Vlastimil Milan BRYCH, a.k.a. Dr. Milan Brych, has been called a quack, a charlatan, a ruthless, calculating, intelligent psychopath, who setup a lucrative off-shore cancer clinic in the Cook Islands.

Go to a Cancer Quack, It's Your Life

How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spread his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws.

Vlastimil Milan BRYCH (prounounced "brick") practiced alternative cancer therapy without having qualified as a physician with orthodox medical training.  The history of Dr. Milan Brych covers from 1968 to about 1988 (approximately) in the countries of New Zealand, Australia, Cook Islands, and Los Angeles, California. This website has compiled material to tell this story of the Milan Brych Affair, a story about manipulation of people, manipulation of groups of people, manipulation of the media, manipulation of money.  We encourage you to read ALL the information on this website in order to read both sides of the history of Milan Brych--there are loyal supporters and believers in Dr. Brych, and there are those who denounce Milan Brych.  If Brych has the courage to attempt another defence of his reputation, we would be most happy, for the sake of objective fairness, to give him some web space here, to voice his own side of his story.  Brych is not without his supporters.

Brych in Brief:

Dr Milan Brych, the Oncologist - Brych's secret Immunotherapy techniques

Prior to claiming to be a doctor and practicing cancer treatments on patients, Milan Brych had not graduated from a recognized medical school.  Milan Brych also has a lengthy criminal record.  After reading several articles spanning nearly 20 years, if one does not draw a definitive conclusion about "Dr." Milan Brych, one certainly comes away with at least some "impressions" of him.  Whether he was a cancer quack, medical charlatan, or genius is not for us to declare or pass judgment. We leave you to form your own opinion.  But at the very least, it is remarkable, (albeit, perhaps immoral, even illegal) that Milan Brych was able to convince the established medical community of his supposed medical credentials and qualifications.  He obviously must have had some medical knowledge and intellectual prowess to have convinced the NZ medical authorities to grant him a physician's license and to practice cancer treatments on patients. Equally surprising, is that many patients had sworn by his treatment and strongly defended him. (See the "patients" and "interviews" sections of this website).  Did Brych have such power over so many people?  Ironically, it was so many people, lay and professionals, who empowered Brych.  Brych began his career in cancer quackery soon after arriving in New Zealand in 1968 as a Czech refugee.  After careful manipulation of people and events (including the media), Brych was able to succeed in his first major con:  gaining medical registration as a qualified physician.  Eventually, it was discovered he had no qualifications, only a criminal record.  After Brych was deregistered in NZ, he moved his cancer practice to Rarotonga, Cook Islands, where the premier, Sir Albert Henry, welcomed him along with the incoming cash flow that would be a by-product of Brych's practice.

Dr Milan Brych, the Immunologist - Brych's tainted Immuno-Modulators

The continued interest in Milan Brych is that his story is without conclusion, in that he continues with his same, refined manipulative strategies, but targeting different victims.  His first success in  cancer quackery (that spanned 15 to 20 years) appears to have encouraged Brych to focus next on a new specialty: "immunotherapy."  After 1988, Brych had mostly abandoned his cancer scheme, and has turned his skills of quackery to the field of immunotherapy.  An unconfirmed report sent in to us indicates that in 1998 Brych created the company, Magnalab Pully, in Switzerland, and although the company is/was supposedly owned by Brych, we have unconfirmed evidence that it might have been heavily financed by others--Brych usually gets others to put up the risk-money for his ventures.  We have received information, however it is unconfirmed, that Brych might plan to use immunomodulators to treat various auto-immune diseases such as lupus erythematosis, rheumatoid arthritis, myasthenia gravis, allergies, skin diseases (psoriasis), glomerulonephritis, and diabetes (maybe Pig Cell transplants?) and perhaps other related diseases.  AIDS could be a choice disease for Brych to exploit given that during the late 1990s (early 2000s) AIDS is not completely understood.  Brych's success in cancer quackery was due, in part, to there being little known about cancer during the mid 1970s. Brych's propositions appear to be well-intentioned, but they are not.  Brych has shown no remorse for his past crimes and there is no indication that he will cease to endanger people's health with unapproved medicines or treatments, and con individuals and institutions of millions of dollars.

The shift from immunotherapy cancer treatments to immunotherapy for diabetes and other diseases is a reprise of vintage Brych:  a product, perhaps even legitimate and scientifically sound, claiming to use natural methods of boosting the immune system, but perhaps laced* with steroid hormone protein molecules, in a similar vein (pardon the pun) like he used in his 1970s cancer treatments. [* our speculation based on unverified evidence sent in to us].  Brych's miracle cancer cure of the 1970s was found to be nothing more than a solution of steroid hormones.  This is not to say that all immunomodulators or immunotherapies are quackery, but we sincerely doubt that Brych's formula is anything more than a means to manipulate the movement of money into his own bank account!   It worked before, conning the cancer patients and medical professionals, gaining Milan Brych huge financial success followed by a short jail term (California).  So why not try it again?  Except this time, change countries and target a new and unsuspecting community:  the natural / health food and pharmaceutical industries.  Undoubtedly, there are big bucks to be conned in these legitimate industries.  And let us not be fooled again by Milan Brych, who paradoxically, might indignantly denounce the use of immuno-modulators, specifically, Vectorex and Scalarex, so that others who are pursuing legitimate research, production, marketing of immune therapy products might also fail as Brych recently has.  There are many alternative, holistic, naturopathic treatments  available in several countries of the world that should not be associated among the ranks of quacks and charlatans like Milan Brych. This is simply more vintage Brych strategy:  associate himself with honest, orthodox professionals and ride their success wave--and after cashing in on it, destroy them and their patients in the process.

Dr Milan Brych,  the Porkologist??

...we digress a little, to bring you an interesting bit of history linked to present-day history (March 2002) in the making...The Cook Islands strikes again!!

We've also learned of unconfirmed reports that, during the year 2000 to present (approximately), Brych might be working behind the scenes on a new Pig Cell therapy. We do not know if Brych is involved with Diatranz, a company that hopes to cure diabetes by transplanting pig cells into humans.  Has anyone ever heard of retro-viruses?  It would not surprise us if Brych might be involved with this Pig Cell therapy venture, since Dr. Joe Williams, who is pushing to get Pig Cell therapy in the Cook Islands, was instrumental in helping Milan Brych set up his alternative cancer clinic on Rarotonga in 1977.  Brych became wealthy from his secret immunotherapy treatment for cancer.  What would be Brych's motivation for his involvement (if he is involved) in Pig Cell diabetes therapy?  For another lucrative opportunity or for a genuine interest in advancing medicine?  We thought Brych was a cancer specialist, now he is a diabetes specialist?  Evidently, Cook Islands is eager to host these Pig Cell transplants perhaps because of the promise of high profits if a cure for diabetes comes from it.  Pig Cell transplants are not allowed in countries where orthodox medical principles are followed.  Once again, Cook Islands appears to be interested in hosting a questionable and potentially dangerous medical program--which will likely cost the patients much money and quite possibly even their lives.

And we thought WE were daring & suspicious for linking Dr. Joe Williams to Milan Brych...Check this link:  NZ National News, March 7, 2002  (cached here on this website)  OR: NZ Nat News (Internet URL)

Recommended (first) Reading:

This entire site - but, some real fascinating stuff is found under the ESSAYS & PAPERS link, like the chapter "The Doctor Who Never Was - Milan Brych" written by a lawyer who defended Brych; also, some of the documents of P.J. Scott (the Czechoslovakian Connection) and Prof R. D. Wright (1974 Inquiry)--these have Q/A interviews (cross examinations) where Brych gave his feeble responses (sometimes no responses) to charges against him that were backed with hard evidence...we are convinced, just as all the courts were convinced...Milan Brych was a fraud (this is the only instance on this site where we will state our own opinion). Read and decide for yourself--everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Read the rest of the material on this website, and you might also be surprised to learn that in spite of himself, Brych did relieve suffering in some cancer patients...and they didn't care if he was a "plumber"...they were happy that he gave them remission and/or relief from suffering when orthodox medicine failed...interesting facts, interesting psychology!

What you WILL Find on this Site:

The information contained in this website comes from a variety of sources:  original research by several distinguished medical and legal professionals and journalists; also, various newspaper and other media articles.  Some of the material comes from surviving families of former Brych patients. Where possible, the source of each article and/or photo is provided. There are no "new" documents created or authored by any of the editors of this website, with the exception of this home page and the Public Opinion page, which is mostly material that has been sent in to the web editors from many site visitors.

We present the facts of previously published media, as well as legal and scientific investigations on Dr. Milan Brych.  These investigations and the resulting conclusions are substantiated with very credible sources.  Much of the information has been verified by affidavits from these individuals and through legal and academic institutions.  Where opinion is expressed, it is usually noted in the original source articles, and these opinions are not necessarily those of the website editors of the Milan Brych Underground Website.

Humour.  In spite of the tragic story of much human suffering of emotional and physical pain, caused by Milan Brych, we find it possible to include a few elements of humour.  These are found mainly in the Public Opinion page of this website, and the credits for the satirical comments and cartoons go to our website visitors--we thank them for sending in their material.

What you Will NOT Find on this Site:

Aside from repeating original authors, you will not find any claims or statements of our own, from the website editors or the group of "We" as defined below.  We have not created any "new" material here.  We are not the authors of any text on this site except for this page, the "home" (intro) page.  This has two advantages:

  1. It enables us to provide information without our own bias on the Milan Brych Affair, so that you, the reader, can form your own opinion;  some of the information on this site is, of course, biased since some of the sources are the investigators and prosecutors against Brych;

  2. We are not libel; at most, perhaps the original authors or sources could be held libel for their own material, although Brych has lost these cases in court in the past. We avoid libel, calumny and defamation by ensuring that we do not state anything untruthful about Milan Brych.  The possible exception here is the caricatures and satirical comments sent in from the public, but these are no different than the cartoons that poke fun at politicians that can be found in many of the worlds newspapers--the goal or intent is caricature, not calumny!

Who Are "We"?

"We" are concerned citizens with social conscience who have helped to share and compile the material for this website.  As a group, we come from several countries.

Our collective identity is comprised of individuals of various professions.  "We" are:

  • some surviving family members of former Brych patients

  • medical research scientists with established orthodox medical institutions

  • clinical physicians

  • lawyers

  • computer / IT

Our individual identity remains anonymous for our own protection from reprisal from Milan Brych. Since "we" are not authors of any material on this site, no credit to our name is necessary. Our individual identity is not required to substantiate the material on this site; the credibility comes from the authors and sources that are cited with each document. "We" should also clearly point out that NONE of the NAMES of professors/scientists or doctors that appear on this website (cited with their publications) have anything to do with the group of "We" as defined above.  In fact, some of those authors have yet to discover this website, and perhaps have no knowledge of their material being  published on this website.  We have simply gathered all this material that has been previously  published in university libraries, or the media, and we have assembled it on this website as a single source of information--a single document in web format.

Our Purpose:

Essentially, there are three main objectives of this website:

  1. To provide as much information as possible about the Milan Brych Affair: the 20 year period of history of Milan Brych's activities as a cancer therapist in New Zealand and Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

  2. To use the Milan Brych Affair as an historical example of unorthodox medical practice, and to bring public awareness of the danger of seeking these hopeless treatments, and how an individual such as Milan Brych is capable of manipulating not only individuals but entire institutions and the media for his own gain.

We provide information on some historical events about the controversial cancer therapist, Milan Brych. This website is quite possibly the most complete repository of information on "the Milan Brych Affair."  We have gathered legal, medical, and media documents from institutions throughout the world, to reproduce them here on this website. Although we include some biographical information about Vlastimyl Milan Brych, our focus is on the 20 year period of history (1968 to 1988), when Brych became a media sensation, after he claimed to have found a cure for cancer.   While it is not our specific objective to bash Brych, we recognise that this website does expose his reputation as a fraud, but this is the reputation that Brych has earned himself.  We have not exaggerated any historical information, we only ensure that Milan Brych's history has been preserved on the public record, and made easily accessible by means of an internet website as well as archive copies on CD-ROMs.

By studying and web-publishing the historical events of the Milan Brych Affair, we alert a potentially naive public of the dangers of falling prey to the attraction of quackery medical treatment (these cons still operate today).  [*The following comments in this paragraph are not our own citation but a paraphrase of other documentation found elsewhere on this website.]  But the lesson goes even deeper than this.  A close examination of each manipulative step that was carefully calculated by Brych, reveals a psychopathic* character.  In which ways, you ask?  First of all, how about a complete disregard for human life?  Or, a supercilious character, full of egomania, charged with a superiority complex (this "air" of egomania can be seen in the video interviews).  And as Milan Brych succeeded in each of his exploits, this must have bolstered his confidence to the point of insanity.  A confidence-man he was.  Milan Brych sold this confidence to the desperate and dying.  He exuded a powerful charm, warmth and caring, yet he continued to demand enormous sums of money from hopeless cancer patients who erred from orthodox medical treatment.  How could Brych have maintained a heartless, sinister disguise, while holding on his lap, helpless and trusting patient,  Jarrod John Nutt  who presented with a large tumour on his head.  And what of the case of Brych's own "miracle child", Damien LeMaistre.  Imagine the courage it would take for a normal, non-sociopath person to make such claims for cures and to assume the self-promoting style that Milan Brych achieved.  Brych, a poor and uneducated criminal, entered New Zealand in 1968 as a political refugee.  Through a series of carefully planned manoeuvres, Brych soon held power over the orthodox medical establishment and the media, and became very wealthy by convincing people that he was not only a qualified physician, but that he had discovered a cure for many types of cancer.  For a long time Milan Brych was almost unstoppable. From the Milan Brych Affair we can learn some important lessons of history, hoping that future human suffering might be avoided.

More important than warning the public about Milan Brych himself, the public should be aware of other wolves in sheep's clothing--there are many medical quacks and charlatans trying to make lucrative gains by conning patients when they are most vulnerable.  Of course, some would argue that if orthodox medicine has told you that you are going to die anyway, why not try the questionable alternatives?  To this we reply, it is better to die and leave your money to your family rather than to die and give your money to a heartless crook.  But if only these quacks could produce cure rates even half as good as orthodox medicine, then maybe.  But quacks do not invite scrutiny of their methods or their results.  They set up their con-shops in countries like Mexico or Cook Islands where they are free from legitimate challenge to their methods--but according to their defence, they set up in such countries to be free from bureaucratic red tape that interferes with "real progress" in their research.  A convenient lie!  Quacks build their reputations on charisma, hype, hearsay, and the false hope of desperate patients.  It is pathetic, it is tragic.

We are interested in providing both sides of the Milan Brych Affair.  Although we are interested in "truth-seeking" we do reproduce many articles on this site, some of which might not be completely true or accurate.  We have found only a few discrepancies and errors during much cross-reference with different sources (and made corrections where possible).  If we receive any email from Brych supporters (including from Vlastimil Milan Brych himself) we will post it on this website, in the interest of fair play and completeness.

We are engaged in research at university libraries in several countries around the world, so that we might bring to the Internet a full chronology, exposé and conclusion on the Milan Brych Affair.  This information, currently stored in libraries, periodicals and newspapers around the world, should be web-published and preserved on the Internet, where it can be easily accessible to the public.  This is our endeavour.  If you have any information to contribute, email us at:  inquiry@mbuw.org
