Banditry and organised crime is intensifying in post conflict situations. As has been recently reported by The Economist, security in northern and western Afghanistan is very precarious and large-scale corruption is spreading. The production of Afghan opium is growing and in 2004 opium crop is set to break all previous records. In the south of the country, drug lords are very powerful while the government is extremely weak. Hopefully, the first ever presidential election will be a milestone in Afghanistan's path towards democracy and stability.

The group is keen to increase membership and would ask members to help in this recruitment process, in particular, by suggesting possible new members. Members do not have to be from an ECPR institution. We are interested in expanding our network to recruit academics and practitioners so that we can have an exchange of ideas and develop projects together.
Please suggest names if you can.
