The "Prince of Wales" Section. The state of the restored 11 ½ mile section centred around Welshpool containing 11 locks , although navigable, is deteriorating due to insufficient use by boats as the section is still isolated from the main network. The section provides an enjoyable 3 to 4 days cruising and access slipways are available at Welshpool and The Wern. ( Details available from B.W.'s Burgedin Office Tel: 01938 590079 ). If you have a Trailboat or other craft then PLEASE HELP by using this section to prevent further deterioration.
Freestone Lock to Newtown Section. A grant of £4,000 to Powys County Council has been announced by the I.W.A. towards a feasability study into extending the canal from Freestone Lock to its original destination of Newtown. This extension has the strong support of Newtown Council and other organisations including the M.W.R.T. , B.W., Newtown Partnership and the Welsh Development Agency.
MAERDY BRIDGE. Near to Ardleen on the A483 Trunk road. Three remaining options are still under consideration to overcome the obstacle of the dropped bridge adjacent to Maerdy Cottage. 1) To re-align the road to the west of the canal with a new raised roundabout. 2) To create a new route for the canal staying on the western side of the A483. 3) Cross the A483 further south where there would be no need to change the present height of the road. Option 3 is the most favoured as, although requiring a minor road crossing and culvert for a brook, it meets the criteria laid down. Namely - Road safety, disruption levels during construction, the impact on local properties and the future navigation. A potential gain of this option is that the existing channel of the canal could then be maintained as a new wetland nature reserve ( similar to that at Whitehouse bridge west of Welshpool) . The Welsh Assembly have agreed in principle to this option and B.W. Is in contact with landowners along the route. The photo below was taken along the A483 looking north across the site of the proposed new crossing..
