Marton Struggle to Semi-Final but they
made it!
Marton kick-off this quarter final cup tie in very blustery
condition at Redcar Rugby club. The wind made the game a farce with both teams
struggling to produce any flowing football. Athletic took the lead with only 5
mins gone with the wind playing a big part in the goal. A corner from the left
was whipped into the box and the strong wind took the ball high into the net.
Four mins later Marton suffered a carbon copy of the first goal from another
corner with the ball bending into the net with the keeper having very little
chance to save it.
Marton struggled to give any reply in the first half with the wind
being so strong and had to wait till the second half to reduced the arrears
after a scramble in the Athletic penalty area. The ball fell to Hudson who powered
his shot into the roof of the net. Marton's late, late come back produced a
penalty with only one min left of normal time. Robinson stepped up to coolly
send the keeper the wrong way and set up extra time.
Both teams again struggled to cope with the wind in extra time and
played out a stalemate and so the game went into penalties. Marton won the
shoot out 4-3 to put them in the semi-final of the North Riding cup for the
second successive season and their 5th semi-final in 3 seasons.
