Imitrex Nasal Information in Questions
What are the side effects of IMITREX nasal spray for migraines? Is there drowsiness?

Chas replied: "Click on the blue link"

smartsassysabrina replied: "Some people say drowsiness but I've done the nasal spray, pills, and injections and never had it. I've found that I had neck and throat pain, and burning from the nasal spray. With the injectable I got a metallic taste in the mouth, which is very strong and I can see it causing nausea in someone not used to it. Often when I get migraines I also take a phenergan pill which causes drowsiness."

junie101278 replied: "no drowsiness, but my husband takes it and it can burn pretty bad for the 1st few min. but, it is safer than the injections, if you have more ?'s plz feel free to email me from my profile and I or my husband can answer any of your concerns, he has very bad cluster headaches and has been on them for years."

Susan Yarrawonga replied: "Perhaps you could investigate a web search for magnesium + migraines. Magnesium in some cases could act as a laxative but this usually requires large amounts."

I am currently takng the Imitrex nasal spray and it leaves a bitter aftertaste in my mouth? Does anyone know how to quickly get rid of this horrible aftertaste? I tried gum and drinking a lot of fluids. The only thing that somewhat works is laying down, but sometimes this isn't an option for me

Nicko replied: "try a netipot."

bandtime35 replied: "try spraing one time in each nose once"

My son is starting to use imitrex nasal spray. 5 mg. I think he is confused on the amounts ? i think he is thinking it is 1 spray unit for each nostrile. I'm thinking that one "spray unit" is for both nostrils. Am i wrong and confused? He said he paid 118.00 for a box of 6 units.

J B replied: "It is one spray, one nostril - otherwise, he is double dosing himself. To make sure, call the pharmacist that dispensed the medication and they can clear this up."

Sara V replied: "You're right. The directions are a SINGLE spray in ONE nostril, not one per nostril. If no response it can be repeated in 2 hours."

TweetyBird replied: "Well there's no dosing schedule because it's used as needed. The nasal formula comes in 5mg and 20mg strengths. For your son, a single dose is 5mg (1 unit) and you're both wrong. The usual dose is a single spray in one nostril. And yes, it comes in a box with 6 units. Something's not right. I think "JB" is pretending to be a health care provider. I base this on questions asked and answers given. They don't ring true and I AM a licensed health care provider."

me replied: "Sorry TweetyBird but my prescription says one spray PER nostril for headache and im pretty sure i have two nostrils so that would be 2 sprays. So your wrong and maybe your response doesnt ring true."

What do you think they best way to get rid of a migraine? I am 16 and I have been getting migranes since I was about 6. I got to the point where if I take asprins, one or two doesn't work. I take three or four. I know that is not healthy and I have been looking for other alternatives. I began taking vicodin, but it still doesn't help much. I have Imitrex nasal spray that seems to work about 50% of the time. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to get rid of them?

NeO Anderson replied: "exedrin will really rock ur world ok alsoo couse u seem cute check this out read it, understand it, then falow all instructions for a cure "

pamela_d_99 replied: "Imitrex injections maybe. I had them bad when I was a teenager, but then for some reason, now I only get them about 1 or 2 times a wear."

UrBaN HymNs replied: "Drink CoFFEE..."

♥kistin14♥ replied: "Exerdin migrane. Really works well."

Dudeee replied: "Drink coke with panadol(parasatamol) added in it"

Cathy L replied: "Excedrin Migraine works wonders!!! You have to try it!!! My best friends gets them and she takes all kinds of weird meds..and they dont work..she really has to sleep them off.. I told her to use this and it works.."

Musicman replied: "Take notes, what were you doing before the Migraine hit? There are a variety of things that can trigger migraines, sounds, lights, foods, stress and so on. For me it's a certain frequency of light. I'll catch a reflection just right and I get the aura coming on. If I take my Imitrex inhaler right then, it dulls the pain enough to be bearable. Good Luck."

Admin@GunzCoty.com replied: "Gatorade I'm telling you it works for most people just drink a glass of it i mean down the whole glass within in 15 mins. it should work."

gerbilisimo replied: "You should try 'Imigran' made by Glaxo. It is frickin' expensive, but the only thing that actually works for me. The way I see it, is that when I am having one, I would pay just about anything to get rid of it! I wouldn't wish them on anyone...well perhaps a couple of people. Get you doc to perscribe it, I'm not sure if it is available over the counter"

Loyc replied: "Rest your head on the side that hurts or put your face down on the pillow and think on something that makes you happy or feel good. :-)"

Cherokee replied: "I take percocet 10 and xanax and tylenol, but what works best for me is an icepack on the back of my neck[which is where my migraines usually are]and than alternate with a heating pad.Good luck to you,I am 47 and mine started when i got my periods.now I am going through menopause and have a migraine almost every day.p.s.The xanax helps me because it relaxes me.p.s.do this in the dark with no noise except maybe a rain machine type thing."

Dr. Neema replied: "Imitrex is one of the best prescriptions on the market for migraines. Now the question is, do you know what your triggers are? First, you've gotta stay away from whatever tends to trigger your migraines. Also, the best known way to alleviate a migraine that has already begun is caffeine. The cause of migraines is the swelling of blood vessels in the brain, and the insuing pressure causes the headache. So what happens is that the caffeine causes the opposite effect. That's actually what imitrex is....caffeine mixed with some pain killers. It's also the main ingredient in Excedrin Migraine. You might want to also look into the imitrex pen....some people say it works faster than the spray. Topamax can also be helpful to some patients."

perry_rhodan_2001 replied: "If possible lay down and relax in a darkened room and maybe have a meditation cd running (eg.sounds of nature) in the background. With some practise you will find that more helpful than the use of medication. It will also get you back in tune with your body and you will be able to recognize the causes and symptoms of a starting migraine which will enable you to avoid the full outbreak."

Heinz M replied: "Having had migraines for over 50 years, I know what you are going through. I feel for you. That said, we are all different and what works for one, does not necessarily work for someone else. Keeping that in mind, first you need to figure out what the cause for your migraines is. I was 36 before I realized they were sinus related. After that I went to my doctor and got a bunch of samples of decongestants, to determine which did the best job with the least side effects (drowsiness etc). I ended up using Rondec-T with either Vanquish or Excedrin (I usually only took one, as my system reacts very well to medication, so don't need much. And less is better, if it does the job). About 8 years ago I needed to take blood pressure meds (Norvasc) and as soon as I started on these, my migraines were gone. (At one point my doc wanted to switch me to a different med, but within a week my migraines were back. Had him switch at once). Where as before I would take 300 Excedrin in a year, I have used less than 200 total in the last 8 years (25 a year mostly for other pains). I have reduced my intake of Norvasc from the doctor prescribed 10mg/day, to 5mg every second day and it still works perfectly. The drawback of Norvasc is, that it makes you retain water, and you need a diuretic (HCTZ in my case) to counter that. Also, it effects the libido, but at the dose I am taking now, that is not a problem at all. I hope this info will help you. Check it out with your doctor of course. BTW, using a local prescription, I bought a lot of the Norvasc from Sri Lanka at 10 Cents on the Dollar versus what it costs here ($2.20 a 10mg pill) Hope this helps you!"

raven_ice_2002 replied: "I have migraines since I was little as well. Nothing really works for me. I usually take some Excedrin migraine and go to sleep. The Excedrin dulls the pain to a controllable level. It gives me enough time to get home and go to sleep. I have to have a dark room with no or soft music. I usually am sensitive to light, smells, touch, and sounds. I haven't been able to pinpoint the triggers but I suggest you try. I suggest sleeping them out or relaxing in a darkened room. If you are the social or busy person try Excedrin migraine. Eat healthily and get enough sleep."

Are the effects of seratonin receptor agonists like Imitrex similar to depression medications like SSRIs? This is kind of a logic question, prompted by my own curiosity. SRAs are used to treat migraine headaches. They do so by regulating/raising seratonin levels in the brain, which helps to relieve the migraine by promoting vasoconstriction of the dilated arteries that cause migraine pain. It looks like to me that the goal of the drug, increasing seratonin levels(usage) in certain parts of the brain, are very close to the the goals of depression medication. In my experience, I have had some pretty interesting effects on mood in the 12 or so hours after taking Imitrex (nasal spray). A few hours of unusual happiness/elation, then tiredness and sometimes mood swings. Really, isn't this what depression medications do, but for longer periods of time? Mostly elevation of mood, which would make a non-depressed person unusually happy. Also, do you think there is a risk for dependency? The elation is also disturbingly close to how a "high," is generally described, though less extreme.

champiampi replied: "SO the idea of imitrix is that it competes with serotonin which is shown to cause migranes. Even though imitrix is a agonist for the HT receptor it is a partial agonist, meaning that it activates HT receptors to a lesser degree and is competing with serotonin but elicits a milder effect, thus reducing migrane symptoms. So your not stimulating the serotonin receptor more, infact you are trying to minimize the effect of serotonin on its receptor which lead to migrane. This mode of action is similar to shantix (spelling?) which is an anti-smoking medication which is a nicotnic receptor agonist, but a partial agonist so it competes with nicotine for the same receptor but elicits a milder effect leading to less of a desired effect being achieved and thus quittiing. Now SSRI's would intensify a migrane since you are keeping more serotonin in the synapse which will bind to the receptor leading to more intense headaches. so to sum up, imitrex is really activating HT receptors to a lesser extent than serotonin which is a true agonist, so that migranes are not as intense. It competes with serotonin for the receptor to reduce symptoms."

yllmedstud replied: "Imitrex is indeed a full agonist but it is targeted only agains the 5-HT1 receptors. There are the receptors that result in the vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the large intracranial arteries. Migranes usually occur as a result of vasodilation of those vessels. However the receptors involved in the treatment of depression are the other types of receptors such as the 5-HT2 receptors. There is a certain level of cross reactivity but this is minimal."

Where can Imitrex be injected? Imitrex seems to be one of the most popular medications used for chronic migraines and I was wondering where is it injected? I know there's a nasal spray and the pill but I was wondering about the injection and where is it injected. And is there a difference in injecting site between the auto-injector and the syringe?

Bill P replied: "I did mine in the thigh. Just don't tighten up your thigh, leave it loose and shoot the devil out of yourself."

What medication for migraines helps you the most? Or what do you do when they attack that is effective? My doctor prescribed me IMITREX tablets and nasal spray before but they don't help me at all. The nasal spray made matters even WORSE because of the bitter taste that I kept getting after using it. The liquid in the spay kept running to my throat, so I stopped using it because the discomfort made my migraines even more intense. The tablets didn't do anything but made my head feel empty and heavy at the same time (does that make sense?), and I felt a little weird in my chest after using them. So I didn't bother to get a refill -- I don't want to risk having side effects for nothing (literally). I'm 20 years old (male), and have been having migraines since I was about 7 years old (1st grade). I have auras (lightnings) in my eyes which grow so huge I barely can see anything at times. I also feel dizzy which makes me extremely nauseous. The horrible pain happens right after the aura forms a huge lightning circle around my eye that goes away right behind it on either left or right side (it switches). The intense pain in my head starts to fade away after an average of 4 to 6 hours, or right after I vomit. Then my head starts to feel refreshed with a slight tension in my upper spine area, which itensifies when I bend or lift things. Any advice on how you treat YOUR migraines? Any medications that you know of that are MORE effective than IMITREX (Sumatriptan). Thanks in advance for you help! Migraines suck! =[

Gerry replied: "Most headaches are the bodies way of telling you that you need to drink more water- try this first. If you drink coffee or red bull cut it out for a few days and see what happens. Chemicals cause headaches also- (example when you drink beer it is not the beer that causes the hangover it is the chemicals and the dehidration that your body is suffering) someone told me this years ago and I didn't listen - one day I remembered and tried it and I don't get migranes any more"

Evil Devil replied: "Unfortunately, the Imitrex might be what's giving you the auras. Tell your doctor about this promptly. Certain antidepressants help can actually help with the pain, your doctor will know what ones. Other than that, and forgive my directness, just throw up, take some Excedrin, & go to sleep, if possible."

ana r replied: "I have had migraines years, first I stop all drinks w/ caffeine, when i feel a migraine coming I take a nap I do not waituntill they get so bad to take the medication, I do not like Imitrex but I take it when isnecessaryy, go to your Dr, and ask him for a new med, that you can take daily it helps to take preventive medicine,I know the feeling when you take the medication my brain feelsnumbm for 3 days and is ugly I can't even drive, good luck to you"

LadyLynn replied: "Migraines for men really do suck. I'm sure you know that you should try to sleep in a dark, quiet room. You need to see a doctor who specializes in migraines. You could call a pharmacist. They are so smart, kind, and helpful. But the best thing to do would be to see a psychiatrist. They go to school for an extra 4 years and when it comes to meds, they know things that no other doctor would come up with. Please trust me on this one. Bless you and good luck. Lynn :)"

Smart Nurse replied: "Long but worth the reading. The information below is often overlooked or missed by both patients and physicians. This is the best headache and Migraine info. Being a nurse with over 25 years experience, I have seen a lot of patients with various illnesses and disorders. Many headaches are caused from common everyday chemicals and fragranced products as well as VOC's in homes, schools and workplace. This is a growing problem for many people and most are not even aware that it exists as more and more chemicals are being introduced and used on a daily basis. Many people believe that because a product smells good or cleans well and it is on a store shelf that it is tested, approved and safe for use. Think again ! We are now seeing more and more children and adults with skin disorders, nausea, dizziness, nausea, Chronic Headaches, Sinusitis, Migraines, Asthma, Allergies, Hives, Chronic Hives, Eczema, sinus / respiratory illnesses and Hormone related disorders. I can not emphasize how important it is to educate yourself about the harm you may be doing to your health by using chemicals and fragranced products. If you or a loved one has symptoms of or suffers from chronic headaches, reproductive problems, Migraines, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus or Fibromyalgia, you need to read further and learn about the signs and symptoms of MCS - Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Most doctors will not inform you about this because patients as a whole like to walk out of a doctors office with a prescription for some magical medicine and they do not want to be told that their expensive new perfume or newly installed carpet may be the culprit. So, the doctor will give you medications and many of these meds either do not work or cause other health problems. Chemicals and fragranced products are often the root of many disorders and illnesses when it comes to your health. Many of the below mentioned items are common triggers to sinus, asthma, itching, headaches, Migraines and allergy problems amongst other health issues. Get rid of them and your immune and respiratory system will thank you and you will breathe easier. And, it is not only personal body or cleaning products causing havoc on your health….many people become ill after wearing brand new clothing, dry-cleaned clothes, installing new carpet, painting, buying a new mattress or after home renovations because of the Flame Retardants, Antimony, Benzenes, Formaldehydes, etc. used in these products. So the answer is NO, you are not imagining that 2 weeks after your home, office or classroom got renovated you started to become ill, get dizzy or have headaches. This is happening more and more these days and adults as well as children are becoming sicker and sicker. Unfortunately, too many doctors compound the problem by prescribing chemical medications to try to alleviate the symptoms of an already chemical overloaded body and they rarely tell the patient to eliminate the chemical offenders. How many times have I seen people in the grocery store with Bounce, Glade Plug-Ins and Febreeze in their shopping cart along with a bottle of Benadryl , Migraine Excedrin and a box of Allergy Tablets ? Why don't they make the connection? Keep in mind that your skin is the largest organ of your body and what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body. Then ... well... then it has to be filtered by your organs which are already working real hard. BIG NO-NO's ---- I would SERIOUSLY recommend removing all of the below from your living / working area. No Bounce or dryer sheets - these are VERY toxic No Febreeze - your pets will even thank you for this No Glade Plug-ins - VERY toxic No Scented candles No Scented Dish Detergents No Fragranced Products on Body, Hair or Clothing No Smoke No Newspapers and Magazines - The ink is a huge irritant. No Dander No Sprays No Sharpies (marker pens) New Cartpeting, mattresses, paint, contain toxins that can trigger severe respiratory disorders as well as headaches and Asthma flare-ups. And remember, it is NOT the smell it is the Chemicals that make up the smell. So, even if something is "Fragrance Free" these products often mask the smell with another chemical ! There are plenty of safe healthy products out there that work well and do not have added chemical fragrances. More and more workplaces & schools are implementing Fragrance Free policies and creating "Fragrance Free Zones"… why do you think this is? Make the connection, your lungs , immune system and your general health will thank you."

How do I cure the nausea caused by my migraine medication? I take Zomig for migraines and it makes me really sick. The stomach ache I get from the medicine is like a hungover feeling - like I'm hungry when I'm not and I feel like I'm going to throw up. I took Relpax before switching to Zomig because my doctor thought it might not make me sick, but both of them do. The only thing that doesn't make me sick is Imitrex Nasal Spray, but my insurance only covers 6 of those and I need to take 2 for my migraine to go away. Should I switch my migraine medication again or should I take something to help with the nausea, and if so what should I take?

Lily L replied: "There is generic Imitrex now, so it's probably not that expensive to go back to Imitrex. Also, imitrex comes in a whole bunch of doses. If you always take 2, you should ask for a higher dose. I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but I always get nausea from migraine meds as well. It doesn't sound as if mine is as severe as yours, but what always helps me is Dramamine!"

Migraine help? I take imitrex nasal spray for them and it works really good. It is awfull expensive though. Since I get around 6 a month the doctor wants to put me on Topomax. Has anyone had an experience with this. Does it really reduce the number of migraines you have. Also does anyone know of a cheaper migraine medicine to try? and how expensive is topomax. I have insurance bcbsil. Also, what kind of side effects can I expect from topamax I also take 25 mg of atenolol every day. The doctor had me go up to 2x's a day since it had helped before. It still hasn't helped. My blood pressure is very good. Otc's do not help with these migraines. The ones that do work, I have to take in too large of amounts.

Jessica B replied: "Topamax has worked really well for me and has a really good track record for reducing migraines in lots of people I've talked to and people in my family. You have to take it every day though, as a preventative medication and you still may occasionally get a migraine now and then, but where as I used to get 2 or 3 a month, after starting topamax I only got one maybe every other month or so, so it was a massive help. The side effects are different for everyone, but are usually not bad at all. One side effect that many people experience is weight loss, not because it alters your metabolism or anything, but it makes some things taste different to you. For instance, my sister can't drink sodas anymore because they just taste horrible to her. 2 sisters and my dad lost about 20 lbs since starting topamax, but unfortunately I didn't get any kind of side effect like that... O well. Since I write for a living, one effect I was warned about was that you can experience a mild drop in cognitive abilities (lots of 'tip-of-the-tongue' loss for words and such) and I definitely felt that so my dosage was dropped down a little and everything came back to me. Otherwise topamax is definitely worth trying. The pros absolutely outweigh the cons. It significantly reduced my migraine numbers and I feel functional again. I don't think there is a cheaper version of it available or anything quite like it out there, but if this ends up being the only medicine you need for migraines (even if it's a $35 or $50 copay) it's worth it to feel normal and function again and not have to pay 6+ times a month for imitrex (which for me eventually stopped working at all). Combine that with a generic pain medication for the few times when a migraine may break through, and you should be fine."
