The Leicestershire and Rutland People Index
A web-site for family and local historians

Are you a family historian? If so then this index is for you.

The Leicestershire and Rutland People Indexes contain references to people that appear in different classes of archival material that are stored in the National Archives of Great Britain and the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland, England. The Leicestershire family historian Mark Gamble has compiled the indexes. There are three indexes on this web-site. The first index is dedicated to the men of Leicestershire and Rutland who served in the British Army. The second index details the names of those men, women and children who were convicted in Leicestershire and Rutland and were transported as convicts between 1787-1867. The third index is a listing of all those paupers, individuals and families, who were subjected to a removal order made by Leicestershire magistrates between 1730-1820. Look out for other interesting information that will appear on the web-site in the future.

Are you a family historian?

Was your ancestor a Tiger, an Old Stubborn, one of the Orange Lilies, the Young Buffs, or maybe he was a Springer?

These are some of the many sobriquets given to soldiers who have served in different regiments of the British Army. The English counties of Leicestershire and Rutland have provided men to many different regiments of the army, over many generations. It often comes as a great surprise to the family historian to find that a forbear may have seen the wilds of India’s Northwest Frontier, the Forests of Canada, the brightly-lit skies of Australia, or suffered the cold and hardships of the Crimea. This index contains the names of some of those who left their midland homes to fight in far off wars and garrison parts of the British Empire.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Soldiers Index has been compiled from various sources that are held in the National Archives (formerly the Public Record Office) and the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland. The index provides enough information to identify an ancestor who enlisted for military service. The index provides details of the soldiers surname and Christian name, occupation, place of birth, their age at the time of enlistment and the date of their enlistment. Occasionally no date is given in the index. This is because no date of attestation has been discovered. However, the full index entry may provide a detail such as a date of death, which might be used to identify an individual.

A researcher will be able to identify the regiment, or corps, in which an individual served by applying for information on each individual soldier. The full information held on each individual may include service details, details of next-of-kin, medals received, service in other military units, and date and place of death, as well as an archive reference number. These details should allow a researcher to access other records held in archives that can be used to build a vivid picture of an ancestor’s military life.

The records indexed range in date from the late 1700’s to the early 1900’s. Additional information will be added to the index in the future - so please revisit the web-site to see if new information is available
