The Little Family  in London's East End

The origins of the Little family are elusive. My cousin, Sheila Whatmore has spent many long hours over a long period searching for information about them and in recent times I've been looking to see what I could find out.

It seems that our branch of the Little's originated in Scotland.  William Little married Elisabeth Scott, the daughter of Thomas Scott in London and they subsequently had six children. I discovered that one of the children, Samuel Eyles Pierce Little was likely to have been named after  the Calvinist preacher Samuel Eyles Pierce.   Pierce began his ministry as a preacher in Lady Huntington's Connexion (Selina Hastings, Lady Huntingdon was a Methodist), becoming pastor at Truro in 1783 and subsequently a popular London preacher who published theological works. As the Little's 3 younger children's births were all registered at Dr William's Library, it appears likely that the parents underwent a religious conversion between the births of those children and their elder siblings.

Post office directories have yielded some information about the places the Littles lived  and their occupations. In searching the 1846 Post Office Directory for London, I found the following entries:

William Little, Cooper of 2 Little Cross Street, Newington Butts
Edward Cullen Little, Cooper of 14 Camberwell High Street and 4, Wilds's Rents, Long Lane, Bermondsey
I also found an entry for Thomas Little, Potato Salesman of Cottons Wharf, Tooley Street and 22 Great George Street, Bermondsey. It seems likely that this is William's brother Thomas but I am yet to confirm this.

William Little's will contains many of the family names including in-laws and grandchildren. William specifically mentions the following members of the family:

Jane Mary Davis (deceased) - William's daughter
David Davis, Cooper of  Woolwich in the County of Kent  - son in law and husband of the above
Eliza Davis - daughter of the above

Edward Cullen Little, Cooper of Camberwell Green in the County of Surrey - William's son

William Little, Cooper of Newington in the County of Surrey - William's son

Matthew Henry Little of Clapham in the County of Surrey - Staymaker - William's son

Jane Mary Cash (deceased) - William's daughter
James Cash of 19 Shoreditch in the County of Middlesex - Stay Manufacturer
James Cash - son of the above
Mary Ann Cash - daughter of the above

George Little of Camberwell in the County of Surrey - William's son

Elizabeth Mayhew deceased - William's daughter
George Mayhew of Camberwell Green - husband of the above
Elizabeth Mayhew -daughter of the above
George Mayhew
son of the above
Winifred Mayhew
- daughter of the above
William Mayhew
-  son of the above
