went from washing it everyday to like every 2 to 3 days. Also diffrent times a year you normally shed hair too. Like I told my son .. if it gets to bad.. shave it all off ..Bald is very sexy these days."

wrong place wrong time replied: "Well this is a cause to worry,I do suggest you see a doctor. In the mean time try selsumblue shampoo and get you some sulfur 8 scalp condition most people think it is only for African Americans but it is not.For everyone who reads these answers just because a pruduct is sold in a different section do not deprive yourself nor you hair from these products they do work and they are good for your hair.I am caucasion and I use these products hair color, shampoo, conditioners etc.I have over the years did so much to my hair and I dont limit myslelf to the many products out there and my hair is the strongest, thickest and healthiest its ever been.Try the product and let me know how it works not sure of nationality it doesnt matter because they will work for you."

Nissa replied: "it could be anything , like the shampoo your using you could be allergic who knows? Try Head n shoulders! and Quit scratching your head your just making things WORSE"

hairbob replied: "how often do you shampoo your hair, at eighteen you should be shampooing your hair everyday. and if your hair still flakes do two soapings.we all lose between 40 and 80 hairs every day. a new hair grows in it's place.do go to a dermatologist. to check about the redness."

shick replied: "please do see a dermi asap. also ask for a blood test includ thyroid, hormones and iron studies. you inheirt your mothers genes in terms of hairline. so if your fathers bald your safe. in regards to the ithciness and redness invest in a good shampoo sold by hairdressers eg: biolage. and do see a specialist right away."

Cellophane replied: "Wash your hair more often and try applying a hot oil treatment to the scalp, wash and condition... if it doesn't clear up by a week and a half see a dermatologist."

Natural replied: "check the links below for natural homemade beauty tips to:-- Dandruff"

Sweet_Release replied: "an itchy and flaky scalp may be a sign of a sensitive scalp.. which means you need to change to a shampoo which suits your scalp and hair type.. if a sensitive scalp is not treated, it can also lead to hair loss in the long run.. there can be many underlying reasons such as hormones, diet, vitamin deficiency.. i'm sure a doctor would be better able to assess your problem.."

Difficulty breathing and chest tightness? I have been having problems with chest tightness, difficulty breathing, shaking/trembling,strange headaches with tingling scalp and/or throbbing. Also hair loss, bruising, and ear pain, though I believe these are unrelated to the first. I have been diagnosed with asthma and have inhaler, but it is not helping. Does anyone have any suggestions?

James r replied: "SEE A DOCTOR."

bubba replied: "You definitely need to see a doctor. I t could be a number of things. Info all an inhaler is: is a crutch. Get out and get active. I know I am on an inhaler also. It is a crutch. It prvoides a temporary ease of breathing. good luck."

question about hair loss? I am a 19 year old girl and ive always had thick hair. Over the past month i have lost alot of hair and have patches of thin spots around the sides and top front, my hair has also thinned out all over and doesnt seem to stop. I also have itchy/sore/tingling feeling assosiated with it. I went to see my dermatologist but he couldnt see anything wrong with my scalp. Im still losing more hair than usual but cant find a cause and its frustrating!

threedrainer replied: "Move! you probably live by a toxic chemical plant or a military operation of some sort. It's making your hair fall out and probably making you barren."

Candace replied: "are you stressed out over something? try relaxing a bit, stress can cause your hair to fall out."

Arabic chick replied: "use olive oil. put some in your hand and message your scalp, then sit in the sun or put a hair cap and blow dry it for a couple of minutes. then wash your hair. its supposed to make your hair stronger."

momrocks replied: "some times if you are stressed or if you are taking any contraceptive pill and changed of brand it can affect your hormones. I would definitively see my doctor, this might be linked to a health problem."

MEL B replied: "My daughter just noticed the same thing going on with her hair-thinning on the sides! She believes it's due to stress. She works in a Dr's office(stressful!) has 3 small children (stressful!) and is always worried about finances! I think it will hard for her to change her lifestyle-but she will have to learn to take more time for herself and take more vitamins. I would suggest to you that you try another Dr. or 2 till someone can help you. Good luck!"

Michael D replied: "Go see an endocrinologist. That was the first symptom my step-daughter had of hypothyroidism and it's common with all thyroid disorders."

What is wrong with me? Hypothyroidism? Pituitary hypothyroidism? Hashimoto's? Leukemia? ? I'm 19, about 5 feet tall, 116 lbs. African-American. History: Most of the symptoms I have I've had for years, but being raised in a family that pushed me to “just deal with it” whenever I complained about feeling sick Iwas forced to push myself. I'm in a much better situation, but since I've been here my health has consistently been declining and I've developed anxitey which keeps getting worse. Life before this year was pretty close to unbearably stressful including freuqent sporadic bouts of homelessness all throughout my life as well as other traumatic events. I thought maybe it could be ptsd or GAD, but the anxitey just began now that I'm removed from the stressful situation and placed into a stable one, same with my body pretty much breaking down. Through-out my developmental years I abused a variety of pills (Been clean for awhile.) as well as ingesting mass amounts of soy (vegetarian for eight years) and starting birth control at 14. Family has a history of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, addiction. Possibly a history of hypothyroid, but only one family member is officially diagnosed ,four people total with parallel symptoms though. Symptoms including, but not limited to: Dry, brittle hair & scalp, hair loss, dry skin, several different kinds of recurring headaches (center of head between ears mostly), weight flucuations ,Hirsutism, irregular periods, infertility, acne, visual disturbances (three dots in a triangular formation), bleeding gums, tooth decay, sporadic dizziness, loss of motor control, slurred speech, fevers (past 2 month), menstrual irregularities, infertility, sinuses hurt constantly throughout ears and face, several serious sinus infections over the years, "lump stuck in throat” feeling, swelling under her chin sometimes, heartburn, stabbing chest pains (really painful almost incapacitating), heart palpitations, back & shoulder pain (excruciating, chronic), trouble digesting food, no appetite, possible gall bladder problems, daily nausea, muscle weakness, joint pain, chronic yeast infections over the years (generally very prone to infection), "tingling" in limbs kind of like they fell asleep but more intense of a pins & needles feeling, lack of energy, shortness of breath., lump on her arm about a centimeter or so high, what feels like carpal tunnel, insomnia, serious anxiety. Temperature. is very low in the morning and high at night. She's extremely sensitive to cold, sensitive to light(sometimes it causes her to vomit or pass out) We're worried that the ranges of normality might be off considering she's a pretty tiny person and i guess wouldn't have the same range of normality as someone who is of average height and weight or someone that hasn't been on birth control on and off since they were 14 Theories have been put forth that it could be either depression in general (it absolutely isn't), 1.pituitary or secondary hypothyroid, 2.Adrenal failure originating in the pituitary gland( due to what seems like bouncing between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid) 3. Leukemia (due to her wbc being on the high end and her rbc being on the low end) or some Autoimmune disease (due to her lymphocyte count being on the high end and her monocyte count being on the low end) Doctors are just pretty much refusing to listen to her tell them her symptoms or perform tests, especially if they know her history. Or they tell her it's anxiety or depression because her results are “within range”. Here are a lot of test results, if you can make any sense out of them I'd really appreciate it: BUN/Creatinine Ratio 13 Alkaline Phosphatase, S 48 (IU/L) LDH 115 (IU/L) AST (SGOT) 15 (IU/L) ALT (SGPT) 14 (IU/L) pH 6.0 Free T4 1.28 (ng/dL) TSH 1.051 (uIU/mL) Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Ab <10 (IU/mL) free t3 3.3 (pg/mL) antithyroglobulin ab siemens (DPC) ICMA Method <20 IU/ML --40 WBC 8.6 (x10E3/uL) RBC 4.13 (x10E6/uL) Hemoglobin 12.3 (g/dL) Hematocrit 36.2 (%) RDW 12.7 (%) Platelets 344 (x10E3/uL) Neutrophils 46 (%) Lymphs 49 (%) Monocytes 4 (%) Eos 1 (%) Basos 0 (%) Neutrophils (Absolute) 4.0 (x10E3/uL) Lymphs (Absolute) 4.2 (x10E3/uL) Monocytes (Absolute) 0.3 (x10E3/uL) Eos (Absolute) 0.1 (x10E3/uL) Baso (Absolute) 0.0 I forgot to clarify a few things. The tooth decay is recent, most of the enamel on my teeth is gone. I don't have insurance at all. I can't work and I can't go to school. And I'm no longer a vegetarian as of one year ago. Also, I've been all over the vitamins situation. All kinds of D, B, B12, A and some other multi as well as iron supplements.

Adam L replied: "The biggest thing I can see that's off is your blood pH. This is called metabolic acidosis. This could explain some of your symptoms. There is definitely something more going on there, though."

A Canadian replied: "Your blood work looks essentially normal but take it from some one who suffers with hypothyroidism...the blood work doesn't mean a thing sometimes..it does sound like you have a goiter and a good number of the symptoms you describe are classic of hypo. I would also urge you to get tested fro PCOS...you fit that description also."

Katherine W replied: "You have symptoms that wouldn't be explained just by low thyroid. You need a complete workup by a competent team of doctors. If your current doctors are not taking your symptoms seriously, you need to find a new doctor who will help you. I'm especially concerned about your slurred speech. I think you should get treatment for the things you know about, as it seems you have multiple things going on. I would start with an anti-anxiety medication: it could be that your doctors are ignoring your symptoms because of the way you present them, and by taking some anti-anxiety medication, you might be able to speak with less anxiety and therefore present your problems in a way that they're more likely to take seriously. At the least, if you're on anti-anxiety medication, they can't just dismiss everything as 'anxiety.' Next, I'd get your dental problems treated. When you have infections around the gums, it can impact your whole health. You should get cavities filled, and begin flossing and general tooth care. If you have problems affording this, there are dental clinics and you can also go to a dental school and have students work on you supervised by professors of dentistry. I suspect you also might need some nutritional help. Vegetarianism can be good for you, but you have to know how to get sufficient protein by combining foods, and a lot of people don't do that. Even if you are no longer vegetarian, you may have depleted your body of some minerals and B vitamins. A good nutritionist or dietician can help. You should also see an eye doctor about those visual irregularities. It might be something that's easy to explain, or they may be able to look at your retina and see if something else is showing up (diabetes shows up in the eyes, for example). I think you should also consider some alternative therapies. I'd see a chirorpractor about all of this -- they will take a long history and see if they can recommend anything, and at the least they can work on the tingling numbness you're getting. Also, and I don't have experience in this, but I've heard that accupuncture and accupressure can deal with things that western medicine can't seem to do, and they've had definite results with things like infertility, I believe. I know this is a lot. Perhaps you can pick one thing and just do that, and see if you get results, and then keep going. I wish you luck!"

mimuful replied: "Hello...your test results mean nothing to us if you don't include the lab ranges. Thats because every lab has a different method of testing and have different ranges. So I am unsure what is low or high. I have a pituitary condition AND Hashimotos. Before I was able to find a Dr. that would listen, I had many of the symptoms you describe and was told I was just depressed. I found a good Dr. that realized I might have the 2 conditions and combined they were making some of the lab results look normal (one condition was pulling them down, the other up). And he said "OF course your depressed, your very sick!" Why isn't IGF 1 including in your test results? Thats a very important test to determine pituitary functioning. All your symptoms point to a pituitary problem. You need to find a good Endocrinologist who specializes in pituitary disorders. Go to and look through Dr. listings. I'm not sure what you should do about the financial issue but maybe someone can help you out."

Mum Mum replied: "Simple , your a hypochondriac, and you definitely need help. See your doctor,or maybe you already do too much."

shortaphrodite replied: "Well, you could have hypothyroidism although ur blood tests seem ok. Diabetes is something else to consider. It does sound like there are some anxiety and depressive issues there and you would be amazed at what that can do to the boddy! It does sound like you could have some sort or a combination of auto immune disorders. Keep on at the dr's until they get it right. Don't give up!"

texasthyroid replied: "I would ask for a serum ferritin test. Anemia often shows up in the ferritin (storage iron) before it is apparent in other iron tests. With your hemoglobin slightly below range, your hematocrit at the bottom of its range, and your history of vegetarianism, I would suspect that many of your symptoms are due to anemia. If you were a vegetarian for very long, you may have lost your ability to digest meat. I would add that soy binds thyroid hormone and prevents it from being absorbed into your cells. If you still eat any soy at all, you can be hypothyroid on the tissue level, even though your blood levels look OK. The lump in the throat might be a thyroid nodule, which should be watched with ultrasound imaging."

ETS surgery hyperhidrosis? I have had surgery to correct hyperhidrosis and have strange scalp sensations such as tingling, burning and hair loss. I am wondering if anybody else who has had this operation is experiencing any similar symptoms

Vahid replied: "Side effects, such as fatigue, hair loss, loss of concentration, scalp itchiness, weight gain, shortness of breath, reduction of exercise ability are not appearing in a significant number of patients. Not every side effect could be related definitely to the sympathectomy but overall those kind of side effects were mentioned by patients in the past. At times, it is difficult to answer patients with regards to those complaints without knowing the initial indication for the ETS or the method in which it was performed. I recommend you taking antihistamine."

Need to know what's wrong with me? Ok. This year has been an interesting time for my health. For the past year (until 2 months ago) I have been taking numerous antibiotics. Doxycyline for one, for a whole month in treatment for Staph/impetigo on my face. Afterward I started experiencing redness and scaling on my cheeks. Going to the doc again, I was diagnosed with Seborrheic Dermatitis. I learned that this could be caused by Candida, after prolonged use of antibiotics/destroying the immune system. So I started taking probiotics, instantly working, until after 10 days of using them I experienced intense scalp pain and some hair loss. Nothing is noticeable, but I stopped taking them and noticed none afterward. However, I have been more than a week off of it and yet I'm still experiencing this hair loss. The real issue here: Much to my dismay I am also getting prickling and tingling sensations in my feet and hands whenever I eat something that contains sugar. Other symptoms are: -Low energy -Feeling sick -headaches -weight loss while still eating normally. -The tingling/and numbness in my hands and feet/legs -Muscle aches I would really appreciate any helpful replies here. It's nice to know so many "CARING" people are out there.

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Perhaps diabetes might be a possibility."

CAN YOUR WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT NOT SHOW SIGNS OF INFECTION? SOMEONE ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME im seeing dr tom so hopefully some news(GOOD OR BAD AT THIS POINT IS GOOD TO ME!)

Corinne replied: "many of those symptoms lead to HIV, and it is not uncommon to have a negative test result when you are actually HIV positive. get retested.. but overall sounds like you just named everything you could think of. -vaginal discharge: normal -skin tags: normal -sores: possible STD - bump on cervix: might actually be the cervix, if you gyno can't see it, im sure it's fine - etc.. start thinking about what's changed recently versus worrying so much about the little things. that's what confuses doctors, when you talk about 100 different things when really the worst symptom is the cause of everything else your thyroid problem is most likely causing your lymph nodes to be swollen, as well as most of the symptoms above as for the acne.. it is stress induced.. and you seem to be very stressed. i suggest stop taking so much medications, consult more doctors until you're satisfied, they know what your blood work reveals, not us"

Spots on a CAT scan of the brain? My mother in law recently went to the hospital complaining of shivers, headaches, hairloss, and the left side of her body - scalp to toes - were tingling. She finally got a CAT scan done and the doctor said there were spots on her brain in the images. Blood tests all came back negative for anything and they can't find anything wrong with her pretty much at all. About 2 days before being admitted, she stopped taking her medication completely. Meds for pain, anxiety, panic attack, etc. because she thought those were what was causing her hair loss. Apparently she didn't think to ask the doctor what the spots meant. Does anyone have any ideas? They want to do a spinal tap on her and see what that shows. Also to test for MS.

www.myspace.com/1real1genuineguy replied: "She could be having hairline bleeds from tiny aneurysms that are breaking , She could have possible something more serious like Central Nervous system Cancer or possibly a brain cancer She could have the start of Alzheimer's disease which is putting tiny deposits of plaque on her brain or maybe dementia , these symptoms can go a long time before a diagnosis is made , Also Picks disease is similar to Alzheimer's disease symptoms"

Prince§§ of µnί©orn waΨ replied: "My mother had those tests done for the same reason. She has several spots about the size of walnuts. They diagnosed her with MS. She had been having mini strokes called T.I.A.'s That caused her to have headaches, and numbness and tingling. Now, she has had so many that they have begun to affect her memory. I don't leave my child alone with her anymore because she forgot her once and left her at a car dealership. She forgets which side is hot and which is cold on the faucet. She was very upset about the eventual downturn to her physical abilities. She has a friend that was diagnosed 3 years ago who is now unable to walk and has extremely limited vision. She no longer has that fear since she has had an additional condition that means she won't be around long enough to experience those effects. She is actually okay about that, because she has always been a very independent and very active person who reads constantly. I am not saying that is what is wrong with your mother in law, I couldn't know that. I just wanted to warn you about the scary part of the diagnosis so you will be prepared for it if that is what is actually wrong. She will need lots of love and support in that situation. It is a very scary thought. I cannot imagine how I would react if someone told me I would eventually be unable to walk, read, or even talk! I would suggest that you not let her look too much into the disease until she gets her diagnosis, my mom was terrified by the time she got her diagnosis. She was making herself sick as she studied about it. I hope it is a pinched nerve, and that she will be fine! I will keep my fingers crossed that she is just having a bad reaction to her shampoo or something lol!."
