From
a young age Neil was recording and performing music. Born 27th
May 1958, Te Awamutu, New Zealand. Growing up, his closest influence
came through his brother Tim, and his band Split Enz. Neil began
performing and writing at an early age and went on to succesfully
support Split Enz for a tour before forming his first band,
After Hours. When the band split, Tim asked Neil to join Split
Enz. Neil joined the band and went onto write major hits for
the band, most succesfull being the infamous 'i got you'. After
the band split, Neil, Paul Hester and Nick Seymor formed the
band 'The Mullanes' (mullane being Neils middle name). After
moving to LA in 1985 to find a contract the name was changed
to Crowded House.
The band were noticed by Michell Froom who went onto produce
the first 3 albums. From the first album 'Crowded House', 'Don't
dream it over' reached number 2 in the american charts and recieved
critical acclaim world over. The Next album, Temple of low men,
whilst not spawning any major singles, was still a big seller
all over the world. Tim joined the band for the third album
woodface and although the album did not achieve the attention
it deserved in the US (maybe because the first single off it
in was 'Choclate Cake') it was massive in the UK, spawning a
number of hit singles, such as 'Weather with you', 'fall at
your feet' and 'its only Natural'. Tim left the band and they
went onto record they're last full studio album, (and in my
opinion they're best), together alone. Neil then joined his
brother Tim for a Finn brothers project, the end product being
the album 'finn' and a tour. After the band decided to split
in 1996 they released a best of CD 'recurring dream' and performed
a farewell gig on the steps of the Sydney opera house.
Neil
then went onto write solo material with the release of 'Try
Whistling This', neils eagerly awaited first solo album. After
a succesful tour, Neil began working on material for his Next
Album One Nil, released 2001 and followed by a number of gigs
most notable the Neil Finn and Friends gigs, with Jonny Marr,
Phil Selway (Radiohead), Ed O Brian (Radiohead), Lisa Germano,
Sebastian Steinburg (who also contrubuted to TWT and one nil),
Tim Finn and Eddie Vedder. This gig was released on CD,VHS and
DVD as 'Seven worlds collide'. Neil has recently signed to the
US nettwerk america, for a US release of 'One Nil', now retitled
to 'One All' and including new tracks, along with the removal
of some of One Nil's tracks.
