ELCOME to the unofficial RENFREW GOLF CLUB web site.
On Saturday 29 September 1973 at 2.30 p.m. the new Blythswood Course was officially opened by the late James T Douglas, President of the Scottish Golf Union.
The programme of ceremony commenced with the introduction of James Douglas by Captain Andrew Stuart.
Mr Douglas congratulated the Club on its achievement and wished all those fortunate enough to be members many happy years in the new location.
A presentation was then made to Mr Douglas and Captain Stuart replied on behalf of the officials and members of the club.
Since 1973 the stature of the Club and the course has steadily grown. Renfrew is now regarded as one of the finest and most challenging golf courses in the West of Scotland.
Among the many major tournaments to have been staged at Renfrew are the following:
- The Prudential Pro-Am:
- The Saints and Sinners Celebrity:
- The Telly Savalas Show Pro-Am:
- The Uniroyal Professional Championship:
- The Scottish Boys' Stroke Play:
- The Scottish Amateur Championship:
- The European Boys Team Championship:
- The West of Scotland Amateur Open:
- The Sunderland of Scottish Masters.
As highlighted above, the Scottish Amateur Championship was played at Renfrew in 1984. It was the first to be sponsored by near neighbours J & B Rare Scotch Whisky attracting more than the full entry of 256.
According to the 1985 Scottish Golf Union Year Book, "The course proved to be a fine test of golf and some excellent play was seen during the week."
