Learning Objectives

Pupils ...

·                Learn about the areas that we as humans use animals for good and bad

·                Learn about the moral implications of  animal testing and the views on either side of the debate

·                Look at Christian views about animal rights

Consider how to answer a question on animal rights in the exam

·                 

 

 

Teaching approach and activities

 

Starter:

·                State objectives

·                Recap Sanctity of Life (Euthanasia and Abortion)

·                In small groups list as many ways that we use animals (rank from the animals point of view)

Main Activities:

·                Teacher led discussion ‘What rights should animals have?’

·                Discuss the implications of the video and list three arguments for and against animal testing.

·                Hand out quotes sheet

·                Discuss the quotes

·                Use information gained so far to answer exam question on animal rights using the writing frame on the wall.

Plenary:

·                Read through good answers

·                Give out and discuss an example of a level 4 answer

 

Outcomes and assessment

 

Most pupils will…

·                Be able to identify and explain the range of views around the issue of animal rights

·                Be able to explain the views of Christians about animal rights

·                Be able to produce an exam answer at level 3 (5-6 marks)

 

Some pupils will not have made as much progress and will...

·                Be able to identify some views about animal rights

·                Be able to explain a view of Christians about animal rights

·                Be able to produce an exam answer of at least level 2 (4 marks)

 

Some pupils will have made more progress and will…

·                Be able to compare and contrast Christian views showing and explaining diversity within the tradition.

·                Be able to produce an exam answer of at least level 4 (7-8 marks)

 

Assessment is based on the written exam answer.
