Marton go down
fighting in league cup match!!!
Marton’s disastrous start to the year
2002 continued when their reign on the league cup for the last 2 seasons came
to an end.
Marton took advantage of a swirling
wind in the 1st half and went in front with a well taken goal by top
marksman Matty Mcqueeney who broke loose from his marker to coolly slot the
ball under the advancing keeper. Norton struggled to hold the strong advances
from the Marton midfield duo, Shaw and Matthews and with the Norton keeper in
outstanding form Marton struggled to press home their advantage. Marton doubled
their lead on the stroke of half time when Lee Robinson hit a direct free kick
high into the net with the keeper having very little chance to save it.
With only 5 mins gone in the 2nd half Norton reduced
the arrears after a mix-up in the Marton goal. Norton continued to press for
the equaliser but Marton’s defence held firm. Marton looked to be holding on
for the next round with only 8 mins remaining when a shot from the edge of the
box went in off the post to bring the scores level.
Marton where stunned, a poor kick-off was then intercepted by
Norton and a long range shot from the edge of the box was misjudged by Hogarth
in the Marton goal and the ball went agonisingly into the net to end Marton’s
reign on the league cup.
