Leysdown
<-- This picture was taken in January!
Leysdown is situated at the far end of the
island, near Eastchurch. The two places are approximately the same size,
but are very different to each other. Leysdown is home to all but two of the island's holiday parks,
(with one being in Halfway and the other in Eastchurch). In the summer
months, the population of Sheppey is doubled to 60,000 because of the
holiday-makers, mostly from London. Leysdown is the most popular of the
places to stay because of the number of parks to choose from, and also
because of its award winning beaches and the Promenade full of amusement
arcades and places to eat.
Eastchurch
Eastchurch is a little village situated after Minster but before
Leysdown. Eastchurch has a major claim to fame - it is where C.S.Rolls
(One half of the Rolls-Royce car manufacturer) and Sir Winston Churchill
both learned to fly at the Eastchurch Aerodrome. Nowadays, the aerodrome
itself is three prisons (Elmley, Swaleside and Stanford Hill). The
church in Eastchurch was built in 1431 which makes it the second oldest
building on the island. |
