Titi Camara was the first footballer from Guinea to seal a move to
English football, his unpredictable style of play sure to cause much excitement for crowds everywhere.
He began his career with French club St Etienne in 1990 where he spent
five years and scored sixteen goals. RC Lens were sufficiently impressed with his performances to offer him the chance to play for them and
Camara scored twelve goals in 63 appearances over the next two seasons.
He then moved to his third French club when Olympique Marseilles signed him, but he found first team chances hard to come by due to the
quality within the Marseilles squad. He registered six league goals for Marseilles and two other strikes in the UEFA Cup. Frustrated at his lack
of regular football he didn't hesitate to agree a move to Liverpool in the
summer of 1999 when Gérard Houllier offered him the chance to once
gain kick-start his career.
Houllier, conscious of the need to strengthen his attacking options during the summer months, had known of Camara's ability for many
years and his decision to begin the 1999 season with Camara partnering Robbie Fowler in attack illustrated the faith of the Liverpool boss in the
new striker.
Camara could hardly have made a better start to his Liverpool career
when he scored on his Premiership debut at Sheffield Wenesday on the opening day of the league season. His strong, powerful running and
obvious eye for goal quickly made him a hit with the Liverpool supporters who immediately took him to their hearts.
