Marlboro Eagles Football Club
Saturday 27th April 2002
Court Field, Llanishen
WWWham! Who Said 13's Unlucky?
Our first visit to Court Field, home of Lisvane Panthers! If only I had a £1 every time I heard someone say "I didn't know this was here!" A nice cosy set-up but a bit of a slope! If it had been any steeper we would have issued pitons and ropes! No James, no Leo and of course no Aaron today, but still a strong squad for today's fixtures! The nice bright weather with a bit of cold breeze gave us perfect conditions so we all looked forward to a cracking finish to the season!

WWWhat a WWWay to Finish!
Game 1 was against Lisvane Panthers B and we had the slope in the first half! This was a significant advantage and the lads took control fairly soon after the start. Three excellent goals were scored but we wondered whether it was going to be enough! The second half started with the expected assault on the Eagles Base Camp but our defence withstood the early attacks superbly and our lads then started to raid uphill! It is a measure of the lads determination that even against the slope they took control once more and actually scored three more goals in the second half! All credit to Lisvane as they played their part in a competitive match and no-one would claim they deserved to lose 6-0.
Game 2 against Lisvane A took place on the larger field which was at right angles to the first pitch so the slope was from side to side instead of up and down. This was a very competitive affair and the lads were glad to have taken a one goal lead before half time with a well struck effort from Niall. The second half continued to be contested with enthusiasm by both sides and our defence had their work cut out on many occasions. However, even though on one occasion the ball rebounded into Jonathan's arms from a post the defence held! Despite some close efforts on goal after some fine midfield work by the hard working Ewan the Eagles also failed to score in the second half and the game ended 1-0 in favour of our heroes.
Game 3 was against our Marlboro Sports 'C' colleagues and it proved very fraught in the first half. Marlboro C hit a post on one attack with the ball again rebounding to Jon in goal. Our attack failed to breach the "C" defence although we did go very close with the ball once bouncing on the line before being cleared. At half time it was still 0-0 and the planned goalkeeper change to give Jon a run out was abandoned due to the tied score. However, things were to change dramatically. With the advantage of the slope the lads took complete control and the much waited for first goal soon materialised! That was all the lads needed to break free and it was soon all over as goal after goal went in for the Eagles! At five nil Declan took over from Jon (the planned half time change see photo 16) and Jon duly ran up field to score to make it 6-0!
So that's it! What a way to finish! 13 goals and none conceded! Hopefully, there will be a few more Saturday mornings arranged unofficially but we'll have to inform the lads on a week by week basis!
