Mark Messier solid in Penguins debut and helps the pens past Toronto 7-2.

Pittsburgh PA - Mark Messier has been traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins along with the Penguins own 1st round pick they lost when they signed restricted free agent Yari Kurri in the off season. Headed to Stl is super prospect Joe Sakic Johan Garpenlov, a Pitts 3rd and a pits 4th both in the upcoming entry draft. *It was surprising to say the least said a smiling Messier. It's exciting to be playing for a contending team again, don't get me wrong I loved playing for STL and had a really good relation ship with Eric Caron they were all so great to me, but It's my nature I'm a competitive person and I live for those big games. I spoke to Coach Cherry late last night when the trade was finalised and we talked about me moving back over to the left side and how I feel about that kind of move. I simply said I will play anywhere ya want me coach just let me play. It's going to be exciting to play on a line with Kurri again and having a guy like Bryan feeding you the puck makes things all the more sweet*. So the Pittsburgh penguins will take on the New York Rangers tomorrow night and Messier is expected to make his Pittsburgh debut. We had a chance to catch up with Joseph Mackenzie to give us his take on the deal. *Trading Sakic was not really something I was sold on doing. The kid is going to be a great talent in this league very soon, but when I received a call from STL GM Eric Caron and he offered up Messier well to say the least that perked my interest. Mark is just one of those clutch players who you want on the ice come crunch time. He scores big goals and brings that edge that all great leaders have. Mark will be a more then welcome addition to this team and I think I speak for everyone when I say welcome to Pittsburgh Mark Messier, welcome to Pittsburgh*. GM Mackenzie seems stoked with the addition of star centre/winger Mark Messier and I personally think Messier will bring a element to this team it has been missing since Mike Bossy retired and I think many will agree that having a Mark Messier on this already talented Pittsburgh squad makes them extremely scary. Thanks for tuning into this special sports update my name is Shannon Moon and you have been listening to Pittsburgh sports radio.

    Pittsburg draft picks.

Stephane Quintal - A good skater with above average speed. Is also a solid defender who plays within his limitations well. He possesses a solid physical game and will stand-up for himself and his team mates.
Jeff Hackett -  Hackett is a goalie who has a tonne of potential. He possesses great reflexes and plays his angles well. Though consistency has been a bit of a problem in his game, many feel it is just a matter of conditioning, and a strict conditioning programme and a full time goalie coach will send him down the right path.
Yves Racine - A great combination of offensive ability and defensive ability's. a silky smooth skater who is able to read the play well, and is constantly praised for his intelligent play and his ability to recover on defence because of his good positional play.

Joe Sakic selected 1st over all by Pittsburgh in the 1987 RFNHL entry draft.
