Monitor

The monitor is the huge box which displays the graphics of the computer. It is also called the display screen. There are in fact, three different types of monitors and they are the monochrome, gray-scale and color. As the name suggests, monochrome monitor displays only one color for the background and one color for the foreground.

The color combination can be black and white, green and black or amber and black. The gray-scale monitor is an improvement over the monochrome monitor and requires more memory. A gray-scale monitor displays its graphics in different shades of gray.

The color monitor uses the RGB color model which means that they accept three separate signals. These signals are red, green and blue and when placed next to each other using different intensities, the monitor will be able to display a wide array of colors. Monitors are identified through their screen size.

The screen size is measured in inches, which is the distance from one corner to the opposite diagonal corner. Currently, a standard sized monitor is 14 inches. However, the screen size is sometimes misleading, as there is an area around the edge of the screen that cannot be used. Consequently, manufacturers now have to specify the area of the screen that is actually used. Sometimes, you hear people talking about the resolution of the monitor.

The resolution indicates how tightly packed the pixels are. The more pixels, the sharper the image. Most monitors can either display 800 x 600 pixels or 1024 x 768 pixels. Obviously, the 1024 x 768 monitor will produce a sharper image. You probably have heard of the term dot pitch before. The dot pitch is actually the amount of space between each pixel on the monitor. This means that the smaller the distance/dot pitch, the sharper the image will be.
