Silence Of The Lambs (2 Discs) (DVD) Intelligent and disturbing thriller based on Thomas Harris' novel. On the trail of a dangerous serial killer a rookie FBI agent employs the help of incarcerated sociopath Dr. Hannibal Lector. His price is admission to her own mind... Jodie Foster Anthony Hopkins and director Jonathan Demme all picked up Oscars. It's odd to think that Jonathan Demme's muti-award winning shocker should have had such a monumental effect on the nature of the Hollywood thriller. Firstly inspiring hundreds of inferior serial-killer-thrillers and more surprisingly firmly establishing Welsh thesp. Anthony Hopkins as a very scary man indeed. However few of the glut of films which came later - not even it's own belated sequel Hannibal - could come close to the atmosphere of menace conjured up here. The key to the films success lies in the relationship between budding Fed Clarice Starling (Foster) and behind-bars lunatic Hannibal Lector (Hopkins). The scenes in which they are together - from the now legendary "Do not touch the glass" scene onwards - achieve something genuinely frightening. Here the film is more interested in characterisation than shock tactics and the fear derives from Clarice "letting him into her mind" rather than any threat of him leaping out of the cage and attacking her. The psychological threat is every bit as tangible as the physical threat from loony-on-the-loose 'Buffalo Bill' (Ted Lavine). This is in part thanks to the performances of the two leads but also from Demme's sly direction. The photography is bleak the gritty production design atmospheric while the lighting is often stark. Clairce's vulnerability seems heightened belying Foster's determined performance. Demme also employs some nifty tricks to build the suspense notably the brilliantly handled house-swapping feint and the subsequent dark-room scenes. Hannibal let Lector run loose but neglected Clarice. Here Clarice is the main character and Lector while only a supporting role lets his presence be felt in every scene. It's frightening because by the time the credits roll you want him out of your mind.
