ASSOCIATION RESURRECTED!

After looking close to winding up, Douglas Mains Residents Association has been reformed with a new caretaker commitee.Last June a special general meeting was held at Clober Primary School. After considerable discussion it was decided to keep the local association going rather than wind it up. A small number of people volunteered their services on the new committee of management. The new committee was given the responsibility of creating a new framework for the association so that it could cope with the changing needs of a large residential estate. An AGM is to be held in the spring to ratify any constitutional changes and approve officebearers. Membership is of course open to all residents of the Mains Estate.

Craigton Woods Threat

An important habitat for local wildlife is threatened by a plan to develop housing on Craigton Woods. Developers have expresed an interest in purchasing this woodland for a housing development. Your committee believes that any future planning application should be refused because of the greenbelt status of the land and the threat both to wildlife and a popular right of way.

Public Transport News

Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) is considering extending the hourly number 49 "minibus" service through the estate. The 49 service connects the outer-lying areas of Milngavie and Bearsden with their respective railway stations before running forward to Anniesland, the West End, Glasgow University and the City Centre. Your committee has asked the SPT to await the results of our questionnaire before proceeding with any definite proposal.

Meanwhile, First Bus Glasgow’s direct 119 service to the City Centre via Maryhill Road has been improved for Mains Estate residents with all buses running to and from Hunter Road, at as frequent as 15 minute intervals during the day. The 119 service also connects with the railway at Hillfoot. As a service, local bus and train timetables will be available shortly on this website -- watch this space!.

We Meet Hacking & Paterson

Your committee were pleased to welcome a representative of the Estate’s factors, Hacking & Paterson, to a meeting recently. Residents in the factored areas of the estate will be pleased to know that the ground maintenance contract will be put out to tender for the first time. Although the feedback from the factor’s newsletter gave some support to the infilling of the water feature there are overwhelming legal obstacles preventing this from happening. Ways are still be investigated to control the water loss and keep running costs down
