Christian Ethics - Issues Facing Christians Today |
Haggai gently draws attention to the contrast between past and present and invites them to own it. He reminds them that their days of glory lie in the past. There was once a day when Davidic kings rules in Jerusalem, all they have now is Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel. His genealogy is okay but in reality he is a ‘governor’ appointed by the Persians. |
I am with you, be strong, says Yahweh Sebaot. |
The phrase is Haggai’s special title for God, English translations have the LORD Almighty - which waters it down. More accurate would be Yahweh Armies - a concrete and vivid expression of the power of God, which the people of God need to believe in. Today we may say ‘be strong for the LORD SAS is with you’. You are more than ordinary people because this God is with you. |
My Spirit remains strong among you. Do not be afraid. Remember how it was when I brought you out of Egypt. |
The hidden facts about God in the present provide a context in which we face facts about an individual's illness, or about a nation which has lost an empire and not found a role, or about a church in decline. Hope lies not in doctrinal soundness or trendiness or social involvement or the latest Charismatic bandwagon. Haggai’s encouragement in is God. The resource of the church is God active in a hidden way building up the people of God as a temple of the Holy Spirit. |
Faith means being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Heb 11:1). |
The recurrent word in Haggai is glory. For Israel it will mean peace (NIV) or prosperity (RSV), both aspects of Goddess shalom. |
The facts about the future are guaranteed by the Word of Yahweh Armies - Almighty God. When God speaks, things will happen. Lets face the facts and do as God calls. |
