fire is a strange phenomenon. physically, it's the reaction wave of rapid combustion, a (usually) visible aspect of what's happening to the materials being burned & recombined into different molecules, but it's not the atoms themselves, it's what's happening to the particles! so you may have your toys & wicks in hand, but since the wicks are intended to last as long as possible with good care, what's really being burned up & producing the fire is your fuel.
it pays to know the properties, cautions, & best ways to use your fuel. go to the SAFETY section of our website to read the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) intel on popular fuels, which puts da science in da art. once ya got ya hot little hands around the profiles of your fuels, you may want to get a selection of the ones most used around here:
a basic collection [in descending brightness]
- Coleman Fuel [aka White Gas, Calumet Lantern Fuel, pure naphtha]
- kerosene [aka K1, K-1, & spelled "kerosine"]
- lamp oil [aka paraffin oil, white, pure as you can get, or "smokeless"]
- vegetable oil [variations include da ancient olive oil]
- isopropyl alcohol [70%+ or it's pretty weak, use 90%+]
- 120 - 200 proof [=60 - 100%] proof liquors [if you're of legal age!]
- flame-coloring chemicals [advanced option]
- batteries, candles, lighters/matches, gasoline
along the Orange coast, truth is, once ya get the hang of different fuels, pyros around here use a pretty free hand in mixing up custom recipes by combining different fuels for their effects on the final product. you'll want to use different fuels for different thangs, each with its own requirements & effects:
