Industrial Visit
Intermediate GNVQ ICT
The
first visit for the 2001-2002 cohort of students was to see the production line of Peugeot
at Coventry. The visit gave the student a firsthand experience
of a large manufacturing organisation. It supported units 1, 2 and 5
Students were expected to identify how information is presented, data
handling, organisation structures, data flows in an organisation and the use of
ICT in businesses.
Be observant and enjoy your visit.

TO STUDENTS
You are
now entering adult education. This differs from school in
that you are expected to take responsibility for your learning.
You will be taught and guided throughout the course but you will
be expected to seek out information for your self. A lot
of research is required on your part not just the notes you have
taken in your lessons or the handouts that you have been given.
A good study folder needs to be maintained at all times.
It is important that you ensure that you understand a topic by
asking your tutor questions during delivery in class. Your
studies will take the form of:
- input from tutors
- workshop practice by you
- assessment of your
understanding in the form of assignments
It is very similar to learning
to drive, - the driving instructor gives you the basic knowledge which you
practice in driving lessons and then take your driving test to demonstrate the
skill and knowledge that you have learnt. Using this analogy you would
need to be punctual and attend all of your driving lessons as you wouldn't
expect to pass your driving test without a lot of practice. In your
studies this relates to your workshop activities which you need to work hard at
to prepare you for an assignment. You may also be producing pre-release
material to take into external assessments.
Information will be placed on this web site and students will be expected
to refer to it regularly to pick up assignment, tutorials and as a general
communication link with their tutors. It will also provide revision
material for students retaking units.
Whilst you are studying
Information technology and computing you will be expected to become
familiar with communication techniques and use them on a regular
basis. Your tutors may contact you by web page, e-mail or
files on the joint drives on the college network.
You will be allocated
a password and a work area of your own on the college network server in
which you must make a directory structure in which to save ALL of
your work. Work files of completed assignments must not be deleted
until the end of the course as reference to them may be required at any
time. Students are required to show competence at file management
and security, with regular backup copies retained on floppy disks at ALL
times.
The security
of your work area, disks and files are your responsibility and breaches
of security or loss of work is treated very seriously. See Computer
User Guide and Policy and GNVQ
course code of conduct which you need to give a signed copy to
your LMT tutor.
You must keep
your password a secret. Disclosing it to another student, allowing
another student to access your work area, leaving your work station in
a logged on weakens the security of the college network and all are considered
serious offences
In class
rooms students must not access chat lines, non course related
web sites, e-mails (other
than to check for e-mails from the course tutors).
Mobile
phones and walkman are similarly not allowed as they distract
both you and others as well as disrupt lessons. Your computer
is a valuable resource used by other courses and any alterations
to standard college settings is forbidden. You are not
allowed to alter a computer or install/download programs. Only CD-ROMS -
floppy disks authorised by your tutor can be run on a machine. You must
keep copies of all of your work in your student area as well as backed up on
disks. All work must be retained until the end of the course, your tutors
can ask you to reprint it at any time during the course. Students
must bring all work to all sessions. Master copies must be kept on the
college network server to ensure that you can carry out workshop activities .
