About Luna Bars And Weight Loss in Q&A
are Kellog's smart start bars good for weight loss? I need a snack for after work, before my workout. I need something crunchy that will give me energy. Someone told me that Luna bars have ttoo many carbs and will put weight on me, plus they are little too expensive. I got the smart start bars for 2.00 per box(6 in the box). I am sensitive to carbs and I am pre diabetic as well as Hypothyroid. I try to keep my sugars to foods that are based on the glycemic index approach.

thefinalresult replied: "Yes"

Beautifuldisaster replied: "yes, also try special k protein bars"

shallowMadallow replied: "I imagine they are fine--weight loss depends on calories in vs. calories burned. I don't understand the statement about Luna bars having too many carbs and that will cause you to gain weight--eating too many calories is what will cause you to gain weight."

LUNA bars? Are LUNA bars good for overall healthy? What about weight loss? They have 180 calories. Is that high or low? for information. Help please! I usually have one for breakfast- is that too much? I'm looking to lose weight.

djs replied: "If you like cereal, Raisin Bran is only about 220 calories for a bowl of cereal and more fulfilling than a Luna Bar. It is also very healthy. You could also try Frosted Mini Wheats."

RangerK replied: "Luna Bars are a great meal replacement bar. However, they don't keep you feeling full for a long time. But if you can get by until lunch on one, go for it. They aren't as healthy as, say, fresh fruit for breakfast, but it offers a lot of fiber and other minerals and vitamins that you need. So, I guess what I'm saying is if you're going to eat a bar, Luna Bars are a very good choice. I love the Chocolate Peppermint Stick."

savagesteve13 replied: "Look for these ingredients on the package label: hydrogenated vegetable oil corn syrup fructose maltitol splenda If one or more are there, try something a bit healthier than a heavily processed snack bar."

Does eating fast food affect weight loss if you are still eating less calories? Here is what I am planning on eating tomorrow: Breakfast- Quaker Oatmeal (140 cal) Lunch- Campbell's Select Harvest All Natural Tomato Basil Soup (200 cal) and a Caesar salad w/ no croutons or cheese(150 cal) Snack at work- Luna Bar (180 cal) and an apple (100 cal) Dinner: 2 soft shell beef tacos from Taco Bell (440 cal) That's 1210 calories for the whole day. Everything I'm planning on eating is healthy except for the tacos. But I can't eat dinner until I'm off of work which is at 9pm, and I don't want to have to make dinner. Is it going to affect my weight loss if I eat Taco Bell tacos? Or is it okay since I'm still within my caloric limit (1200 calories)?

Thorb replied: "well the amount of calories your taking is is pretty low. ide say that as long as you dont do this that often it wont affect you. however if you did more research on nutrition (i find to have plenty of resources on dieting) you would find that calories arent as important as where they come from. for instance protein is usually good all round but some things also contain saturated fat (like beef - unless its lean) that also contain protein. saturated fat is not that healthy for you especially since you want to lose weight. Taco shells are more than likely not whole grains which means it contains simple carbs that digest and enter the bloodstream relatively fast and will store as body fat sooner unless the energy is used up (like from exercising right after or before). Good fats on teh other hand (unsaturated fats excluding transfat) like that found in nuts peanut butter etc. digest slowly and are really healthy to eat especially when tryig to lose weight. complex carbs like that found in wheat bread/whole grains/oats and even fruits have it is also very beneficial as it digests slowly keeping your body burning calories at an increased rate for longer."

Weight Loss Question? Luna Bars? i like these nutrition bars called luna bars...they good for you and they satisfy my sweet tooth but how can i fit them into a healthy diet...there is 180 calories in one? how many calories should a 14 years old gorwing gril be getting when i exercise maybe 3 or 4 days out of the week?

two2fly replied: "Let's start by clarifying a couple of things: 1. weight is not the best indicator of your health (because muscle weighs more than fat, two people of the same height can weigh the same and be drastically different in terms of health). 2. Body fat percentage is a true indicator. 3. Fat is burned by reducing overall caloric value. 4. If you burn more than you consume, you will lose fat (lower body fat percentage) 5. If you exercise and strength train, you can burn more calories and replace fat with muscle which will allow you to burn calories even when you rest. If you are trying to lower your body fat percentage there are literally hundreds of ideas out there. In my opinion, the best way, which has been proven time and time again, is a two part method: Eat right and exercise. First, exercise is a no-brainer. You have to burn more calories than you take in for exercise to be considered exercise. How you do it is worth another answer all to itself. So, that brings us to the Eating Right part. If you understand how your body works, you've got a head start on the world. Food is fuel for the body. Once you've accepted that concept as more important than the idea that food is entertainment, then the rest will be relatively easy. If you are American, and I assume you are, the Nutrition Facts label that you find on all foods bought in the U.S. are the next thing you need to understand. Go grab something from your kitchen (i.e. jar of peanut butter or a bag of chips...anything with a nutrition label). OK, yeah you need vitamins and minerals and all that. But focus on these three items: FAT, PROTEIN, and CARBOHYDRATES. Let's take these one at a time: FAT is basically divided into good fats and bad fats. The body needs good fats (mono- and poly-unsaturateds). You'll find these in stuff like olives and avocados where the bad fat is minimal if not nonexistent. The bad fats are your saturated and trans fats that you'll find in meats and oils. If you are trying to lose weight, keep these to an absolute minimum. My suggestion (based on a 1500-2000 calorie diet) is to limit yourself to no more than 15g of saturated fat per day. This is hard to do if you're used to eating fast food. It's also hard to do if you drink whole milk, eat cheese (even the 2% variety), and eat fried foods. All of these are high in bad fats. The good news is that you can substitute your diet to eat the very things you like to eat but with better ingredients. If you eat cheese, buy fat free. If you drink milk, buy skim. Slowly take yourself down from whole milk or 2% to 1% before going skim/fat free if the transition is too radical to do all at once. If you eat a lot of ground beef, use the extra lean variety (96% fat free/4% fat), or substitute lean ground turkey instead. Do whatever you have to do to get the bad fat grams down to less than 15 per day. PROTEIN: The building block of nutrition (aside from your vitamins and minerals) is protein. You need it strengthen your muscles and it will be essential with your exercise routine. Without protein, you can't build muscle tone or lean body mass. And guess what? Just having lean body mass (muscles) allows your body to burn more calories even when you are sleeping. Therefore, you are able to lose weight (bad weight, that is) just by sleeping. But, you have to exercise!! Don't forget that. You can find foods that are high in protein but also high in saturated fat, so be careful. Stick to poultry (chicken, turkey), fish (tuna is a great source), and beans. Don't fry your meats because if you do, you just added a bunch of bad fat to your otherwise healthy protein filled meal. Instead, grill, broil, or bake. You can do this! Don't forget to exercise to exponentially reap the rewards of consuming protein. CARBS. In my opinion, the no-carb diet is crap, because you need carbs for energy, especially because you are exercising! That's right, you can't forget you are supposed to be exercising. The trick is choosing the good carbs. You'll see on your nutrition label Total Carbohydrates and Sugars. Sugars should be kept to a minimum and should be avoided within hours of going to sleep. The calories associated with them get stored (for energy) but are not easily burned when it comes time to burn them. Therefore, it's harder to lose the weight associated with them. That's why it's not good to eat lots of candy, cookies, and ice cream that have a lot of sugar. The other kinds of carbs (complex carbohydrates) are essential. You can get these from grains and potatoes. Good stuff!! Now that you have a brief understanding of these three nutrition components, time to get to it. Not as easy as it sounds? That's because, you're human. If you treat your body right (and I mean very right, by limiting your saturated and trans fats, limiting your sugar carbs, and eating plenty of protein), then you deserve a day when you can eat whatever you want. The body has cravings and you should be able to fulfill these cravings IF you can stand to wait until the end of the week. I call this one day of decadence your cheat day. After 12 weeks of exercising and eating right in this manner, you'll get to the point where you don't even crave the bad stuff anymore. For more on this method, I encourage you to check out. The principals I wrote about are spelled out in greater detail there. Consult your doctor before drastically changing any diet or exercise routine. Good luck!"

perrtynpink421 replied: "I cant help you with the question about the protein bars, as I have never tried any. But I do know that it is best to warm up on the treadmill or elliptical for maybe 10 minutes, and then do you normal workout. With warming up first, you heart rate is up, therefore making your body work harder. It is also good to do a warm down after you work out."

caramal replied: "Check the calories on those bars, they are usually pretty high. Cut out white food (bread, potatoes, bleached rice) add colored food. Add weights to your workout and add more cardio. Get some help from the staff where you work out, they can point you in the right direction."

mareeyum replied: "1. Drink plenty of water. Our body needs a lot of water so give in to water. Water is not just way to flush out toxin but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This it self will discourage any tendency to gorge. The best thing about water is that is has no calories at all. 2. Start your day with a glass of water. As soon as you wake up, gulp down a glass of cool water. It’s a wonderful way to start you day and you only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast drink after that. A glass of water lets out all your digestive juices and sort of lubricates the insides of your body. You may have your morning cup of tea but have it after a glass of water. It is good for you. 3. Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff yourself. 4. Have another glass of water while you are having the meal. Again this is another way of making yourself full so that you can actually rise from the table eating less but feeling full just the same. Instead of drinking it one gulp, take sips after each morsel. It will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that you are full faster. SIDENOTE: Water is such a remarkable thing, but seldom do we give it the credit that it deserves. Did you know that over 66% of your body weight is nothing but water’ It’s amazing! Water also plays a vital role in weight control, which is why I donated so much space to it, above. 5. Stay away from sweetened bottle drinks, especially sodas. Hey all those colas and fizzy drinks are sweetened with sugar and sugar means calories. The more you can cut out on these sweetened bottle drinks, the better for you. So if you must drink sodas, then stick to diet sodas. 6. Include in your diet things that contain more water like tomatoes and watermelons. These things contain 90 to 95 % water so that there is nothing that you have to lose by feasting on them. They fill you up without adding to the pounds. 7. Eat fresh fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is often sweetened but fresh fruits have natural sugars. When you eat fruit, you are taking in a lot of fiber, which is needed by the body, and fruits of course are an excellent source of vitamins. 8. If you do have a craving for fruit juice then go for fresh fruit juice instead of these that contain artificial flavors and colors. Or even better, try making your own fruit juice taking care not to sweeten it with too many calories. 9. Choose fresh fruit to processed fruits. Processed and canned fruits do not have as much fiber as fresh fruit and processed and canned fruits are nearly always sweetened. 10. Increase your fiber intake. Like I mentioned, the body needs a lot of fiber. So try to include in your diet as many fruits and vegetables as you can. 11. Go crazy on vegetables. Vegetables are your best bet when it comes to losing pounds. Nature has a terrific spread when it comes to choosing vegetables. And the leafy green vegetables are your best bet. Try to include a salad in you diet always"

ReMiXoLoGY replied: "1st, on the protein bars. you have to be pretty selective of which ones you choose because so many contain high amounts of sugar which is not a great thing to consume when you are trying to lose weight. 2nd, it may not be a good idea to load up on carbohydrates after a work out. instead, just resume your normal eating habits which should be restrictive of high fats and sugar contents and keeping carbs to a minimum. if you are serious about losing the weight you're gonna have to understand that the only way you can is if you were able to burn off more calories than you consume. your body will store sugars and carbs as fat if it's not burned off as energy so keeping those to a minimum in your diet is crucial for losing weight. it's not healthy to completely eliminate carbs from your diet, but if it's just for a short period it shouldn't be a problem. although it can be very difficult. my tips would be to just drink water, and if you must.. go for sugar free drinks like pepsi zero to temporarily satisfy those sugar cravings. but i wouldn't keep drinking those things. eat healthy snacks regularly to keep your appetite down and eat things you can enjoy and not torture yourself like carrots, almonds, lean beef jerky, etc... when you eat, keep your portions small and spread it out more in the day instead of just eating 3 large meals a day eat 6 smaller meals that are equal to those 3. that way your body is more able to absorb the nutrients and burn off the calories. your workout plan sounds good, but try to mix up to keep it fun and challenging."

what is a luna bar? what exactley is it for? energy? weight loss? or is it just a nutrition bar?

Bee! replied: "it's a nutrition bar marketed toward women because it contains folic acid, which is good for skin, nails and hair, and vital for pregnant women. They also taste delicious - waayyyy better than a candy bar!"

countrygirl replied: "luna bars suck their groos nutrition bars and there disgusting"

How am I losing weight? Could this be a health problem? I'm 5'8" and weigh 128, and continue to lose weight even though I eat unhealthy amounts of junk food. My weight it ideal for my height, and with my constant weight loss I don't want to become underweight. Heres what I ate today: Breakfast: 2 pieces of french toast with butter and maple syrup, 2 scrambled eggs, a piece of toast with jam, and a glass of orange juice. 2nd Breakfast (In school): A bagel with butter and cream cheese School Snack: A chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich, and a water bottle After school lunch: 6 pancakes with syrup and butter, 3 slices of bacon, and a glass of water. Snack: A bowl of popcorn and water. Dinner: Pizza, a Luna bar, and a cherry coke. Snack: Half a large bag of wise popcorn, a Luna bar, and 8 Go-gurts. **I have yet to finish eating for the day, I usually eat up until 1, when I go to bed. A lot of the time I eat a lot more than what I just listed. Is it normal for me to lose weight even though I eat like that? Or could it possibly be some sort of disease? I play no sports, and never exercise other than walking around my town a lot of the time. And for lent I gave up McDonalds. So I usually eat a double cheeseburger, fries, and a 4 piece chicken nugget in addition to that. And I eat at McDonalds DAILY.

Rick S replied: "sounds like you need to go to the doctor and talk with him/her about this problem"

I cant seem to lose the weight...? I am 22 years old, 210lbs. I have always been the "chubby" girl but I have finally realized that I dont have to be that girl anymore. I want to get down to about 150lbs. I have started to workout atleast 30 minutes 5 days a week... The problem is I hate working out. I just can never motivate myself enough to really do a kick butt workout. As for my eating.... I wont lie. I feel like I am addicted to food, I think about it all the time. I love to cook and I love to watch cooking shows. Its a problem. I have started to wake up in the morning and have a Luna Bar for breakfast... go workout for about a half hour... come home and clean or whatever and for lunch I normally have like a sandwich or soup. I have been thinking of just buying bags of salad and having that for lunch from now on. Then cooking for me and my boyfriend for dinner... I always try to have chicken or fish and some kind of veggie. I have cut out all potatoes and if we do have pasta it is whole wheat. I started doing this about a month ago and I have only lost one pound. I will admit that at night, when my boyfriend is snacking I tend to over indulge myself and then I feel really guilty. I guess I am just looking for some advice from people that have been in the same situation... My goal is to have lost the weight by 4th of July because we always have a big family party so I want to show off my new bod. Any advice would be great but please know that I DO NOT want to do like nutrisystem or anything that I have to pay money for. I also refuse to to take any type of weight loss pill. I just always read that the ones that say they are all natural really arent. So please leave that advice out. Thanks soooo much!!!

Swimming is an excellent way to lose weight.. make sure you challenge yourself... Drink lots of protein, eggs, fruits, vegetables.... if you want to lose weight EXTREMELY FAST.. try Acai berry with your exercise.. if you feel chubby right now... you will not feel it after you use acai... you will be lean and trim and catch the eye of all the guys"

grace r replied: "Start by cleaning your body from processed foods and chemicals, Do a 7 day detox diet such as the cabbage soup diet. This will clean out your system and prepare your body for a healthy new way of life. The 7 days are very easy to complete, you basically eat fruits and vegetables and towards the end of the 7 days introduce proteins and good carbs. This can help shift up to 10lbs in only 7 days alone. Drink plenty of water and increase your exercising, start off slow and work your way up. Once you have completed the 7 days continue to eat balanced healthy meals and remember you can have treats but in moderation. Continue to exercise and you will soon lost the weight, increase your energy levels and will be toning up. This website provides everything you need for free for the cabbage soup diet, including recipes for everyday of the 7 day plan including things like vegetable burgers and even healthy french fries! Together with a motivation page, no diet secrets and how to glow with energy Good luck :)"

Blessed replied: "Ok My mother used to weigh 220 and now she's 160. She never did surgery or took any pills. She hates working out so she never exercised either (which I don't advice) All she did was cut out the soda, fried foods, and bread. And that's how she lost all the weight in about a year. She had a lot of self control because she had been over weight her whole life and felt it was time to make a change. she's 40 now which is not old but she regrets losing all the weight at this age. Honey your 22 and that should be enough motivation to look your best. Don't wait til your 40 or 50 to realize you need to change. Now to the point ( sorry I talk so much) You need to buy a glamour magazine with celebrities on it (trust me) and an ipod. jut keep your mind off the exercise. focus on the toned celebrities and the music. you'll forget about the treadmill and eleptycal. do that for about 40 mins 5 days a week 20 mins on treadmill and 20 mins on eleptycal so you dont get bored. afetr 2 weeks try 1 class like pilates, spinning, yoga etc. at your gym PLUS the 40 mins cardion. Try that 2 months straight I guarantee you you'll get so used to the gym you won't stop going. im honestly addicted to the gym my Bestfriend and I do 40 mins cardio, and 1 hour of yoga and we feel great withourselves. She used to weigh 190 now she's 125 now I started at 165 lbs and now I'm 130 lbs and thats cause I love food like you. Please just try to watch what you eat for atleast 4 months while you exercise! after you see the progress I doubt you'll want to eat anything that's extreme fatning. Cut out the soda replace it with water! DO NOT drink juice! they have alot of sugar which will make you fat!! cut out the bread completely! and the sugar as well. you can have fried chicken once in a while just not breaded fried you understand the difference? No wraps with chicken that's flour! NO FLOUR NO SUGAR! basically stay away from white foods rice, crackers, bread, tortillas, etc. Good Luck! Hope I helped :)"

Best energy bar? i already love pria, luna and clif bars- what about zone bars? for weight loss? what are the best flavors?

Jewel M replied: "have you ever looked at the caloric content for energy bars? for me they have too much sugar, not enough real nutrition and too many uneeded calories for such a little bit of food."

steve l replied: "best rule of thumb: look at the number of carbs, the amount of sugar should be less than half that nuber, that way you know youre getting sustained energy not just fast sugar rushes that will leave more tired than before. It should have a small amount of protein to help fight the lactic acid caused from the trainig and to prevent muscle breakdown. Fat level should be low, and of course, find one you can actually finish because it doesnt taste like clay or sawdust,"

sixnutfury replied: "energy bars are for enrgy not for weight loss. if your gonna eat them for weight loss your in for a surprise."

blueruble replied: "I love the bodybuilder bar. It has 500 calories, however."

Tara Fabulous replied: "try the chocolate Power Bars"

Whats the best sports/energy bar post workout for muscle tone/formation? or SHOULD I even have one? I don't get enough protein in my diet or eat foods that help my muscles form/recover after a 90 minute intense running session. Should I eat a cliff bar or luna bar or myoplex or something? Will I still tone my legs even if I have one? Will it affect my weight loss goals? (measurements, not pounds)

Blitzed & Bombed replied: "You should be getting some kind of protein post-workout. Whether it comes from meat, an energy bar, or something else doesn't matter. Your body best absorbs protein up to one hour after a workout, so think of it as your window of opportunity. And no, it will not affect your weight loss goals, as long as the calories from the bar do not put you over your daily calorie limit. It will improve your strength though. ♣"

candybaby.&xo. replied: "I am no expert but you are supposed to have something to help your body after a workout so eat a protein bar AFTER you workout. .xo."
