SUMMER 2000 NEWSLETTER

Another Excellent Annual General Meeting!

On Wednesday 14 June, the Annual General Meeting of the Association was held in Clober Primary School. This well attended event dealt with Association business as well as hosting a question and answer session with Des McNulty [our MSP], Eric Gotts [our East Dunbartonshire Councillor], Douglas Mathie [one of Milngavie’s Community Police Officers] and Jim Jeffreys [from East Dunbartonshire’s Addiction Counselling service].

Presentations by the Roads & Traffic and Estates sub-committees showed that strong feelings still remain on matters related with traffic flow and speed as well as with environmental matters around the estate. This showed that there is still plenty of work for the new committee to undertake with appropriate bodies. One feature of the presentations was the announcement of a public transport service within the estate – details of this are shown overleaf.

The Financial report indicated that there was little expenditure involved over the past year and that only a small number of dues had been collected. The Committee had decided that no dues were to be collected until such time that events dictate funds to be required – any dues paid in 1999 can be returned on request to the Treasurer.

A new Committee was elected at the AGM as follows:-

  • Chair Alan McMinn [956 2814]
  • Vice-Chair Ian Ferguson [956 4814]
  • Treasurer Frank Bowles [956 6834]
  • Secretary Doris Sofio [956 4967]
  • Members Gail Ross; Veer Math, John Graham; Frances Fagg; Eric Gotts; Paul Kennedy; Catherine Campbell

The new Committee look forward to continuing the review of matters that require attention as identified at the meeting. If you have any matters that you wish to raise with the Committee then please make appropriate contact.

Estate Equipment

The Residents’ Association has always held a few items of household equipment for members to borrow for their own personal use. In light of the timing since issue of the last general Newsletter, please note the location of the following equipment that can be used by residents:These are currently held by the following people:

  • Outdoor Ladders: Margot Marson 956 6795 and Frances Livingston 956 5219
  • Wheelbarrow: Ross Burton, 563 8153
  • Mains Water Keys: Ross Burton 563 8153
  • Drain Rods: Alan McKinnon 956 4934

You should of course inspect any equipment before you use it as this will be at your own risk. Please return equipment quickly so that other people are not kept waiting.

New Mains Estate Bus Service

As part of the notice advertising last year's AGM, results of the questionnaire were circulated in early June 1999. Regarding the issue of public transport the results were:-

Q2 75% of respondents would like to see improved public transport to the estate

Q3 65% of respondents [or their families] would use a bus service if it were diverted to the estate.

The Committee considered that a reliable regular service linking the estate with Milngavie Centre and the railway station would be of much benefit to residents. Such a service could assist in reducing the car volume from the estate as well as in assisting to alleviate the parking problem at the railway station. It would also provide suitable transport for those without access to a car throughout the day.

On that basis the Committee communicated with Strathclyde Passenger Transport Authority requesting that they take these aspects into consideration during discussions with commercial and subsidised operators.
Following several months of pessimistic response, the Committee recently received correspondence intimating that First Glasgow was "actively considering" the operation of a bus service in the estate. On making direct enquiry to First Glasgow it was confirmed that the company had decided to change both routing and timetabling for their commercial 109 and 119 services and that these changes would be effective as of Sunday 16 July 2000.

Basically there is to be a half-hourly service through the estate with a slightly enhanced frequency at peak periods. Through the day every second Glasgow bus will terminate and commence at the Craigton Road terminus and therefore will not serve Hunter Road or beyond. On an hourly basis the 119 service will connect the estate with Clydebank and thus provide a welcome link with Clydebank Shopping Centre.

In general terms this commercial decision by First Glasgow, made without consultation with estate representatives, is seen as being a positive change that will provide alternative options for residents. Links will remain with Milngavie Centre, Hillfoot railway station and Glasgow City Centre as indicated in the following route as provided by First Glasgow - this will also appear on the timetables that should be available at least one week before the changes take place.
