Who is Trunks?
There are actually two versions of Trunks.
-
the one who came from the future: Mirai-Trunks
-
and the one who lives in the present: Chibi-Trunks
(who
sadly became GT-Trunks
after he smoked crack one day and signed for the TV show ;p ).
The one that will mostly be developped here is the one of the LEFT
on the picture: his full name is Mirai
No Chu-Senshi Torankusu.
Err.. To make short we'll say Mirai-Trunks
or
Future
Trunks, Okie ? ^__^;
Trunks is a very interesting character from the Dragon Ball Z show.
He first appears as a young adult at the end of Freeza's saga and blows
the guy away in a blink of an eye while Goku needed endless and boring
episods to do so. But it's not because of *that* that he is interesting.
His whole story can be put totally aside of the usual DBZ plot.
Trunks has been born from Vegeta and Bulma. This couple may be
surprising at first sight, but hey!
He heritated the characteritics of both his parents: a saiya-jin
strength and the beauty and intelligence of his mother. (the
perfect man!
)
A few months after his birth, Goku developed a deadly heart desease,
the WILLS. It is a desease
he contracted previously on the Yadratt planet. He died shortly
after that.
Two years passed, and two cyborgs very powerful appeard. They were programed
to terminate Goku, but as he was already dead, they went on a big planetary
genocide. During that war, most of the Dragon Crew, Piccolo, Krilin, Vegeta,
Yanucha and Ten-shin Han were killed by the machines. (yes, it sounds like
Terminator).
Bulma and Trunks managed more or less to survive for several years.
Without a father to look upon, Trunks was growing old as a normal human
with very few knowledge of his fight capacity. But as his mother was always
talking to him about the past and how his father and the others were fighting
to defend the Earth, Trunks wanted to learn how to fight in order to destroy
the cyborgs that were making of his world a doom.
Bulma, since the death of all her friends, decided to create a chronoporting,
a machine that could travel in the past, in order to change the story-line.
| At the age of 13, Trunks asks Goku's son, Gohan, to train him. After
a year of training, and despite all Gohan's efforts, Trunks cannot reach
yet the Super-Saiya-jin (SSJ) level, even if his fighting-skills improved
greatly; it's like he needs some shock to switch to the SSJ mode. His Saiya-jin
heritage can be clearly seen through his way of fighting, but neither him
nor Gohan are a match for the cyborgs.
One day, Gohan brings Trunks with him into a fight against the cyborgs
so that Trunks can observe and learn their fighting techniques. Unfortunately,
one of the cyborgs attacks Trunks, and to defend his young student, Gohan
interferes and looses an arm before the two saiya-jins hides in the underground
to escape the cyborgs. |
 |
A few week passes, and another attack of the cyborgs happens. This time,
Gohan knocks down Trunks to keep him safe. Trunks is the only hope for
the Earth, but he's not ready to fight the cyborgs yet (hmm... a little
bit Star Wars and Mortal
Kombat here... ;p ). Gohan faces the cyborgs alone and dies.
When Trunks wakes up and searches after his mentor, he finds his body
laying in the mud of the ruins of the city that was just attacked. The
shock makes him loose control and he turns SSJ for the first time. This
was in fact the shock he needed.
Three years of conflicts passes. The chronoporting is almost ready,
but Trunks hears about a new massacre provoked by the cyborgs not very
far from him. His mother tries to make him stay at their hiding place.
If he dies now, there is no hope. Trunks, feeling confident in his own
strength, prefers trying to rescue the people in the present and flies
right into the place where the cyborgs are. Twenty minutes later, the cyborgs
leaves him for dead. He's brought back to the hospital where he stays in
the coma for 5 days.
When he wakes up, he realizes that he will probably never be able to
defeat the cyborgs in the traditional way, and accept to go into the past
to change the events that lead to that war. That decision will change his
life forever.
His mother gives him the medecine that will cure Goku's desease. She
believes that if Goku is still alive when the war will start, he'll be
able to defeat the cyborgs. Trunks, as for him, has another purpose by
going into the past: He wants to meet the father he never knew.
And this is how we first see him in the TV show: he appears as a young
adult, turns Freeza into barbecue-meat and annouces to a mesmerized Dragon
Team the arrival of Goku three hours later. He'll reveal to Goku the events
of the future and gives him the medecine that will perhaps change the course
of events. He then teleports himself three years in the future to be there
when the war begins.
Unfortunately, his own actions in the past won't change his future.
He just created a new storyline where the changes can be seen, while the
storyline where he comes from remains unchanged.
His presence in the past also provokes the arrival of an organic cyborg
(a bioroid named Cell), who was stuck into the future and had killed Trunks
to steal his chronoporting and come back in the past.
For Cell, this already happened, but not for Trunks. In fact, Cell killed
Trunks because he needed to merge with the cyborgs 17 and 18 to turn into
his perfect form, and... in the future... Trunks had killed the cyborgs!
Trunks knows then that one day he'll go back to the future and will
destroy the cyborgs, but that a bioroid will then kill him and steal his
chronoporting to come back in the past.
The presence of Cell in the past, anyway, pushes Trunks, Goku, Vegeta
and the others, to train harder than what the would have done if
Cell hadn't appeared. So, Trunks is confident: when he'll meet Cell in
the future, *he* will kill the bioroid, and not the contrary.
But Cell has other plans: he wants to become perfect (and manages to
do so by absorbing the cyborgs), but also, wants to prevent Trunks from
returning in the future to destroy the cyborgs. He learned from Trunks
that each time someone travels in the time, a new future is created.
Therefore, Cell thinks that if he kills Trunks before he returns in
the future, the (no perfect) bioroid he is in that future will be able
to absorb the cyborgs and won't have to go in the past to do so...
(okay? everybody still follows?
)
Cell organizes a tournament during which he manages to kill Trunks before
being killed by Gohan. Trunks is nevertheless resurrected and returns in
his future. There he destroys easily first the cyborgs, then Cell, three
years later.
The war is finally over.
Trunks' relations with his
father.
As mentionned earlier, Trunks' main purpose by coming into the past
was to meet the father he never knew. Unfortunately for him, his father
is Vegeta, prince of the Saiya-jins, who considers that "showing feelings"
is a proof of weakness.
Before he discovers that Trunks is his son from the future, Vegeta considers
him as a rival because Trunks could reach SSJ level before him (and "he's
supposed to be the strongest warrior in the universe!")
When Vegeta discovers the truth about Trunks, he is in a way proud that
his son is so strong, but will never show it. On the other hand, he hates
the fact that his son is not a bad-ass like him, and doesn't like the fight
like him. Trunks is more carefull. He'll not go "straight forward" into
a fight if he feels that his opponent is too strong for him.
As he's been raised by his mother who was always praising Goku, Trunks
always advices to "wait for Goku before going into the fight". This enrages
Vegeta as Goku is his long-time rival.
Therefore, Vegeta spends his time either ignoring Trunks, or beating
him up.
A first improvement in their relation will happen when they'll be forced
to enter the Room Of Spirit And Time (ROSAT) together for a year to train
themselves in order to become stronger.
Whatever happened in there, we have very few information. Some flash-backs
will show that the relation between the father and the son was the same
as before, but when they came out of the R.O.S.A.T., it was clear they
were sharing a secret.
During the fight that followed against Cell (level 2), Vegeta mentionned
to the bioroid that Trunks was almost his equal; something he'd never have
done before. It was clear there than Vegeta was proud of his son, but that
it was still very hard to make him admit that.
In fact, Trunks was stronger than his father, but knowing how his father
was proud, he never dared showing it.
When his father faced Cell - level3 (perfect Cell). Trunks waited for
his father to loose consciousness before revealing his true strength, even
if it was not enough to beat Cell.
When Trunks declares forfeit against Cell, Vegeta (a dozen of miles
away) feels that the Ki-level of his son dropped and turns mad against
Cell, swearing he'll kill him (Cell, not Trunks!). When he and Krilin arrives
where Cell and Trunks had fought, they discover that Trunks is alive. Vegeta
acts as if he didn't care but never stops to observes his son while this
one explains about the tournament Cell wants to organize.
This announces the second big improvement in the relation between Vegeta
and Trunks.
During the tournament, Cell attacks Trunks off-guards and kills him.
When Vegeta realizes that his son is dead, he turns beserk and attacks
Cell senselessly. He looses, but prooved he loved his son... in his way...
The third big improvement in their relation happens when Trunks is resurrected
and is ready to leave the Team to go back to the future. Vegeta goodbyes
him with a hand sign. People would perhaps find this very few, but from
someone like Vegeta, risking to be seen by others while manifesting an
emotion other than rage or disdain towards someone is really surprising.
Trunks knows then that he has prooved to be worthy of his father. :)
Following the events of the movie "Bojack",
we know that Trunks came back from the future during the three years that
occured betwen his destruction of the cyborgs and his final fight against
Cell. There he participated a tournament where he, Gohan and Krilin had
to face warriors from outer space. This is where - if people still had
any doubts - it is clear that Vegeta cares about Trunks.
Vegeta first refused to participate the tournament, saying the opponents
were not worthy, but when Trunks, Gohan and Krilin are sent into the "matrix"
(;p), Trunks faces and beats his opponent before being beaten up by the
big boss (Bojack). Vegeta feels his son's ki disappearing. He goes directly
into the battle, but it takes him some time to reach the battlezone.
During that time, Trunks recovered, participated to new fights, got
tied in a virtual net and almost impaled with an ice pike. Vegeta interfers
in time and saves his son's life before telling him to go in a safer place.
So, if THAT is not a PROOF of
his love for his son...!
