Hovering Barn Owl

at Welney

February 23rd 2003

I have spent a good deal of time on the Barn Owls at Welney, yesterday I nearly didn't go as it was my daughters birthday dinner party in the evening, I had to be away from there by 4:30 on the dot to stand any chance of getting home and spruced up for the do.

The Short-eared Owl was out hunting at about 1:45 pm and the Barn Owl was flushed from roosting in a ditch by the SEO at about 2:05 pm. I spent some time using the car as a hide and some hour or so camouflaged and hidden in a heap of branches that the Owl had hunted around on previous days, It was from here that I got some spectacular shots of the bird hovering.

The Owl, a nominate race female, did catch a mouse as a result, but disappointingly not in a position that gave clear shots, but you can see the legs and tail of the unfortunate victim in this image.
