Except on Sunday

"Early in the morning Bernadette
dresses their five children,
feeds them and sends them
off to walk to school.
At eight o'clock she prepares her husband
Simon's favourite meal of yams
in a fish sauce.
Then she climbs the hot hills to take it to him.
She does this every day, except Sunday.

Except on Sunday ... explores in words and pictures the life of a typical family living off the land in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

This evening Bernadette is cooking rice
bought from the market and the vegetables
from Simon's plantation.
Ronide, their youngest child,
is happy to help and learn from her mother.

At bedtime Bernadette tells Ronide
her favourite story.
It is of a little girl who sings to a magic fish.
In return, the fish makes sure that the water
in the well is always pure.

Simon leaves the hills at five o'clock
in the evening and arrives home about seven.
He is tired and hungry.
