GARDEN BIRD SURVEY
Summer Breeding Garden Bird Survey 2005

Thank you to those who took time to take part in this survey, now in its 5th year. All the records provided will be useful as an indication of urban breeding birds.
A total of 13 gardens took part in this survey (compared to 12 last year) and simple analysis of this data is given in the summary table.
If the survey proves to be as popular as the winter one, the analysis of data may be increased.  At the moment, this survey is still in its infancy and hopefully it will develop and be fine-tuned over the coming years, just as the winter survey has.
Thanks also to those who supplied information on breeding birds in their general neighbourhood.  These extra records are indicated in the brackets where the information provided showed that the birds were not in a garden/urban environment.
The results show that only Blackbird was recorded in all the gardens, while House Sparrow & Blue Tit were in all but one.

The most common breeding bird during the survey period was once again the Blackbird which produced the most records in all the categories.  This is probably what we would expect.  The next most common birds in our gardens are House Sparrow and Blue Tit.  These are the same top 3 species as in last year’s survey.
In total 28 species were confirmed as being present during the breeding season in the study gardens/neighbourhoods of which 24 were actually present in peoples gardens.
I look forward to next years, hopefully increased survey return. In the mean time if anyone has suggestions on how we can improve the survey, please let me know.
