This is a species that I have needed to photograph for some time as I have not been lucky with them despite a few visits, they roost on rocks near the jet-ski ramp at high tide. I got there about an hour before peak water and got into place and waited, it was not long before they arrived and sat about 20 ft from me, they changed position a few times after being deluged by breaking waves, giving me the chance to photograph them on various rocks. Sadly the birds were flushed about a hundred yards down the beach to a breakwater, by the arrival of other birders who stomped over to my position exclaiming loudly about how close they were, it is a shame that some are unaware that it takes preplanning, time and care to get such good views!
