Tobey Maguire is settling nicely into leading man territory and while Michael Caine's accent is a little shaky his performance is very watchable as the films most interesting character. The plot - as expected from an Irving story - is fairly episodic the first half dealing with Homer's time in the orphanage the second having him working in an orchard and living in the cider house of the title (the 'rules' of which are pinned to the wall) along with a bunch of itinerate black apple-pickers led by the ever excellent (although curiously not featured on the cover) Delroy Lindo. Thanks largely to the acting and the always attractive photography the film always manages to be compelling and never bores however as far as cider goes this is a little too sickly sweet and would have benefited from the bitter edge which Irving is most certainly capable of.
