Originally with my 740GLE.
Upgraded to the 850GLE, which the better half won't give back to me....so THE
NEW PURCHASE
After purchasing this in Dec 2003, its been a long
time in the works it seems for me. At long last the time has come to put
her on the road! The purchase price was a steal to be honest and I
soon discovered why as the repair bills (parts only) sky rocketed weekly.
Suffice as to say, the 850 now has, and new timing belt & tensioner,
engine belt & tensioner, new drive shaft boots, new ball joints, & tie rod
ends! I managed to pick up a spolier the exact color from the Japhoo!
auction boards and also a genuine 6 CD changer.

First of course was the strip down,
removal of all the door liners, door handles etc. in prep for the
the re-spray. In other words fill the back seat & boot with as
much as it can hold! Door visors, CD changer cable, speaker covers
and the door liners in the boot. Yes!! I
have a Boot now big enough to
fit three dead bodies in...... |
 |
The bonnet in progress, removing all
those little stone chips! blended down to the side panel for color
matching |
 |
The experts at SYT handled the large
panel spraying, metallic silver 2 coats and 3 coats of clear for a
deep luster. |
 |
The front side molding, previously
grey, now matched to the body. |
 |
I got to 'play' with the big boys
toys on the fiddly bits, handles and bumper moldings, first time to
use a professional spray-gun, a new career for me perhaps!? |

REGISTRATION |

28-32 |
On the road before the paint dried,
literally! Looking good....maybe a little too good, which gave
rise to a vandal attack whilst parked, in the form of a 3 foot long
car key-scratch along the driver's side rear door, sometimes
swearing is just not enough!!! By the way this is called a
'10yen (ju enn) Punch' in Japan. Back to the shop for a quick
repair. |

INTERIOR OUTFITTING |

Grey wood grain / marble was the
decided theme for the interior accessories, drink holders, steering
wheel cover, and matching ashtray!! Hmmm sleek! |

6 CD changer, Genuine
Volvo 6 CD changer mounted under the passengers side seat, bought
via Yahoo along with the mounting kit. Luckily in the Sedan
you can rear mount it in the boot, this is the way to go I think.
The wife's 850 Wagon's CD gets constantly kicked in its passengers
seat location. |

Portable DVD Player, HOMITA HPU702

EXTERIOR WORK |
As Purchased

Circa Mar 2004
(without the 17' wheels) |
First was the application of some
pin-striping, custom cutting of some 'OZSamurai' logo stickers for
the front quarter panels, nice! |
|
Yahoo Auctions yielded up a genuine
spoiler for me in the right color, so a few hours figuring out what
went where and how, and I now have a wing!! |
| Wheels

|
The 1993 850 has its own set of
problems when it comes to finding wheels, not only is it already
difficult to match the 108mm PCD, but to add to this the 1993 model
ONLY has 4 studs, not 5 as the 1994 onwards models do. With an
offset of 40 and a bulk of room up the 850 is just begging to have
some larger rims!
PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) Adaptors,
change the PCD to a common more PCD, for example 114.3 or 100, and
are available from
E-Tire
(Japanese ONLY)
Problem? the
adaptors increase the offset to +50 and require M12 1.75 length
bolts......hmmmm However, with thicknesses
starting at 15mm~35mm, they serve a wheel spacers also.
KONIG Makes a good
range of wheels up to 18" for the 850 4X108 stud pattern and
appropriate offsets. The easiest site I found to navigate
their selection was
rochfordtyres.co.uk
The final choice was made for me
when a great set of 17' were going begging on the Auction boards
from a Ford Mondeo, which happens to have the same PCD and reltivelt
close center cap and offset.....Photos should follow..

ISSUES TO RESOLVE |
|
As with any used car there are things
that need attending to, this section is more of a diary on how I got
around them or fixed them or not!, and the information sources etc.
The
Brickboard is the place to get real advice from other users |
|
Cruise Control Inoperative |
Hmmmmm stage! |
|
Driver's seat back cable broken |
I have known this is an issue with
the 850 Series before I bought mine, in fact Volvo even knows about
it as there are so many occurrences. So while I was kicking
the tyres before purchase I checked it out, no problems. But
as Murphy would have it, 2 weeks later it broke. Thanks to the
power of the internet, the fix can be found here at
Bay13,
now I just have to get the guts up to actually hack into my half leather
seats! |
|
Driver's side seat heater won't warm |
This along with the TRACS is a recall
item on the 850, so I was more than happy to take it in to the Volvo
dealer and ask them to fix it for free! They do a VIN check on
the car to ensure it has not been covered under warranty already,
then they try to protest over doing a vehicle they didn't originally
sell, in any case you just stand there till they finish griping and
say 'So, when do you want me to bring it in?'
So I took it in,
had the recall done, but, it still doesn't work! Shoddy workmanship
from Volvo? SO, back to the boards for some advice!
You may try
to look under the seat and follow the cables to the
thermostat connection. There are two connectors that plug into the
thermostat. They have a tendency to break (the cable breaks loose
from the connector). You can just get a similar connector, tear the
plastic housing open and put the new one in (after connecting the
cable of course). Then you have to wrap the housing with insulation
tape and put the connectors back in the thermostat. Don't worry
about the polarity. If you don't feel the heat after 3 minutes, just
reverse the polarity. Both seats in my 850 had this problem. Now
they work great. |
|
Digital meter inoperative |
When I picked the car up I noticed
the LCD trip meter was acting a little weird, sure enough as soon as
it came out of the spray & repair shop, it disappeared all together!
In vain hope I pulled out my Haynes manual and went through the fuse
check procedure, no problems there! Down to the Volvo dealer to see
what he had to say about the issue (NB I hate Volvo dealers!!) They
quote me $600~$800 to replace it, no fix, sorry!
Thank you for
your usual kind assfistance!
Yahoo Auction
yielded a second-hand unit for $80, took 2 hrs to replace, remove
dash, slide out old meter, drop in new one, replace dashboard! Turn
on headlights next day to find one bulb blown, remove dashboard
again, remove meter, replace bulb, drop in meter, replace dashboard.
Note to self and
others = Check all the lights in the meter before you put the
dashboard back in. |
| Programming the
key fob! |
1. Turn the ignition key “OFF” and “ON” five
times (do not start, but to the “ON” position) and on the fifth time
leave in the “ON” position and press one of the buttons on the
remote. This will program that remote into the car.
If you have more than one remote: (up to three remotes can be
programmed)
2. Press a button on the other remote as well, within 10 seconds of
the button press on the first remote.
Now all I have to do is find a
remote!! |
|
Jammy Window Switch |
The center console
window switch decided to pack it in, well the passengers side did at
least. As Murphy's Law would have it, the day it decided that
it would no longer close the window was the day that it pouring with
rain, my wife was not impressed!
I tried to find a reasonably priced
replacement, but Reasonable and Volvo parts just don't
seem to be paired in anyone's vocabulary. So I did what every
man does, pulled it apart to see how it works! After figuring it was
a non-repair type, I repaired it anyway, cleaning the contact points
of carbon build up, bingo! I thought, until of course you guessed it
the next rainy day!
Currently some kind guys from the
Emerald Isle have located a switch for me and it should be on its
way hope this solves the issue... |
