 A Brief History of Soroptimism

Home Page

In 1921 a classification club for women was founded by Stuart Morrow (a  professional organiser of men’s service clubs) in Oakland, California following his visit to a secretarial college where, to his surprise he found at its head a woman.   She suggested that instead of concentrating on Clubs for men he should consider inaugurating Clubs for women also.

In May 1920 the first Venture Club had been founded for women in Bristol following an initiative of the Rotary Club of Bristol, it therefore celebrated its eightieth anniversary in the year 2000.

In 1930 the two organisations with the same ideals formally amalgamated and took the name Soroptimist  (loosely translated as “the best of sisters”) but with the motto of the first Venture Club Looking Further.

The world is divided into 4 Soroptimist Federations:

 The Americas

Europe

Great Britain and Ireland

The South West Pacific

The Soroptimist International movement is growing and there are now

just over 97,000 members in more than 3,000 Clubs

in 126 countries of the world

A Soroptimist may attend meetings of any other Club - anywhere in the world -

and is always certain of a welcome (or assistance) wherever she is.
