Fire Brigades Union

This is your FBU pages,

THE IMMEDIATE AIMS of the Fire Brigades Union are to serve it's members by winning for them the best possible conditions, and to serve the community by encouraging its members to be skilled at their craft.
THE FIRE BRIGADES UNION recognises that workers, however employed, can only improve their lot by their own endeavours and organisation. A richer and fuller life can be achieved only by similar means.
TO THIS END the Fire Brigades Union is part of the working-class movement and, linking itself with the international trade union and labour movement, has as it's ultimate aim the bringing about of the socialist system of society.
IF YOU NEED TO TALK to the Union please in the first instance contact your Union Rep at station 46 Hereford or fill in the form below...

FIREFIGHTERS DEMAND £30,000

Delegates attending the Annual Conference of the Fire Brigades Union, in Bridlington today, voted unanimously to pursue an increase in wages to take the pay of Professional Firefighters and Emergency Fire Control Staff to £30,000 with a new formula to maintain this rate for the future.

Currently, The Fire Service pay is determined by a formula which has kept industrial peace since 1977. The current formula was agreed following the only ever national strike in the British Fire Service. The formula has not maintained Fire Service wages in line with other workers. Also, the Professional Firefighter's job has changed immensely since the 70s. Firefighters and Emergency Fire Control staff from all over the country have unanimously backed a call for a Professional wage for the Professional job they now do.

The pay claim will be formally made to the National Fire Service Employers on the 28th May 2002.

During the debate, Andy Gilchrist General Secretary of the Fire Brigades Union said: "We last raised the issue of pay in the Fire Service 25 years' ago, no-one could call us impatient." He went on to stress the FBU's commitment to securing an agreement through negotiation, saying, "WE DO NOT SEEK CONFRONTATION but if we are forced to, and I emphasise FORCED, then yes, we will recall the FBU Conference and yes, regrettably, we will recommend strike action."
