Rather than simply retreading the original story (as many sequels do) the sequel offers a new story: Woody the cowboy doll is stolen by a greasy toy collector who needs him to complete a set of toys based on characters from a defunct fifties kids TV show ‘Woody’s Round-Up”. While Buzz and the other toys launch a dangerous rescue mission Woody finds he has a serious dilemma on his hands – namely should he go back to his friends knowing that he’ll be forgotten when his owner gets too old for him or should he agree to some kind of immortality in a Japanese museum? This is pretty deep stuff for a kids film (if you really wanted to you could argue that it was an allegory for death – but lets not get into that now…) but it's all handled with such a light touch that the kids will lap it up. While Woody is struggling with his morals Buzz Slinky Mr. Potato Head Ham and the rest embark on an epic journey to rescue him. This in itself works as a brilliant action comedy. Oversize obstacles are handled with Buzz’s usual adversity. Even for an adult audience this is exciting edge of the seat stuff. Armed with the witty script you would expect and topped off with a priceless Empire Strikes Back spoof and a string of genuinely hilarious mock “out-takes” Toy Story 2 is that rare beast a sequel which manages to be superior to its original.
