First-half goals from Jody Craddock and Kevin Kilbane saw Sunderland beat Vitesse Arnhem 2-1 in the Gelredome this evening.
Craddock fired Peter Reid's side ahead on the quarter of an hour mark as he drove past Zoetebier in the opening game of The Black Cats' two-match tour of Holland.
The Dutch keeper was beaten again seven minutes later when Kevin Phillips' cross was headed home by Kevin Kilbane.
Peeters pulled a goal back for the home side eight minutes after the break, before Kilbane went close to another goal with a header just over the bar.
Sunderland were forced to hang on in the closing minutes, with McCartney heading off the line late on to ensure that Reid's side continued their impressive pre-season form ahead of Saturday's clash with Den Haag.
Sunderland started the game with the following line-up : Sorensen, Haas, Craddock, McCartney, Gray, Kilbane, McCann, Schwarz, Arca, Phillips and Laslandes.
