Marlboro Eagles Football Club Saturday 6th October 2001
Whitchurch Hospital Eagles Remain Undefeated!
Our friends at Whitchurch provided a wonderful venue for us this morning, even providing catering facilities! The club had arranged games for TWO sets of four teams by providing four pitches! And that's not all! Straight after our games all the pitches were in action again for a different age group! Well done Whitchurch and thank you! The morning started with an overcast sky and as the boys warmed up the heavens opened! Fortunately, the heavy shower was short and sharp and by the time the games started the dark clouds had passed over! Things then brightened up considerably and we once again experienced a fine morning of weather to go along with a fine morning's football! A slightly bigger squad this morning meant the managers had a lot of work to do ringing the changes between games. However Mike and Dermot were well up to the task once again!
The round-up of today's results!
Game 1 Marlboro Eagles 4 Pentyrch 1
Game 2 Marlboro Eagles 5 Lisvane 4
Game 3 Marlboro Eagles 1 Whitchurch 1
Today there were some very different football matches compared to last week! The first game saw us play a spirited Pentyrch side who competed throughout. Fortunately our lads were working hard for one another and 4 fine goals saw us home with only one conceded. The second game against another of Lisvane Panther sides saw us swarm into a 4-1 half time lead with the game seemingly over. However Lisvane displayed an impressive comeback in the second half and scored 3 goals to a solitary Eagles effort. It was just as well that fifth goal went in as the 5-4 result tells! Some of our play in the second half was a little lackadaisical to say the least and things didn't bode well for the expected tough encounter with Whitchurch!
However, the lads really pulled themselves together for the next game and took the lead with a wonderful goal early in the first half. It's often stated that teams are at their most vulnerable just after scoring and so it proved! A Whitchurch attacker was allowed to walk through our defence and scored a soft goal as our supporters were still celebrating! It was 1-1 and it looked like we were in for a real game! Sam produced two great saves soon after the goals but as half time came it was still 1-1. The second half saw a fast open game and our defence really needed to be on form. Fortunately, they were up to the task and Whitchurch found a clear shot hard to come by. It was a similar story at the other end with Aaron, Niall and James all having to battle hard. One desperate challenge by Declan in front of goal denied a Whitchurch attacker a clear shot close to the end. This challenge was legal unlike an earlier rather unsubtle challenge of his out on our right!
A draw was a fair result: honours were even and what a game it had been! Well done the Eagles and well done Whitchurch for a fine game of football!
Special mention today goes to Ewan whose tireless work all over the field is an inspiration to all! Well done Ewan! Keep it up!
