Jon Newby continued his progress last season when he made his long awaited Liverpool debut, in the Worthington Cup game against Hull City at Anfield. He made his league debut in the goalless draw with Middlesbrough at Anfield in January, and in the absence of the injured Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, became a regular in the first team squad. 

The reserves leading scorer in their championship winning side, he also spent a spell on loan with Crewe Alexandra to gain first team experience. The striker had progressed through the ranks after joining Liverpool as a nine-year-old in 1988 and featured alongside Michael Owen during the club's 1996 FA Youth Cup triumph. Currently on a three-month loan at First Division outfit Sheffield United.
