The Battle of Marble Hill 2002!!!!!

MARBLE HILL 1st XI 5-3 MARBLE HILL RESERVES --10/03/2002--

In this friendly match between the 1st and second teams of Marble, a poor turnout forced the game to be played 9 aside. It
Was a match in which a Brazilian player not registered with the club (he was eligible to play as this was not an official
league game) shone through and won the game for the 1st team with a blistering hat trick. The second string started the brighter
and forced some good saves from 1st team 'keeper Malcolm Nichloas. But it didn't take the reserves long to break the deadlock
Grant Hudson striking
from inside the penalty area. The usual reserve goalkeeper Dave West did not play so Daniel Adamski deputised between the
sticks, he was rarely troubled in the first half, leaving his box on a few occasions to clear the ball up field. The 1 save
he did have to make was when the un-registered Brazilian Stef raced through, Adamski left his box and collected the ball at
the feet of the striker. As half time approached the 1st team got a lucky equaliser. A cross by 1st team striker Sam Sze was
travelling towards the penalty spot for a routine catch for Adamski, when it hit Peter Fenn, who was back defending, and cannoned
into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

HALF TIME- Marble Hill 1st XI 1-1 MARBLE HILL RESERVES

Early in the second half the 1st XI went ahead, a wonderful free kick 20 yards out and central to the goal by Kev Jones left
'keeper Adamski stranded. For Welshman Jones it was a warning to the rest of the league that he is dangerous from set pieces.
Marble reserves soon found an equaliser only to slip behind after hesitant defending left Sam 1-on-1 with Adamski, Sze lobbed
the goalie and Stef scored the 1st of his 3 after just beating a defender on the line. The reserves soon rallied to make it
3-3 only to give up another soft goal, a mix up between reserves defender John Williams and 'keeper Adamski resulted in Stef
slotting home to make it 4-3 to the firsts. Again the reserves battled for an equaliser and Hudsons sweet shot from the edge
of the penalty box rattled the cross bar and bounced down just in front of the goal line (where’s the Russian lino when you
need him?). Soon after Stef completed his hat trick battling past a defender to beat the advancing keeper, although Adamski
got both hands to the ball he couldn't keep it out. Then on the stroke of full time Matt Reynolds charged forwards for the
1st XI and was brought down by Adamski in the penalty box. If this had been a league game it could have resulted in a red
card (certainly a yellow) but the ref decided as it was a friendly (and he didn’t have any cards) a penalty was punishment
enough. The
firsts goalkeeper Nicholas raced up to take the kick. It was 'keeper versus 'keeper, and the reserve man prevailed saving
a week penalty with his feet as the rebound shot out towards the onrushing forwards the ref blew the final whistle.
