"The Visit"
Twas the middle of the night,
When she suddenly awoke,
Not knowing what had stirred her,
Until she heard the voice that spoke.
"Who are you?" she cried in fear,
Pulling the duvet up to her chin,
"What is it that you want from me?"
"And how did you get in?".
"I need no invitation from you"
Replied the eerie voice,
"I come and go as I please
And in this you have no choice".
"Who I am, you will learn,
And I intend to make you see
That what I want from you tonight,
Will help to set you free".
She sobbed into her pillow,
So scared of what she heard,
Her covered ears forced to listen,
To each and every word.
The voice now growing harder,
Began to speak about her life,
Her neglect as a mother,
Her disloyalty as a wife.
It made her look at pictures,
Hear the nasty lies she'd told,
She saw her own true colours,
As her life it did unfold.
The people she had hurt,
Now stood beside her bed
And she felt much shame and sorrow
As they repeated words she'd said.
"Please no more" she begged,
"I can now see where I failed
I know why you are here tonight,
Forgive me please" she wailed.
"Forgiveness is always yours"
It answered "You only had to ask,
But can you change your ways?
Tis a far more difficult task"
"Yes" she replied as tears fell,
"I deeply regret all my past sins,
But how can I go back in life
To right the wrongful things?".
"This you cannot do"
Said the voice more gently now,
"But with your suffering and guilt,
You will pay the price somehow".
"It is those who never repent
That must owe the biggest debt,
That which is due on judgement day
At the dark hour of their death".
"She nodded as she thanked the voice,
I am so glad you came to me,
That you opened up my eyes,
To help me really see".
"I beg of you one favour though
before you leave this place,
Please tell me who you are,
And let me see your face".
The voice laughed very gently
And said "all you have to do,
Is look into your mirror,
I am your concience.....I am you".
